A talent-rich Chief eleven made Coach Ed Kiley's last season as head coach a successful one as they tied for the Ingham County League title. Okemos had a fine six-won; one-lost record. In a season filled with highlights and tense moments, the most exciting game of the year was the one with our traditional rival Haslett. The Chiefs came out ahead 20-14, with the winning touchdown coming on a 70-yard pass play from Chuck Clausen to Tom Aaron. The senior-dominated squad was led by 6'5 , 235 lb. tackle Bob Zuver. Bob was a good blocker on offense and a tremendous defensive performer. Throughout the season, the opposition especially respected his defensive ability. Bob was named to the Detroit Free Press all-state class C squad as well as being a unanimous all-county choice. At center was all-county Tom Katalenich. Tom was a vicious tackier and will be remembered for saving the Has- SCOREBOARD Won Oktmos Okemos Oktmos Oktmos Oktmos Stockbridgo Oktmos Oktmos Lost Mason Ptrry Dansvillt Fowlorvillt Haslttt Oktmos lotlit Williamston lett game when he broke through the Haslett line and threw the quarterback for a loss with Haslett inside the one-yard line and seconds to play. Big Art Reese, at the other tackle slot, was a hard-hitting blocker and fine tackier. At the ends, Tom Aaron and Don Kiger were dependable both offensively and defensively. A pair of light but quick guards, Ron Whitmore and Jim Jones, were ideal blockers for the Chiefs' fast-hitting attack. In the backfield, two fast all-county halfbacks, Lee Anderson and Mike Largent, gave Okemos the best running attack in the league. Quarterback Chuck Clausen was probably the best ball-handler in the league. In the latter part of the season the fullback post was filled by big Blaine Knowles, a hard-running sophomore, who was brought up from the reserve team. Many other players saw considerable action as the team had probably the finest bench of any Okemos team. 30 Freshmen Learn Fundamentals Row 1: Kep Whitmyer, Lloyd Grobo, Dave Whitmore, Terry Wallin, Bob Young , John Ebcrly, Howard Murphy. The freshman football team was a new idea originated by MSU students Dave Perfect and Al Wells. For a first year experiment, the team turned out very well, winning three out of its four games. An all sophomore reserve team literally tore up the league this year. This is one of the best reserve teams Okemos has seen in a few years. Coach Doug Richey feels many of these boys will step in and take over varsity positions next fall with no trouble at all. Their Richoy, Ron Kozma, Dave Halliday, Roger Stoll, best game of the year was a 33-26 victory over the Holt Rams. The Little Chiefs' lone defeat came in a bitterly contested battle with the Haslett Vikings. The mid-season loss of Big Blaine Knowles to the varsity did not stop their march- for the crown 31 zz Reserve Season Double Success Row 1: Chuck Gifford, Vernon Stehmon, Tom Clark, Bob Breckenfold, Oavo Hatch. The team, coached by Doug Richey, had a good year in the won-lost department, finishing second in the unofficial league reserve standings, and also gave valuable experience to many players, the primary purpose of a junior varsity squad. The team was led by Little John Shick, a hustling guard with a fine outside set shot. John, the team's leading scorer with a 14-point average, contributed to the team spirit with his determined playing. At the other guard post was Dave Halliday, a hard driving little guard who can move faster with the ball than most players can without it. At center was tall Bill Martin who displayed great spring and speed for a big man. Bill showed great improvement over last year, especially as a rebounder. At one forward posi- tion was Roger Stoll, a steady performer all season, who showed promise with his good jump shot. At the other forward was the team's only freshman starter, Bob Burton Breckenfeld. Bob has great promise as a scorer with a good jump shot and set shot. Besides these starters, many other players saw more than limited action. Sophomores Roy Hoskin, Jim Liskey, and Topper Coats, and freshmen Bob De-Lind, Dave Hatch, Guy Sober, Vernon Stehman, Chuck Gifford, and Tom Clark all played often and helped the team greatly. This year's sophomores should help the varsity squad a great deal next year, and the freshmen should form the nucleus of a fine reserve squad in the '59-'60 season. 33 Fine Talent Heads Strong Team Row 1: Leo Anderson, Chuck Clausen, Tom Aaron, Joe luttrell, Bill Johnson, Fred Hoffecker, Pat Elmquest. Row 2: Manager Bill Wight, Mike luck, Don Kiger, Jim Breckenfeld, Aldon Stampfly, Shop Richard. Dave Nelson, Coach Bob Baker. This year's basketball team talent-wise was one of the finest teams Okemos has ever had. The fine playmaking and fabulous shooting of Joe Luttrell, combined with the rebounding of Bill Johnson and Tom Aaron, made an all around fine season for this year's cagers. As was expected, Joe had to carry a large part of the scoring honors on his shoulders. The only returning all-county member and this year's unanimous choice for the honor, Joe took the job well in hand and turned in a good 16.2 points per game by hitting a fabulous 53 percent of his shots. At the end of the season he was placed on the Detroit Free Press all-state team. To back up Joe was tall Bill Johnson. The big 6'4 center was a tower of strength under the backboard. Along with that he had a fine jump shot from the free throw line. He was a much improved player from last year and gave the Chiefs their needed height under the boards. Tom Aaron was the other big man this year. He was not a big scorer, but he came in with points when they were needed. He was a good defensive player, a strong rebounder, and had much to do with the Chiefs' great win over Everett. Chuck Clausen, defensive player and extraordinary playmaker, was the sparkplug of the team. He always seemed to be in the right place at the right time to break up a fast break or grab a rebound. He was a fine passer, and often set up the other four men for easy baskets. The only junior on this year's team was Pat Elmquest. He had a fine outside shot and could usually be counted on to break up the opponent's defense in nothing flat. The Chiefs had more bench strength than any team in the league. At the head of it was Fred Hoffecker, Lee Anderson, and Jim Breckenfeld. These three boys could be called on to turn in fine performances at any time. 52 Okemos Mason 66 53 Okemos Stockbridge 65 57 Okemos Dansville 43 76 Okemos Dansville 57 68 Okemos Williamston 50 44 Okemos Stockbridge 66 •60 Okemos St. Marys 40 62 Okomos Williamston 63 48 Okemos St. Johns 60 63 Okemos Haslett 54 50 Okemos Mason 60 57 Okemos Everett 55 62 Okemos Leslie 46 48 Okemos Leslie 57 46 Okemos Haslett 36 64 Okemos Fowlerville 49 39 Okemos Fowlervillo 30 62 Okemos Resurrection 69 Christmas Tournaments 34 Joe luttrell Bill Johnson Tom Aaron lee Anderson Chuck Clausen Fred Hoffecker Bill Jonei 0. $ Pat Elmqueit Roger Stoll t Chuck Clouion I Bob Crafton Chuck Stoll John Goa Veteran Team Has Fine Season Row 1: Shop Richard, Jim Slovens, Mike largent, Jim Jones, Pat Elmquest, Bill Jones. A nucleus of six returning lettermen made Okemos a strong contender for the league baseball title this year. The team improved from last year, as only three players were lost by graduation. Returning infielders were Chuck Clausen, a quick first baseman; Chuck Stoll, a steady man at second; rifle-armed Gale Stevens, a fast shortstop; and Pat Elmquest a fine hitting third base-man. In the outfield Jim Jones and Bob Crafton, a pair of great fielders were back. The pitching chores were handled by knuckleballer Don Riggs, who won his letter at Sexton last year, and Shep Richard, who showed a fine curve. The catching was done by John Gaa and Jim Kiger. The team was coached this year by Harold Pendley, who also coached the wrestling and reserve football teams. With experience and speed as primary assets, it was a fine season for the Chiefs. The only apparent weakness was in the batting department with no long-ball hitter on the squad. Strong opposition was experienced from a veteran Stockbridge crew. The season also marked the debut of Webberville in the Ingham County League. 37 Jim Jones Chuck Clausen Pat Elmquest Okemos Takes Second in County Meet Row 1: John Guitafion, Dick largent. Row 3: lorry Beaman, Tom Nothitine, Dave Davidion, Tom Aaron, Bob Zuver, Bob Steller, David Holliday, Bill Martin, Coach Richey. Okemos enjoyed another fine track season. The 1958 team placed second in the county meet, and though some fine performers were lost through graduation, a good number returned. Heading the returning lettermen was senior Jerry Husby, the reigning league 100-yard dash champion. Another fine dash man was sophomore Dave Halli-day. A trio of good runners. Bill Martin, Dave Davidson, and Aldan Stampfly, provided good strength in the distance events. Tom Aaron was among the best in the league in the 440 this year. Defeat of Haslett Cl imax of Season Row 1: Coach Bockor, John Brocci, Tom Nothstino, Aldan Stampfly, Davo Davidion, Bill Wight, Rick Turner, Jim Liikey. Row 2: Run Horton, John Moija, John Ramiey, Buzz Buzzoll, John Shick, Guy Sober Bruce Campbell. Although the cross country team did not have a winning season this year, Coach Don Becker was well pleased with the performance of many of his boys. Among the outstanding runners were Aldan Stampfly and Dave Davidson. Their lone win this year was over arch rival Haslett in a triangular meet. Even though this season wasn't particularly bright, next season things should improve immensely with all but one of this year's lettermen returning. 38 Golfers Have Winning Season Row 1: Daryl Drew, Rick Pruim, Bill Johnson, Shep Richard, Jerry Marshall. Row 2: Coach Bakor, Vernon Stehman, Stan Powell, Bob Brockenfold, Jim Breckenfeld, Pat Elmquest, Ross Aaron. This year's golf team had to do a lot of work to beat the fine six win-one loss record of last year's team. Coach Bob Baker had high hopes for another fine season with three lettermen returning for this year's squad. The returning men are Bill Johnson, Rick Pruim, and Shep Richard. Along with these, freshmen Bob Breckenfeld and his junior brother Jim helped the squad immensely. Shep Richard is the No. 1 man again this year, the position he held most of last season. The other three positions were filled by last year's lettermen with plenty of competition from the freshmen. Grapplers Have Best Season Ever Knoeling: Larry Beaman, Donny Soltow. Standing: Coach Pendley, Art Rco e, Al Reese, Bill Jones, Bill Siebert, Jerry Brinker, Dan Rahfeldt, Jim Stovons, Bob Dorn, Jim Oohmen, Mike Largent. The Okemos wrestling team moved into full swing this year with Coach Harold Pendley getting the sport off to an early start. Lettermen Bill Jones, Art Reese and Mike Largent all turned out for this year's squad. New additions to the team at the start of the season helped the team very much near the end of the season. Some of the new boys this year were Jim Stevens, Al Reese, Bill Siebert, Bob Dorn, and Larry Beaman. The team managed only one victory, but their lack of two light weights and lack of a heavy weight had much to do with this. The team is a young one and, with a good start, next year could find some boys in the state finals. 39 Ok emos High School This is Walter Croncowsky. Today, YOU ARE THERE presents unknown bits of history about the Class of '59. The following are little gems about the people who have helped to make this class one of the most outstanding ever to hit Okemos High. We sincerely hope that you will find this both interesting and entertaining. Now we present YOU ARE THERE. The scene is a street in Detroit; it is night time. Five senior boys are seen sneaking along, their collars pulled apprehensively around their faces. They approach a building; it is a Burlesque Show; they buy their tickets and go in. It is night time again. You see before you a long, dark, deserted street. Suddenly two cars come tearing at us at top speed. They are a '52 Chevy Coupe and a '58 Chevy Impala. Behind the wheels are Wild Man Whitmore and Mad Dog Johnson in their epic Impala-Coupe drag. The scene changes to the MSU Union Building shortly after the 1958 Lincoln Center Youth Conference. Several custodians are speculating as to what could have happened to ten of the ash-trays there, just after the Class of '59 delegation left. Before you is a large class room. Jerry Cohen and Larry Beaman are standing at the front of it. Jerry has just presented Larry with a Liar's Certificate. Larry is bitter. You are in the principal's office. The school officials are trying to figure out why twenty-three seniors were absent the day term papers were due. 40 Presents You Are There’ It is a hall in Okemos High. A group of boys are standing around with a displeased look on their faces. After looking and listening, you realize' they are members of the Classes of '58 and '59 making plans to boycott the lunch line. The scene is the old gym at OHS. Several members of the Class of '59 have just presented the Class of '58 with a plaque in honor of losing the intramural basketball tournament. Now a young man is seen madly dancing, his face contorted with the emotional intensity of his gyrations. It is Mr. Webster rocking and rolling at his Christmas party last year. The scene changes to the balcony of a church. A boy is seen sleeping an unrestful sleep in one of the pews. It is Bob Crafton spending the night in the Okemos Community Church. The Class of '60 has just stolen the Class of '59's bell, hidden it in an old garage, and are now standing around apprehensively awaiting repercussions from the Senior Class. Several seniors are seen approaching the garage. They stop and talk to the juniors. The juniors are informed that they will be prosecuted unless they return the bell. The juniors are now seen sheepishly returning the bell. 41 Board of Education: Lyman Bratzler, Clarence Prentice, Rex Wilkins, Clare Gunn, Robert Darragh. Seniors On June 9, Commencement Day, as the members of the class of '59 walked proudly down the aisle of the new high school gym to receive their long awaited diplomas, their thoughts probably went something like this: We've sure complained a lot these past four years, but we're afraid we're going to sort of miss high school. Boy, our freshman year sure seems like a part of the buried past now! Sophomore year, too. Guess we really began to live last year when we were juniors. We watched the senior activities enviously and planned for our own. But we didn't just sit around planning all the time; we had plenty of activities of our own. Our junior president was Joe Lut-trell; our vice-president, Diane Kelty,- our secretary. Chuck Stoll; and our treasurer, Judy Hulkonen. Besides sponsoring several dances, our class put on a play, The Inner Willy, during the spring of its junior year. Also during that spring, we finally participated in the glamorous event — the Junior-Senior Prom. It even seemed glamorous despite the fact that it was our class duty to foot not only our own bill, but that of the seniors as well. Finally, in the fall of 1958, we started our last year at Okemos High School. The time went a lot faster than we expected. Our senior class officers were Chuck Stoll, president; Lee Anderson, vice president; Judy Hogle, secretary; and Harold Spross, treasurer. Our class sponsors were Mrs. Grinnell, Mrs. Clemow, and Mrs. Davis. As seniors, we found that along with the many rewards and privileges of being the supreme beings of the school, there came a great many responsibilities as well. We were expected now to take a far more active part in the more serious school activities than ever before. Besides taking on heavy academic loads, seniors held many important positions of authority in the school. The seniors on football, baseball, basketball, and track teams helped win many victories for Okemos High. Diane Kelty was captain of our cheerleading squad. Joe luttrell was the president of the Student Representative Assembly this year. Judy Hulkonen was president of the Honor Society and Carol Price was an editor of the Tomahawk this year. Despite the heavy academic and extra curricular responsibilities we still found time enough for social activities. The really outstanding social event of the season was, of course, the Junior-Senior Prom. This year we were the honored ones, and the Junior Class footed our bill. And now we're graduating, leaving all the work and all the fun too, behind us. Even though we're really glad to graduate, we feel sort of funny, sort of . . . well, . . . nostalgic! 55 Mory Chrisfino Ashley Chris -The way I see it, the moro you itudy, the more there is to forget. lorry Beamon - Honey, you'll get that basket to grandmother's a lot faster in my convertible! Row 1: Rick Pruim, Sharon Bohstodt, Roberta Darragh, Gary Roberts. Row 2: Mr. Walbridge, Mrs. Byington, Mr. Richey. Juniors The 1960 Junior Class has achieved another fantastic goal. The class officers. President Rick Pruim, Vice-President Roberta Darragh, Secretary Sharon Bohstedt, and Treasurer Gary Roberts helped the class attain its goal. Our sponsors, Mrs. Byington, Mr- Richey, and Mr. Walbridge also advised us. Representing our class for SRA were Ann Grettenberger, Sandy Hulkonen, and Mary Wilkins. The juniors started the year with a bang-up dance. This was followed by a great turn-out in football. During this season we had the honor of winning first prize of all Homecoming floats. This boosted our morale and helped us to sponsor more dances, including the St. Patrick's Day Dance. To top off our year of glory was the Junior-Senior Prom, held for the first time on two consecutive nights. On the first night a dinner was held in the Steven T. Mason Cafeteria and attended by only juniors and seniors. The following night was dancing for seniors, juniors, and guests in the new gymnasium. We hope to accomplish as much and more in our great senior year. 73 Prom planning and hard work Kris Aifola Jerry Brinker Marion Coleman Paul Ashley John Brocci mt ) Lottie Crafton Gary Crandall Roberta Darragh Lee Docker Karen Bernor Sharon Bohstedt Martha Cardone Mary Cardone Jean Bredahl Alyin DeYoung Mardell Dietz Judy Donaldson Gerald Edgecomb Davo Ewing Carol Foote Jim Gober Tom Drops sr'ji Denny Emory Bob Dorn Pat Elmquest 74 helped prepare the Junior Class Doborah Hill Dianne Hodowaine Dale Hoke Ron Kelemen John Mitchell Davo Notion Pon Kfger Myrno Kleis Dawn Loudenslager Mike Luck Jim Oehmen Margaret Oja Tom Gunn Sandy Hulkonen Kathy Kutsea Janot Martin John Gustafson a Sharon Katalenich Largent Ann McNitf Cheryl Hamner Errol Kaufman Judy Lawrence 75 Joan Pamment for its last year at Okemos Kermif Shaull Lynn Sich Bethann Sims Kathy Wosko Barb Youngs Marlene Zoss SHUTTER SHY Diane Knowles Larry Quinlan Bob Yeoman Rick Pruim Bruce Reason Barb Reuffer Gary Roborts Gary Sawyer Laurel Snider Aldan Stampfly Jack Standen Carolyn Thiel Ruth Anne Thomas Ron Waltx 76 Row 1: Ann Smith, Bill Jones, Dave Halliday, Roger Stoll. With our sophomore year successfully drawing to a close, we are looking forward to being juniors. But the good times we have had this year will be missed by all. Our class has taken part in lots of school activities this year. Everyone pitched in on the construction of the Homecoming float. Though it didn't take a prize, we were proud of it, nonetheless- Our contributions to the Homecoming court were Sue Martin and Bill Martin (not related!). We made a good showing in sports this year, especially in football. A big percentage of the reserve championship team was made up of hard-hitting sophomore boys. I guess none us will quite forget the excitement and glamour of sponsoring our first formal — the annual Silver Bells dance. It looked as though the whole school turned out for the big nighty but we enjoyed the preparations almost as much as the dance itself. Of course it would have been almost impossible for us to organize or complete any of these activities if it hadn't been for the assistance and leadership of our class officers, sponsors, and representatives. Thanks go to Dave Halliday, our hard-working president; Roger Stoll, our competent vice-president; Ann Smith, our pretty secretary; and Bill Jones, our money-making treasurer. Another vote of gratitude goes to our class sponsors. Miss Schram, Mrs. Kluiber, Mrs. Moses, and Mr. Swegles, without whose help we certainly would have found ourselves lost in many matters. And of course a big chorus of thank-yous go to our SRA representatives Sue Martin, Carol Piper, and Dan Conklin. It is with regret that we see the close of a year that has meant so much excitement and growth for us all. 77 Class of 61 sponsored Silver Bells, Jim Barnard Toppor Coats Lynda Curtis Miko Cusick Bob Atwood Dave Cohon Darlene Dashner Watch thatl Jack Baldwin Jim Barlow Buzz Buzzoll Terry Cook Dan Conklin Barbara Delamarter Donald Dickinson Nancy Ferrar Ponny Emery John Gaa Pat Beach Corinno Corkroy Diano Diotz 78 Virginia Gates Doris Ginnow purchased long-awaited class rings, Susan Gray David Groh Dove Holliday Leslie Hart Bob Hatch Cathy Hawkins Mike Hilley Marsha Hodge Ruth Hoke Russ Horton Roy Hoskin Suo Hubbard Mortho Kenworthy Jackie King Carolyn Kinney Blaine Knowles Ron Koxma Ed Lantz Linda Marlatt Jerry Marshall Jon Marshall Mold it. Freshmen The Class of '62 has the distinction of being the largest entering class in the history of Okemos — 127 students. President Toni Peterson, Vice-President Siri Clay, Secretary Linda Miller, and Treasurer Chuck Gifford very capably directed the affairs of the class. In SRA we were represented by Dave Young, Sally Woolner, and Mary Beth Taylor. Our thanks go to Mr. Ekstrom, Mrs Wilzer, Mrs. Kent, and Mrs. McGowan for their help in sponsoring us. Our proud entry, a float with the theme Our Game's Wrapped Up With Scotch Tape , won third place in the Homecoming parade. We were equally proud of Judy Byington and Dave Hatch, our representatives in the Queen's and King's courts. Marilyn Stratton and Sharon Ingersoll contributed their fine talents to the reserve cheerleading squad. The freshmen teams in football and basketball show great promise for providing valuable varsity material. We completed our year by sponsoring a dance for the seniors — one at which everyone had a wonderful time. We feel that the year has progressed very successfully, and we are looking forward to our three remaining years at Okemos High School. 83 Largest entering class is initiated Russ Aaron Barbio Adarm Barbara Ball Jon Bartow Sharon Brown Geno Brownfield Bruce Campbell Karen Chenoy Walter Cornell Susie Curtiss John Airola Mary Alamazon Jill Axlino Vicki Backus Larry Best Bob Boykin Sandy Brauer Bob Breckenfeld Marleno Burch Rose Ella Burko Sally Burkloy Judy Byington Cheryl Chiesa Tom Clark Slri Clay Stanley Conroy Bob Dclind John DoYoung Clyde Donaldson Bill Dunkel John Eborly Rodnoy Ellison Cheryl Fronch Patty Furgala Chuck Gifford Carolyn Griggs Lloyd Grobo Margot Grovos 84 into high school by attending Mark Hadley Ron Hansen Sue Harris James Harvey Dave Hatch Harry Hayden Jerry Hunt Sharon Ingorsoll Pat Isenhath Judy Johnson Susan Jones Nancy Kaiser Karen Kaltenegger Judi Keller David Kleis Vicki Koo Jeanette Kreider Davo Krider Bernie Marcussen Duffy Martin Linda Miller Winnie Miller Howard Murphy James Nash 85 dances and athletic events Dan ftahfeldt Jessie Riggs Simmons • mi Charles Vestal Danny Wilkins Pam Wright Vernon Stohman Vernor Vingo John Williams Sharon Wright Jane Rons Ron Roberts Diane Smithcors Marilyn Stratton Terry Wollin Joan Reynolds Guy Sobor Mary Both Taylor Tom Wheoker Dave Young Bob Youngs Jim Rhodes Rich Schiff Kathy Solomon David VanKolvering Dave Whitmore Sally Richards Ron Simmons Melvin Sprout Jim Vawter Ken Whitmyer Shutter.Shy Richard Dorn Jim Greer Nonie Havens Gary Morehouse Jim Pond Gary Preston Judy Rehklau John Romwalter Larry Sich Don Stevens 86 Eighth graders bid good-bye to Alieo Alden Nancy Adams Janet Adler Sylvia Andrus Patricia Ballard Kenny Barnard Karl Boedecker Ann Blomquist n Chris Coburn Karen Cartor Alan Cooper Marcia Corkroy Sally Crafton Bonnie Baylee Tom Beaman Howard Belknap Noncy Bohstedt Roxanne Boykin Judy Brinker Bonnie Cutlor Jim Darragh Jean Docker Michael Denny Janot Donny Susie Dodgo Norman bberly Paul Edwards Jim Eichmeior 87 Ok emos Junior High and stand Nancy Ellison Gale Grobe Bill Hicks Madelyn Kornmeyer Bill McDowell Bobbie English David Federou Katie Johnson Mark Johnson David Krause Darlene largent Dione McFarren Mike MeNilt Nancy Miller Rebecca Miller Norma Miller Bruce Gardner Marilyn Gibler Clarence Griggs Wendy Hamner Charles Haynes Chris Heim Bill Hoskin Marilyn Hotaling Dick Johnson Eric Keltv Dick Kiaor Stanley Kleis Dorthy Leu Randy Martin Bill McCloud 88 on the threshold of high school.
