But the herd traveled to Kansas City and were soundly defeated by Rockhurst College, 94-78. OBU then proceeded to drop four league contests in a row: three to Southwestern, Northwestern and Northeastern for dead last in the conference tournament. However, the Bison went 5-2 in the league play, but suffered a 5-6 mark during the second half of the season to drop out of championship and playoff consideration. Despite this, OBU's record against league champion Southwestern and runner-ups Central State and Northeastern was 5-l, the lone loss to the Bronchos at Shawnee, 83-66. Henry Martin, Cleveland, Ohio, junior guard, led team scoring and was eighth in the conference with a 17.3 average. Martin netted 484 points to tie for eighth on OBU's All-time season scoring list. Martin led free throw shooting with llO of l47 for 74.8 per cent, while Stillwater junior forward Dan Garringer notched ll5 of 227 field goals for 5l.9 per cent. Lee Brigham, who guided the Bison cross country team to the conference title in the fall, started his first spring as track coach .on a successful note. Willie Rios paced the Bison at the league meet with triple wins in the 880 il:5B.0J, mile l4:29.3l and two-mile ilO:23.8l. The Lawton junior's best mile effort during the season was a 4:ll timing in the distance medley relay event at the Oklahoma Christian College Relays. Rios was undefeated in all six i-gh 1 Z mile events he ran in during the season. He also won the two-mile run at the Steven F. Austin Relays in 9:32. John Gratton, Winnepeg, Canada freshman, placed second in the two-mile at the conference meet in 'l0:23.8 as did Tom Webb, Cheyenne freshman, with a leap of 22-feet-7M-inches in the long lump. Gratton also clocked l5:l3.9 in the three-mile at the Pittsburg, Kansas Relays, while Webb triple jumped 41 feet, 7 inches in a triangular meet at Edmond. Jerry Ellis, Comanche, Texas freshman, recorded his best mark at the conference meet in the 440 intermediate hurdles with 57.5. Joe Potter, Durant sophomore, came with two-and-half inches of breaking the school record as he vaulted I3 feet, 6 inches in a quadrangular meet at Shawnee. Paying competition such as top independent Oklahoma City University, Missouri Valley Conference power Tulsa University and Big Eight Conference kingpin Oklahoma State University, OBU earned' a 6-ll season mark. ln Eastern Division Collegiate Conference play, the Bison were 4-2 behind league champ Southeastern. Jack Lowe, freshman from Shawnee, led OBU with a 9-10 record in No. l singles play including victories over top men Bill Rhoers of Nebraska and Allen Frost of Tulsa. Jim Adams, Bartlesville sophomore, was OBU's only returning full-time starter in the No. 2 position. ln addition, Paul Purifoy, Oklahoma City freshman, saw considerable action during the season. Only one Bison could make it to the quarter- finals of the conference tournament. Carl Melin, Shawnee junior, got as far as the third round, but Adams lost in the first round and Lowe and Terry Brown, Shawnee senior, in the second round. Both doubles teams of Lowe and Adams plus Brown and Melin were ousted in the second round. Other team members were seniors Don Skinner of Bartlesville and Dean Finch of Ft. However, it was a freshman from Oklahoma City, Don Brigham, who led OBU in the No, l position as he posted o 9-6-l mark in individual play. Brigham was sixth for individual honors at the Collegiate Conference meet and tenth in the college division at the Oklahoma Intercollegiate Invitational Golf Tournament. The Bison, as o team, posted their best finish at the conference meet where they placed seventh with a 670 stroke total. Only l2 strokes separated the fifth, sixth, and seventh places. Raymond Red Miller, OBU's basketball coach, was in his first season as Bison golf coach.
