FRANCES HOUSE DEITER DEDICATION How do you say that someone has stimulated your mind and imagination, freeing your captive thoughts; that someone has breathed the breath of life into cold facts, causing them to live for you in a complicated, confused world. How do you say these things without belittling them and stripping them of their beauty? Perhaps Thoreau has expressed it best in this excerpt from his Journal: “As I come over the hill, I hear the wood thrush singing in his evening lay. This is the only bird whose note affects me like music, affects the flow and tenor of my thought, my fancy, my imagination. It lifts me and exhilarates me. It is inspiring . . . Most other birds sing from the level of my ordinary cheerful hours — a carol; but this bird never fails to speak to me out of an ether purer than that I breathe, of immortal beauty and vigor. He deepens the significance of all things seen in the light of his strain. He sings to make men take higher and truer view of things.” 4

FOREWORD What is Senior High School? It is a large yellow brick building located , the comer of Graff and Spring Streets. It has five floors, with a ground-level entrance on each. It was built in 1932 with an addition in 1939, and it will be replaced in 1967 because the size and facilities are no longer adequate for a senior high school. But Senior High is something more than this — something far less tangible. It cannot be described as a thing, but rather as a time. It is a time for education — the gaining of knowledge of our world and its problems; a time for experience — students working together as responsible individuals; a time for enrichment — the creation of well-founded personalities through athletics, clubs, and music; a time for growth of character — the cultivation of pride in an All-America school in an All-America city. To twelve hundred students each year, Senior High is a time for everything that is youth.
