Captain Frank M. Suzan graduated from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy with a Bachelor of Science Degree and intered the U.S. Merchant Marine with a Third Mates License. Entering the navy in 1955 he served aboard USS TRIPOLI QCVE-645 and USS KIOWA QATF-725 prior to entering flight training. He was designated a Naval Aviator in 1958. After three tours with HELANTI- SUBRON,s, a tour at the U.S. Naval War College and a tour on he staff of Commander Carrier Division Fourteen, Captain Suzan became Ops Officer on the staff Comander Carrier Anti-Submarine Group'Fifty Nine. In January 1969 he reported to HELANTI- SUBRON TEN as XO. He next served as CO of HELANTISUBRON EIGHT before reporting to the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations. Following this tour Captain Suzan became CO of HELANTISUBRON ONE, served as Deputy Wing Commander of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Wing One and finally assumed command of USS VANCOUVER QLPD-25 in 1974. On 12 June 1976 Captain Suzan became Commanding Officer of USS OKINAWA QLPH-35. Commanding Officer 4 3 5, 441 H. . Those years spand one of the most controversial, turbulent and momentous decades in the history of the Unites States and OKINAWA was very much a part. of the events that made that history. Her keel laid in 1960 and commissioned in 1962, OKINAWA spent her first few years on the East Coast. She moved to the West Coast in 1967 and deployed on her first, WestPac in April of that year. Southeast Asia became a familiar sight to OKINAWA sailors over the next eight years. During those years OKINAWA amassed an impressive record of on-the-line operating. Between 1967 and 1975 OKINAWA participated in nineteen amphibious operations in Southeast Asia, a number equalled by few other ship's during the Vietnam era. Among those operations were Operation Bold Marinerhthe largest amphibious operat.ion of the Vietnam conflict and the evacuation operations for Phnom Penh and Saigon, the largest helicopter operation in history. In 1968 OKINAWA was honored to act as the principle recovery ship for the Apollo 8 mission and again rendered assistance to the Apollo program in 1971 by recovering the Apollo 15 astronauts after their splashdown. OKINAWA has proven itself over these 15 years to be a vital and formidable asset of the Navy and will no doubt continue to strive to live up to her title as Proud Lady of the Pacific Fleet. For those with a pension for heights. the mountains surrounding Saseho offered an ideal View of the harbor and city or a chance to lounge in the uncommonly warm temperatures that occurred as if to say, Welcome. . . ,A- HMM-165 Once OKINAWA has transported the Marine Battalion to the hostile area, the men and machines of the embarked Marine helicopter squadron complete the last leg of the assault.
