As young citizens of this growing State, we realize the great heritage which is ours in being a part of a citizenry who look with pride to the colorful history of the past and with eager anticipation and an abiding faith in the future. Realizing that there have been, and are still, many in our local Community, County, State, and Nation who by their contributions have left, and are leaving, their footprints in the sands of time, thus causing inspiration and meriting admiration, we feel that it is very fitting to recognize these citizens on this anniversary. So to the FOUNDERS and LEADERS of our COMMUNITY, COUNTY, STATE, and NA- TION, we proudly dedicate the 57 Panther! Second - To be tolerant and sensitive citizens - so that our society may not suffer the moral sickness that is bigotry - and may clearly perceive the values and the virtues cherished in other societies. Third - To be skilled and accomplished citizens - able to grasp the great levers, turn the giant wheels, of this new atomic age, as nature finally surrenders to men so many of its colossal se- CICS. Fourth - To be wise and reflective citizens, thankful for the new leisure, promising a new free- dom from much toil - not merely to relax in pleasure, but to cultivate the mind and to nourish the spirit. To be wholly educated, in the sense that man is a spiritual and intellectual and phy- sical being. America needs citizens strong in their ideals and spiritual convictions, healthy in their bodies, and tirelessly inquiring in mind. And finally - To be bold and courageous citizens, knowing that strength and sacrifice are the indispensable saving weapons of freedom - and knowing that the frontier in America, that rules so much of our history, has become, in this age, the frontier that is America - leader of free nations, hope of free men. E. oAKEs coNTmsuTEs LONG TENURE or srnvlct TO ANNALS or HISTORY 1 With a total of nineteen years as Superintendent of Okemah Schools, Cecil E. Oakes has guided an expansion program through the years with keen judgment, understanding, and an unwavering willingness to work toward the building of a better school system and a better community. Coming here in 1938, Mr. Oakes supervised the finishing of the Noble School. Finding the school system heavily in debt, and the school plant in a run-down condition, he set out to balance the budget and to plan for expansion. After improving the program of the schools to the extent that both the junior high and senior high schools were fully accredited, Mr. Oakes then turned his attention to much needed facilities. ln 1941 the Band and Shop Building was completedg then the Vocational Agriculture Building was added in 1948, the new Gymnasium in 1949, the modern Cafeteria in 1950, and finally the new Auditorium was com- pleted in 1952 at a cost of 381, 760. 80. With dimensions of 110 feet in length by 60 feet in width, this auditorium is a mark of distinction for Okemah, and the pride of the Okemah students. The latest building project, the new Home Economics Cottage with 1800 square feet of floor space giving ample room for all phases of home economics, was completed and ready for use at the beginning of the 55 school year at a cost of 510, 000. Now completely equipped and beautifully furnished, the Cot- tage is a favorite meeting place for dinners, teas, and other social activities. Today, in spite of all the building program and other improvements, there is a substantial balance in every account, no indebtedness, no bonds outstanding, while there is a determined look in the eyes of Mr. Oakes as he talks of the needs of more educational facilities. Having served as President of the local Kiwanis Club, Lieutenant Governor of this Kiwanis District, Superintendent of Sunday School, active member of the Chamber of Commerce, and participating in all phases of civic, social, and church activities, Mr. Oakes has shown his willingness to accept responsibility and his capacity to work and get things accomplished. For his long tenure of service to the Okemah Schools and to the community, we salute Mr. Oakes as a LEADER who merits a place of honor inthe history of Oklahoma. 11 BOARD OF EDUCATION Mr. Cecil E. Oakes, Superintendent of Schools: Mr. Boyd Bibb, Member: Mr. Ira Cowan, Vice Presidentg Mrs. S. G. Ryan, President. Our sincere thanks to the Okemah Board of Education for contributing their part in the growth of Okemah and our state of Oklahoma. Under the leadership of Mrs. S. G. Ryan, who has faithfully served as President for the past nineteen years, our Board of Education has provided the educational needs of our community in a commendable manner ever striving to keep apace with the changing times. ' The Realization of a Dream The Okfuskee County Library with its 25, 165 books and 30 sets of encyclopedias is one of the most valuable cultural assets in our community. With a circulation of 61, 255 books in 1956, we realize, after a brief glance back through the years, that we have not always been so fortunate. Our library, as with all great institutions and ideals, started with a dream. It seems that this was the subject of aspeech by Rev. I. W. Hodges to the Kiwanis club in Jan- uary, 1927. Three months later, with the support of fifteen civic groups, a library was operating in Okeman. In the beginning, the library board consisted of the late A. L. Atchison, Mrs. Pearl C. Bras, Mrs. Olive Martin, T. H. Wren and the only surviving charter member of the board, Mrs. V. K. Chowning. The library started with 400 books contributed by the citizens of Okemah with Miss Nellie Oiler as the librarian, and was located in the 300 block on West Broadway. A few months later lt was moved to the city hall, where Mrs. Mary Hudson and Miss Leota Wright served as librarians. The present stone building was a W. P. A. project and was built in 1935. The con- venience of the students in the Okemah schools was a decisive factor in choosing the site for the library building. Other than the charter members of the board, we find the list of those who have served inthis capacity include: Mrs. Mae Merrell, Rev. I. W. McMullen, Mr. L. M. McGood win, Mr. Clarence Rose, Mr. Henry Aberson, Quinton Griffith, John Foglesong, Rev. J. W. Hodges, Dr. H. K. Maxwell, Rev. John S. Price, C. R. Humphrey and the members of the board at the present time which consists of Jack Suong, chairman: Mrs. R. L. Da- vis, secretaryg Gail Kennedy, Roger Standley, Mrs. Juanita Rowe and Mrs. Chowning. Since moving to the present location, the librarians have been Mrs. H. A. Dolen, Mrs. Glenn E. Dill and the present librarian, Mrs. Ethel Smyth. 'I'hey have been ably assisted by Miss Mildred Wyatt and Mrs. R. T. Smith. So thanks to all of you and to the many others who have done so much to provide us with one of the finest libraries for its size in the state of Oklahoma. YF 2 ,I W W 'Q f , ? COTTON SMITH A graduate of 1930 has had a most colorful mili- tary career. Entering the National Guards as a 2nd Lieut. when they mobilized in 1940, he went to Ft. Sill for further training: was promoted to lst Lieut. and then Captain. Went overseas in July 1943 to Sicily. The 180th, supposedly landed on a 3000 yard front east of Scogliti, were scattered by landing craft over 12 miles of beach, Capt. Smith, then comman- ding First Battalion Headquarters Co. . gathered what men he could and helped stand off a counter attack to the landing of Herman Goering's Division, support- ed by Nazi armor. Although outnumbered and out- gunned, Smith's men stopped the attack. When the Commander of Baker Company became a casualty, Smith took that over. It became a focal force in the leap-frogging tactics of the 45th across Sicily, praised so highly by Gen. Omar Bradley. It was at Motta Hill mass in action that gave the name of Bloody Ridge to that salient, where on personal reconnaissance which always marked his battle command, Smith found a tunnel the enemy failed to mine and saved a half mile of bitter fighting over a mountain. On Anzio, Smith became a Major, a Battalion Exec. and often a Battalion Commander in absence of higher rank, before the breakout, the march on Rome, and later the fourth amphibious landing on the coast of France. After the Rhineland, he was transferred to the 179th Infantry as a Battalion Commander. In Dec. 1944 when the 45th Infantry Division drove north out of Alsace into Siegfried line defenses of the Palatinate in Germany, Smith's battalion was hard pressed at the front. This didn 't keep Smith from going from foxhole to foxhole on Ian. 2 - not exhorting men to fight - but checking the situation personally and telling the men who won the Bowl game in America the day be- fore. That was worth more than hot food for morale. That was also one of the touches which made Smith one of the most popular officers ever to wear the Thunderbird. In an attempt to relieve pressure on their lines in Alsace, the Germans threw a heavy striking force of several divisions into American lines, the center of the force hitting an unprepared division fresh from the States, unsupported by artillery. It crumbled and the enemy pushed through to the Alsatian plain. The 45th pulled out of its position and in- to the hole left by the crumbling division. The German attack grew into a salient called the Bitsche Bulge. Fighting step by step Smith and his men took the mountain town of Goetzenbruck, using a ganite factory there as a strong point, where mortar and machine guns held off for days the German counter at- tacks. That didn't keep Smith from going on with part of his battalion to take the vital communications center of Althorn. That was Cotton Smith, the citizen soldier, in World War II, in highlight. That war ended. Peacetime 45th was reorganized. Regimental commander of the 180th was Cotton Smith. The division was the first post war guard division to be completely organized, first to hold summer training camp, one of the first called out for the Korean conflict. Back into duty went Smith with the 45th. The first division casualty was Jerry Smith, who long since had followed his father into service, and who was with the first unit getting into position when he was injured by a land mine. Cotton Smith is most repre- sentative of the spirit which has made his division one of the best. That 's almost an actuarial statement - not particularlya bouquet - the number of combat days, amphibious landings, and other feats of arms assure the record. There are many others like him - that's how and why the record was made - but the Cotton Smith 's presence has been responsible for America's military successes, as others have in civilian roles in their towns.
