The school she referred to came into being at the turn of the century. Nlorrill hall was completed in time for Oklahoma to welcome state- hood in l9ll7. Its spacious beauty made all residents of the new state proud. Now the frontier was be- coming as the rest of America. Presidents came and went. The youth of Oklahoma and the nation changed from freshmen to graduates with constant regularity, then as- sumed places of leadership and re- sponsibility in the world. The military department, once in- tended to overcome indolence, pro- vided outstanding leaders in four major wars. The college athletic program, started amid a barrage of orations and essays pointing out the brutality of sports, amassed an all- sports record over a broad field bet- tered by only two other schools of the land. All departments of the college produced men and women of competence, prepared to be useful in accordance with their respective abilities. Some achieved greatness, few failed to be better than average.
