LIPE PRINCIPAL Dear Students, It is quite a story to argue that a high school or college education is needed for citizenship, sportsmanship, leisure and recreation, culture ethical understanding, as well as a general knowledge of the liberal arts Again we hope we have a common understanding of the purpose of our being and staying in school. If school is important to success in work, it follows that you must try to be as successful as possible in your school career. When the nation needs the best from everyone of us, it is the duty of each to get all the benefits possible from the educational tunities that are available. Personally I would like to see more of you concerned with Hhow you can get out of schooln instead of Hhow much you can get out of Then you will be ready to start when you receive that much coveted ma. Briefly then, all this work and preparation is for a big start graduation. My sincere thanks to the Editor, her staff, and the sponsor of NPANTHEHU for another wonderful job of production. Feel! 771072464 These boys are feeding out five Hereford steers in a program spon- sored by the Tulsa Chamber of Commerce. The projects purpose is to get Oklahoma boys to produce the kind of beef that some of the meat packers are buying and ship- ping in from the corn belt states. The Okemah boys are the largest participants of any chapter in the state. Each boy will receive expense paid trips to the feed lots of two famous ranches to observe feeding and management of beef cattle. These ranches are located in Okla- homa and in Kansas. r M ri Dmuw we Scwmzam ,Eg ., if First row: Bob Westrope, Barbara Massey, Francis Cochran, Vera Reed, Darlene Ellexson, Carolyn Branscum, Starlene Smithee, Louise Cooper, Bonnie Wilson, OA Second row: Rita Speer, Yvonne Leeper, Joanna Anderson, Joanna Smith, Florence King, Mary Walsh, Malcolm, Cochran, Elizabeth Garrett, Third rowg Franklin Neal, Dwaine Brimer, John Barryman, Phillip Stephens, Marvin Strickland, Jimmy LeVieux, Eugene Farris, James Bennett. 1 Y -1 Q Q X 1 77,4 Clara Cook, Verna Shepard, Glenna Shepard, Sandra Whitney, Sandra McMullen, Charlotte Tolleson, Mrs. McGraw and Miss Tippit, Sponsors. -.Qs ri i I3 3 1 ' N' -4 'G - A--4 1 M.Qwf f f l ' I .x XE 1 .qaw lub ,Q .Aki n , if ., , fawgzgjts , Nu 4 1 Ypy idk 2 lx! In football, opponents of very high standing were met. Although the schedule included several class A schools, Okemah still came up with a 5 won, 5 lost record, which is very good considering the opposition met. It has also been a very prosperous basketball year. The grade school program which was begun only a few short years ago brought results in the Bearden Toumament, when Okemah won the runner-up trophy. Junior High also had an exceptional team, they won the runner-up trophy in the Okfuskee County Tournament and won the East Central Conference Championship. The High School team is said to be the best in years with 13 won, 2 lost, winner of the Weleetka Invita- tional Tournament: winner of the Okfuskee County Tournament, and winner of the District Tournament. The following boys made the All District football team: Nolan Coker, End, Raymond McKown, Tackle, Tommy Coale, Center, Dwain Gregory, Back: Sammy Williamson, Back. So to the coaches, players, and students who had a part in this year's athletic program, hearty congratulations are in order! 'L' 45 W ... Peck. Their projects include beds, cedar chests, desks, cocktail tables, coffee tables and fireplaces. The Production and Welding classes have made 28 oak typing tables, a speakers' stand for the auditorium and an executive desk for the Superintendents' office. Modernistic steel desks for the grade schools are being constructed with a goal of 80, enough for five rooms, to be completed, These boys and their instructor, Mr, Peck, are to be commended on their fine work and its lasting benefits to our school. .'Z'f. I RADIO NETWORK SHOW HONORS GLENN DILL FAMILY AT OKEMAH The Glenn Dill Family of Okemah was chosen by the NBC radio program, Welcome Travelers, as the Christmas Family of 1953--the family who best carried the spirit of Christmas throughout the year, Judges who made the selection were Hollywood columnist Hedda Hopper, NBC news analyst John Cameron Swayze, and TV and film star Loretta Young. The Dill Christmas family story was heard during the Welcome Travelers show at 9 a. m. Christmas Day over radio station WKY. The Christmas family includes Mr. and Mrs. Dillg Mrs. Dill's mother, Mrs. Brown, a son, Glenn E. Jr.g and a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Dill Barrett. The Dills were nominated by Mrs. James Thurman and Mrs. Earl Davidson, and endorsed by the entire community. Mrs. Thurman secured the necessary biographical information from the Dills and their 75 scrapbooks, which cover the community life of Okemah from 1903--to the present day, and Mrs. Davidson wrote the letter of nomination, which carried more than 600 signatures. Turning the pages of the eight page letter, the reader notes instance after instance of the Dills' service to others. Mrs. Davidson writes, When Glenn, Jr. , was 18 months old, and Mrs. Dill was a Primary teacher in the Okemah schools, the Dills loaded a Christmas tree into a wagon, hitched up a pair of mules and drove 14 miles through mud and sleet in order to give a Christmas party for families isolated on the Dill farm. The tree was the first decorated tree the tenant farm children had ever had. Mrs. Dill, who taught Sunday School for 30 years and was a Girl Scout leader for 20 years, instituted Sunday-school classes on her front porch for the children who were not able to go into town. The Dills lent helping hands to many youngsters--from motherless Buelah, the colored girl who had Martha hands and a Mary mind, whom they encouraged to finish college, to a boy with a college scholarship and no other means, whom they took into their home that he might continue his education. There was also an orphaned boy and girl whose care they assumed for many years. Mrs. Dill was forced last year to resign as county librarian after eight years of telling stories to all the youngsters in the county. Now they all come to her home, f-5 5, F . if TWT' X Ki V Y . - J iff' MRS. By Glenn and Beatrice Dill Looking back o'er the dimming track of the Road of Long Ago, we have crowded memories of forty years ago in Okemah High School where we first met. Those were the days of long curls, heavily starched cotton clothing, ribbons, and laces, thickly pleated basketball bloomers, large hats with vicious swordlike hatpins, and sailor style skirted bathing suits with long black stockings for swimming in the pond, High School girls did not know of rouge or powder, and lady teachers wore wire rats in their hair, Okemah High School desks had ink wells which were used extensively by boys for dunking the curls or braids of girls in the seat ahead. These memories are pushed aside, however, by more important ones---the inspirational ideals which our teachers tried to imbed in our hearts: 1. Hitch your wagon to a star' and dream, for all progress is a result of dreams. 2. Life is a matter of knowing what to select and what to ignore. We don't have time foreverything, so we should choose that which will count most for ourselves and others in the future. 3. We pass through this world but once, so we must not neglect to show kindness and consideration to all. 4. It is better to make a mistake trying to so something than to make a mistake of doing nothing. 5. It was not intended for us to live without working. 6. We are each weaving a tapestry, and the daily weaving is making or marring our life's pattem--We must keep our tapestry clean. 7. Each of us is like a pebble dropped into a lake making an ever widening circle, If we live right, the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow will be filled with golden memories. BEATRICE Du.L We graduated from O. H. S. believing in ourselves and feeling that Serving is Success. 'These ideals must have caused us to live in a way to be named 'The Christmas Family of 1953. We know there is no present without its past ---- Our past is full of golden memories. giilid lX'l!':4.
