Few legislators realized at the time that federal funds would eome to the agricultural eollege immedi- ately, while institutions supported entirely from 'lierritorial funds would have to wait years for growth. 'llhe 'lierritory was too small, and too undeveloped, to be of any real as- sistanee to its institution at that time. lt was a time for decision, and ae- tion. The people of Stillwater, who had little money to spare, bonded themselves for 510,000 they did not have to help finance the eonstruetion of a eollege building at some future date. The Congregational church was the first place of meeting, and most all students, transferred from public schools, studied the same courses they were taking before transfer. it All the classes had to recite in one room, and even these accommoda- tions Were often changed. Moving from place to place it was impossible to care for equipment, and inexpedi- ent to provide for it in any quantity.
