A talent-rich Chief eleven made Coach Ed Kiley's last season as head coach a successful one as they tied for the Ingham County League title. Okemos had a fine six-won; one-lost record. In a season filled with highlights and tense moments, the most exciting game of the year was the one with our traditional rival Haslett. The Chiefs came out ahead 20-14, with the winning touchdown coming on a 70-yard pass play from Chuck Clausen to Tom Aaron. The senior-dominated squad was led by 6'5 , 235 lb. tackle Bob Zuver. Bob was a good blocker on offense and a tremendous defensive performer. Throughout the season, the opposition especially respected his defensive ability. Bob was named to the Detroit Free Press all-state class C squad as well as being a unanimous all-county choice. At center was all-county Tom Katalenich. Tom was a vicious tackier and will be remembered for saving the Has- SCOREBOARD Won Oktmos Okemos Oktmos Oktmos Oktmos Stockbridgo Oktmos Oktmos Lost Mason Ptrry Dansvillt Fowlorvillt Haslttt Oktmos lotlit Williamston lett game when he broke through the Haslett line and threw the quarterback for a loss with Haslett inside the one-yard line and seconds to play. Big Art Reese, at the other tackle slot, was a hard-hitting blocker and fine tackier. At the ends, Tom Aaron and Don Kiger were dependable both offensively and defensively. A pair of light but quick guards, Ron Whitmore and Jim Jones, were ideal blockers for the Chiefs' fast-hitting attack. In the backfield, two fast all-county halfbacks, Lee Anderson and Mike Largent, gave Okemos the best running attack in the league. Quarterback Chuck Clausen was probably the best ball-handler in the league. In the latter part of the season the fullback post was filled by big Blaine Knowles, a hard-running sophomore, who was brought up from the reserve team. Many other players saw considerable action as the team had probably the finest bench of any Okemos team. 30
