1980 TOMAHA WK Okemos, Michigan Volume 52 'r ■ Underclassmen pp. 38-63 Academics pp. 64-103 Sports pp. 104-159 Organizations pp. 14-37 2 rK - r Fme pp. 160-191 Seniors Ads pp. 192-219 pp. 220-241 Index pp. 242-249 3 Growing is a scary experience. From the beginning, when you are small and innocent — not to mention ignorant, to the time when you are old, reaching for the alleged spring of wisdom, you encounter many different feelings. Be it fear, sadness, anxiety, happiness, anger, jealousy, disappointment; you experience them. They enrich you, make you a better you. Those emotions, good or bad, will always be a part of you. Remember: Mr. Oberlin’s “zots”? the time of your first and last 4.0? the time you flunked Algebra and had to intercept that report card? the time you stayed up all night for a 1 st hour exam; but slept through it? the enthusiastic attention of the team members at the pep assemblies given in their honor? the time of that first date? the time we met at those Hockey games? These are the foundations which form you and give you your unique personality. Without these experiences, life would be dull without incident. Throughout our whole life we go through continuous changes; whatever they are, they are all real. For all of us these changes are inevitable. We learn together, mature together and even grow old together. Each day we are never the same; from the clothes we wear, to the moods that influence us. New people in our lives shape us whether they are the new friends we make, or the new Okemos administration. We appreciate all the warmth a new friend can offer, yet we understand the cold when we lose one. It is all a part of life. Besides these internal changes, there have been many other external ones which have made Okemos High School as it is today. The new bleachers enabled 750 more people to cheer on the Chiefs. For our formerly empty courtyard a new modern sculpture was commissioned by the “Parent Art Start” committee to alter our environment. Finally, a new sign for the foregrounds was designed and built this year in an attempt to rejuvenate the community’s knowledge of what’s happening in our school. From morning to night, January to December, we all are affected by the experiences in our lives. This book is made for that particular reason; to record everything that means something to us. This is the record of a year’s metamorphosis dedicated to ... metamorphosis: (met'o-mor'fo-sis) Complete transformation of character, purpose, circumstances 8 s a coach: “Participating in sports under him, you had a feeling he was concerned about you beyond just he game; also as a person in terms of your personal growth.” Jon Kreider s a teacher: “Dedicated ... he was always thinking up ways of making it better.” Doug Richey s Assistant Principal: “He handled the job with dignity. He respected students as human beings and never ost his heart.” Doug Collar s Student Activities Director: “The students are his number one concern.” Diane Harsha No faculty member at Oke-nos High School fits the theme f metamorphosis better than Hr. Robert Baker. During his wenty-eight years on the staff at )kemos, he has held jobs rang-ng from Teacher, Coach and 1'lub Sponsor to Vice-Principal tnd Director of Student Activi-ies. Although Mr. Baker’s job itie has changed, the man eneath the title remains the ame: a well-liked, kind-hearted ndividual who has dedicated his life to caring for other people. Obviously, the job as Director of Student Activities was made for a man like Mr. Baker. His occupation gives him the chance to do what he naturally loves doing: working directly with students to help them fully enjoy high school by planning and participating in various activities. Some of his responsibilities include scheduling dances and assemblies, organizing Home- coming, publishing the student newsletter, and acting as an advisor to the student government. Mr. Baker retires from Oke-mos High School this year. He will always be remembered by those students and staff who knew him, as a man whose whole life was devoted to service and who never hesitated to go out of his way for a fellow human being. Mr. Baker coaching the 1956 Varsity Basketball team. Mr. Baker serving student Julie Mermelstein the candlelight pizza dinner auctioned off to her on Helter Skelter Day. With TELEVISION as the theme of this year’s Homecoming, the idea of “Performance” was easy to come by. Spirit Week once again captivated the school into disciplined and sometimes ‘organized’ class cooperation, claiming either Freshmen or Senior Class wins in participation. Although the Juniors took the float contest with ‘Big Bird’ from SESAME STREET, the week's overall winners were the Senior Class as they performed most easily and cheered loudest at Friday’s Pep Assembly. The parade past the Four Corners spotlighted the Chieftain Marching Band, as well as our newly elected Queen NINA MASSA, with King BOB FOSSUM absent at a school golf tournament. Homecoming Night displayed our champion team’s style as they easily defeated Eaton Rapids 50-14. As the following night’s dance ended the annual Homecoming activities, the O.H.S. Football Team maintained their outstanding “performance” as they went on to capture the League Championship undefeated. Student Government Has Power Student Government was engaged in several new attempts this year to raise money, as well as support from the school’s student body. Along with organizing the annual Homecoming festivities, which included court elections, parade and judging class wins, they organized a second annual PEPSI Skateboarding Instructional assembly and sponsored two multi-media films, “Champions” and “Heroes”, which highlighted songs from many of today’s Top 40 Rock-n-Roll Artists. The controversial Community Service Day returned to O.H.S. with many good reviews as well as student cooperation. Raising money for the school’s new Chieftain sign, the Student Government collected $600 for the fund, as well as a chance to hold another Community-Service Day in upcoming years. To continue a program which began last year, the Student Grievance Committee undertook the task of hearing students from all grades and backgrounds voice their opinions of conditions at O.H.S. This opportunity gave both the administration and faculty an insight on solutions to problems or difficulties at our school. To no one's surprise, our own Mark ‘The Nark' Coulter conquered the prize (and no doubt the chili, too!) Congratulations Mark! The National Honor Society was constantly active in both school and community related projects this year. Such projects included: instructions at the Parent Teacher Conferences, answering phones at a WKAR fund drive, and assisting the 4-H Club with the handicapped from Beekman Center. Math and Chemistry tutors were available twice a week after school for students’ aid. This leaves Okemos with a score-board of three wins and one runner-up position in the past four years that the program has been aired. Quiz Bowl questions may cover anything from Science and sports. Usually a team has to win three games to enter the playoffs, but due to the lack of time, Okemos only had to win two games. WKAR-TV provided Okemos an excellent opportunity to participate in the state competition, held for the first time in Marquette, MI; the winners of their regions were invited for the State Championship. Okemos lost to Shelby High School by the close score of 175-200, leaving Okem.os third place in the state. 19 FFA Carries the Seed of Growth The Future Farmers of America is made up of students interested in agriculture and natural resources. This year after attending the state F.F.A. convention and competing in the leadership contest, the club raised 50 chickens and were involved in landscaping around the school. To educate elementary students about accidental poisoning, they distributed literature to parents in the spring, advising them on precautions for poison prevention. This year’s club was involved in an after-school elementary art class with children, plus a sale of hand-made X-Mas ornaments in December. Silkscreened posters were also made to promote the school musical and drama productions. Together with the Latin Club, the group’s exposure to the World’s Art Center in New York proved to be a success. The. International Thespian. Society The Okemos High School International Thespian Society began its 2nd year with a troupe of 30 students. The Thespians, sponsord by Mrs. Kendy, attracted people interested in all aspects of the theatre. Their first project took place at the Fine Arts Festival where they sponsored “Be a Clown” Day. Members of the troupe taught children make-up techniques and demonstrated the art of mime. With the purchase of a button-making machine, the troupe hopes to sell buttons to other clubs and organizations in the future. MEMBERS: Kate Edgar, Richard Bigelow. The work of Jim Bredeck and Roger Carvey was praised by experts at a statewide school journalism seminar. This year’s German Exchange Program involved fifteen high school students from Germany, and two parent chaperones. While here in Okemos, they stayed at the homes of students who were currently studying German. In between the nightly partying held in their honor, they were introduced to bowling, horseback riding and the famed American ‘cheap flick’ MOVIES! (After the influence of ‘Animal House,' their going-away party was to the theme of TOGA! TOGA! TOGA!) Attending the classes of O.H.S. helped them to view an American school system — and gave our interested students first hand knowledge of the German language. The highlight of their visit w'as a trip to Toronto, Canada, via Niagara Falls, where they toured the city and science museum. In honor of their last night in Okemos. a progressive-pot luck dinner u'as held at the various homes of the students, ending their exciting stay in America. To fund each activity, they sold calendars and baked ‘LEBKUCHEN HERZ,’ or heart cookies, for Valentine’s Day, which contained “sweet nothings’’ written in German. As there were no officers this year, they organized committees to plan new events — one being a trip to Frankenmuth, Mich, in the spring. The club also sponsored the annual German Exchange Student Program in the spring. r , Voyage!, Voyage! An English Welcome The French Club was active with their annual parties this year, which included the Christmas Party, Spring Party and French Dinner. Also, a costume party was added to the week-long celebration of Mardi Gras. To fund a trip to Quebec and Toronto, Canada over the summer, the club organized various activities to raise money. The club’s membership this year included twenty-nine students; with four officers. Surprise Birthday in Paris! PRESIDENT: Carla Grano V. The Spanish Club was very successful with their Taco Dinner this year. The money raised from the annual event was enough to fund their yearly trip to a Mexican restaurant, this year’s being “Famous Taco”. Those students that attended were able to use their Spanish, as well as experience a ‘taste’ of the culture. Another activity to raise money included a Spanish candy sale — “Chupa-chups” that came from Barcelona. Due to the political crisis in Spain, the exchange program was delayed until the summer, and involved students from Madrid, rather than Barcelona. To Be Latin ... This year’s Latin Club activities included three cultural field trips; one to Marshall, Michigan, and the other two to New York and Detroit, both in May. The club's fund raisers this year included a candy sale, bake sale and car wash in the spring. The club also held their annual Roman Banquet on April 22. The club, advised and sponsored by Mr. George Gross, consisted of students who pursued an active interest in chess. Fielding a team composed of the seven best players, they participated in the Regional Chess League where they faced opponents such as Holt, Mason and East Lansing. School should prepare students for career and college, yet also prepare students as good human beings.” Douglas Collar, a teacher here of 11 years standing, spends his days teaching four diversified subjects. American Literature, A.P. English, Creative Writing and Media occupy his schedule, but that is far from all. As Area Coordinator for the English and Foreign Language department, he is responsible for every respective class. This includes each level of the Latin, Spanish, German and French languages, every subject from Drama to Expository Writing, and the special courses designed for specific grade levels. Obviously, there is more than surface work to be dealt with, since Mr. Collar also plays an important role as the spokesman for his department. In 1980, mid-year brought the changeover of four teachers which dramatically affected the English department and direction of course study. Those teachers replaced were Miss Fossum and Mrs. Miller, whose counter-parts became Mrs. Adams and Mrs. Haner. Reading, Writing and... 66 c jdami 67 68 ... Parlez Vous? When Earl Zetterholm plans a chemistry lesson, he thinks in terms of the future. He sees our society “increasingly moving toward mathematical and technological development” and wants to prepare his students for that society. Mr. Zetterholm also acts as Area Coordinator for the Science and Math departments. Most of his business as Area Coordinator consists of ordering new materials and allocating a budget. He must also create a balanced Math and Science curriculum including college prep courses such as Algebra, Calculus, Biology, Chemistry and Physics and basic courses such as General Biology, Applied Chemistry, Math Lab and Adaptive Algebra. Everything Mr. Zetterholm works toward in his job as Chemistry teacher and Area Coordinator has a practical purpose: to help students “cope in a technological society to the best of their ability.” 75 11 ini ZPow xs £coti ZPUxuU (iVadnuitje. After 23 years of teaching, one of the most-liked teachers at Okemos High School will be retiring. Although Mr. Walbridgc has centered his teaching around Chemistry and C.P. Science during the past few years, he began his career in Carson City. MI teaching Physics, English, Social Studies and directing the school drama productions. Students agree that Mr. Walbridge cares about his students. “He'll explain problems in detail and is willing to stay after school to help whenever you need it: he’s very fair. The staff spent many hours this summer developing a program that would meet the daily needs of the student and also instill lifetime values of physical fitness. The course began with a unit of self image, which brings out the need for a good physical image. After testing to define areas of strength and weakness, the students applied the training principles they had studied, and developed their own programs. Students set goals in twelve areas and testing occurred every three weeks to evaluate training needs. Health was also a part of the course. Nutrition, substance abuse and major diseases were covered by lecture, films and speakers from various organizations. Students discovered many shocking facts about the foods they eat as they analyzed the hidden ingredients in packaged food, and kept a log of all their meals. Team and individual lifetime sports were covered in the second semester with the emphasis on fundamental skills. The class has been a positive addition to the program and one the staff has enjoyed developing. 90 Ds-xi fowC tt Q ic i J avLi- BeJine.tt zRon Dandziclz There are approaches to learning other than the traditional classroom lecture-examination process. Although founded by many. Mr. Stolz has built, elaborated and enhanced the program to make it as it is recognizable today. Besides teaching Physical Education, his duties include organizing team schedules, coordinating usage and acting as a somewhat financial wizard. Mr. Stolz is also the supporter of the Title IX Act giving equality to both sexes concerning sports. Our great pride in sports should be appreciatively accredited to Mr. Stolz. Robert Baker, O.H.S. Activities Director, was the one man who students could go to arrange extra-curricular social activities. Besides the latter, Mr. Baker assigned lockers, scheduled assemblies and approved fund raising for such things as the new school sign and the senior prom. From first-of-the-year individual student photographs and class ring orders to Senior commencement announcements and caps and gowns. Mr. Baker worked closely with students to accomplish meaningful memories for each student. Larry's Legion Lends Support This year’s baseball team experienced many ups and downs. After a fine 4-1 start, the team slumped to 4-5 and never fully regained its early momentum. A lack of consistency plagued them throughout the season and resulted in a final season record not indicative of the true quality of the team. Despite difficulties on the field, the team received excellent fan support, especially from the enthusiastic members of Larry’s Legion, for which the players were most grateful. For the first time, a student Band Council formed to provide direction and decision making for the band program. Also, after Fall Auditions, the 1979-1980 Marching Band divided into two new concert groups: Concert Winds and select Wind Ensemble. Concert Winds and Wind Ensemble combined once or twice each week as the Symphonic Band, under the baton of Mr. Jim Barry and Mrs. Judy Erdman, the new director of the Kinawa band. Both bands began their season with the Annual Winter Concert in January, which was followed by District Solo and Ensemble competition in February where 15 individual band members qualified for State competition. Both bands were also rewarded with excellent ratings for the festival performance at Jackson High School in March. Later in March, the bands displayed their talent, again, in the Okemos Fine Arts Festival, followed by an outstanding performance at the State Band Festival in late April. The year was brought to an exciting close with the spirited performance of music by composers Percy Grainger and Gustav Holst, among others, for the Spring Concert in May. The entire play takes place on two South Pacific islands during WWII. During the play various romances occur between inhabitants of both islands: A French planter, Emile de Becque, falls in love with Ensign Nellie Forbush and Lt. Joseph Cable has a romance with Liat, a native of Bali Ha’i. The latter half of the play deals with war activities, including a spy mission with Emile de Becque and Joe Cable which ends in the tragic death of the Lieutenant. South Pacific also has a humorous side illustrated by the comic native Bloody Mary and Luther Billis’ hilarious Honey Bun dance. The play was a definite success boasting a sellout crowd with a standing ovation closing night. During the year e orchestra played a Winter Concert featur-g M.S.U. violin teacher Cathy Tart as guest loist, and a Spring Concert with students in Graham, Lisa Kuan, Mark Smith, and cki Stephon as soloists. In between, perform-ces included District and State Orchestra stivals, a Kiddie Koncert for Okemos ele-intary students, and the Fine Arts Festival, le highlight of the year was a trip to Toronto d an exchange concert with music students m Canada. This year’s invitation to our internationally acclaimed orchestra to perform as guest artists came from Toronto. To one-hundred Canadians, the exchange meant new friendships, new partners for square dancing, roller skating and performing Blue Grass. Their visit to Okemos acquainted them with a new culture and our visit to Toronto allowed them to serve as guides to their Eaton Center and the Museum of Natural Science. This was an invaluable exchange between our countries that will always live in the hearts of the participants. ' Musician par excellence. Vicki Stephon Award Winner Mark Smith Thursday, March 20. 1980 marked the beginning of the twelfth annual Fine Arts Festival. The three day festival titled “Arts Of The World” included drama, dance, artwork and all types of musical performances with participants ranging from ages three to adult. And, the Okemos faculty contributed to the success of the program. The Festival came to a stirring conclusion Saturday, following a fun-filled afternoon set up for the children in the community, with a finale performance of “From Sea To Shining Sea involving over two hundred Okemos musicians. 189 190 191 SENIORS 193 Kathy Abraham Kathy Allen Raphael Adley Neera Agrwal Craig Denise Anderson Antcliff Glen Alden Mindy Badge Kreg Baker Andy Baecker Rebecca Baker Erik Bakker-Arkema Mike Barnett Paul Bailey Jim Barron 194 Dawn Bartholic Jeff Black Pam Bowker Don Brown Michael Beadle Brian Sharon Beauchine Beck Nancy Bell Jeffery Brown Margaret Brown Terrence Burke Matt Cadiz 195 Amy Caldwell Amy Clark Tina Connolly Allison Roger Cartwright Carvey Steven Collier Jane Davidson Laura Davis John Decker Mark Chandler Kent Croy Angelika DcKlcinc Diana Cherryholmes David Coleman Bruce Dahnke Kathryn Devereaux 196 Larry Doty Mike Dow Connie Drobac Fred Featberly Chris Ferris Boh Fossum Chuck Gagnier Cindy Gardiner Tom Geyer Anastasia Dzenowagis Mark Fisher Amy Foster Jeni Gifford Tim Ewart Greg Fishman Suzanne Foster 197 Dennis Gilliland Mitchell Gnagi Diana Gomez Mark Gill Chris Glanton Janet Goodwin Ann Graham John Grano Michael Gray John Gritter Bob Gross Laura Haddad Diana Haga Tim Hall Ken Haluska John Hanson 198 Dan Hardy David Heisey Patrick Hillberg Kai—ann Ho Trent Hatton David Hill Susan Hollenson Jon Hause Michael Holzman Deidre Himmelbauer Laura Hollowick Tara Hirst Dani Hatton Doug Hayden Griff Herriman Annette Hobbs 199 Catherine Homan Dehhy Cheryl Jeanette Huldin Hunt Hunt Mark Ingraham Roxana Issari Deborah Kashy Shawn Keenoy Michael Keith Dave Keller Lisa Kennedy Tim Kennedy Cammie Kcssel Bob King foo Sue Kinne Lisa Corryn Klimaszewski Knapp Jackie Krone Lisa Kuan Miriam Lancour Elizabeth Legler Lisa Linn Darcy Look Jordan Lovy Mike Lynch Mark Maimone Jamie Many Jim Maples Martin Marks 201 David Martin Melissa McBride Daniel Mead Michelle Mertz Nina Massa Jim Matthews Leroy Maxie William Mead Lorraine Aneil Jayne Minkel Mishra Mitchell Sara May John McKearney Machcll Mehrens Todd Mohr 202 Kim Myles Leslie Nugent Charles Palm Angela Moisenko Katie Murray Laurie Netzloff Thomas Ojeda Timothy Pirochta Randall Moskal Jon Moyer Elizabeth Mueller Kumar Nalluswami Wayne Nash Rick Northrup Steve Palmer Katrina Pankratz Laurie Patten 203 Matt Rhodes Ulrich Raschke Julie Reed Dale Rhoades Ruth Rome Brenda Romig Tim Russell Tina Sager Sheri Scarlett Roth Kelly Schollc David Quisenberry Cynthia Riedle Marie Romback Julia Rowley Pennie Robke 204 Scott ' Lisa Charles Schoultz Schimler Schuler III Mark Smith Melanie Scott James Sorher Spalding Sparks Ben Sclnvendener Ann Smykay Jonathon Sparks 1ft Diane Scott MarySue Slack Corey Smythc Atm 3 Ann Speicher 205 Victoria Stephon Susan Stone Elizabeth Suinmitt Paula Sutherland David Tenner Robert Thomas Brent Thompson Craig Thompson Stephen Thorsen Diane Tuovila John Versailles 206 Gary Vogt Jana Warren Lori Weidman Lisa Wildeman Jeffrey Wagoner Michelle Robert Walker Wallace Nicolas Wang Debra Waters Gregory Waun Kathryn Weller Robin Wellso Richard Welsch Eric Williams Scott Wilson David Wimmer Kathryn Wing 207 Mike Jean Caroline Deena Wendy Witherill Woehler Woodford Woodrow Wortley Lori Deborah Mary Kathleen Wright Young Zack Zeeff Leanne Steven Suzan Zimmerman Zollner Zutaut Not Pictured: Eric Alam Kyle Bradley Todd Brogan Aeshin Compani-Vala Louise Curtis Sam Curtis Edward Devereaux Nancy Elliott Dan Gallagher Steve Hatfield Ross Henderson Christopher Huxtable Sandra Kimock Melissa Lott Vickie Nickelson GregO’neil Nels Raynor Brian Reed Keith Rodgers Greg Simpson Anil Singh Britton Slocum Steve Sproull Carolyn Stanziano Eric Tabor Barrie Vince Kevin Westmoreland Julia Wilson Nora Zimmer 208 orado sic’s | ‘extrc and ‘ i, if ar egard he coi ■nmer e n s s_ Concl ad f Mexican peope was a stormv0Lini Our maiQage volatile cheujica later.
