Text from Pages 1 - 200 of the 1965 volume:

OIL CAN - 1965 T o every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: 2 A time to be bom, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; 3 A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; 4 A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; 5 A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to re-frain from embracing; 6 A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; 7 A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; 8 A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace. 9 What profit hath he that worketh in that wherein he laboureth? 10 I have seen the travail, which God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised in it. Ecclesiastes 3:1-10. 2 OIL CITY HIGH SCHOOL, OIL CITY, PA. “A time to tear down . . ! 3 FRANCES HOUSE DEITER DEDICATION How do you say that someone has stimulated your mind and imagination, freeing your captive thoughts; that someone has breathed the breath of life into cold facts, causing them to live for you in a complicated, confused world. How do you say these things without belittling them and stripping them of their beauty? Perhaps Thoreau has expressed it best in this excerpt from his Journal: “As I come over the hill, I hear the wood thrush singing in his evening lay. This is the only bird whose note affects me like music, affects the flow and tenor of my thought, my fancy, my imagination. It lifts me and exhilarates me. It is inspiring . . . Most other birds sing from the level of my ordinary cheerful hours — a carol; but this bird never fails to speak to me out of an ether purer than that I breathe, of immortal beauty and vigor. He deepens the significance of all things seen in the light of his strain. He sings to make men take higher and truer view of things.” 4 FOREWORD What is Senior High School? It is a large yellow brick building located , the comer of Graff and Spring Streets. It has five floors, with a ground-level entrance on each. It was built in 1932 with an addition in 1939, and it will be replaced in 1967 because the size and facilities are no longer adequate for a senior high school. But Senior High is something more than this — something far less tangible. It cannot be described as a thing, but rather as a time. It is a time for education — the gaining of knowledge of our world and its problems; a time for experience — students working together as responsible individuals; a time for enrichment — the creation of well-founded personalities through athletics, clubs, and music; a time for growth of character — the cultivation of pride in an All-America school in an All-America city. To twelve hundred students each year, Senior High is a time for everything that is youth. Virgil Crumbling Dr. Crumbling works on plans for the new school. Dr. H. Virgil Grumbling has been Superintendent of Schools in Oil City since 1946. During his nineteen years as chief school administrator, he has provided us with the vital educational leadership necessary for the functioning of our school system. His job entails many duties such as helping to determine school policy, planning curriculum, regulating supplies and transportation, and selecting and supervising personnel. This is Dr. Grumbling’s thirty-fifth year in various areas of education. During this time he has held the positions of teacher, principal, supervising principal, and assistant county superintendent. We, the Class of 1965, wish to extend our thanks and congratulations to Dr. Grumbling for these many years of distinguished service. Charles Crawford Orrin £. Hilton ADVISORY BOARD Dale B. Goodwill Secretary of Oil City' Schools Cyrus T. Rynd Frank M. Short' Merwin E. Tarr John E. Weaver Charles S. Webber 17 PRINCIPAL John O. Kaufman Principal Having a close relationship with the students is a major part of Mr. Kaufman's profession. Mr. John O. Kaufman became principal at O.C.H.S. in 1963. He accepted the position after serving five years as Director of Secondary Curriculum. Mr. Kaufman told us that he finds his present job fascinating. There are so many different people and situations that I am constantly faced with new challenges,” he said. Our principal believes it is important to aim for a high goal. “We want each student to get the best possible education,” he continued. “We ask for no more and no less. Achieving this requires the help of the faculty, the parents, and the students themselves. 1 have been very pleased with the co-operation I have received from everybody.” 18 James D. Schwab, Assistant Principal ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Mr. Schwab, our assistant principal, is a jack-of-all-trades. He is in charge of not only the attendance and the many records involved but also the disciplinary needs of Senior. He directs the stage crew and must be present for all evening uses of the auditorium. Out of school Mr. Schwab likes to spend his spare time hunting, reading, or working around his home. He is a native of Oil City and was graduated from Cranberry High School. He received his B.S. degree at Clarion and his Master's at the University of Pittsburgh. Mr. Schwab works at his task of keeping attendance records. 19 SPECIAL SERVICES Last year the Oil Can editors felt that finding one's path in life was so important that they made it the theme of the yearbook. We also feel that this is the most important job of a high school student and would here like to give special thanks to the guidance directors of O.C.H.S. for helping us in this task. Filling out guidance forms is Many a puzzled senior is greeted by Mr. Pringle, part of Mr. Shoup's job. Mrs. Amsdell, home and school visitor, checks attendance records. 20 The occupation file receives Mrs. Daubcnspcck's attention. Whether it be a reference book for English class or a book just for enjoyment, one can always find it in our library. Under the watchful supervision of Mrs. Daubenspeck and Mrs. Walz, the library is adequately supplied with the most up-to-date books, magazines, and newspapers. A great variety of recordings is also available to the students. Assisting the two head librarians are sophomore, junior, and senior girls chosen for work in their freshman year by their teachers. Special education students are given individual attention and training by Mr. Zerbe to prepare them for meeting the obstacles usually confronting people in daily life. Mrs. Walz files new book cards. 21 ENGLISH Francis Bacon said, “Reading maketh a full man, conference a ready man, and writing an exact man.” It is to this end that our English department places emphasis on literature, book reviewing, and composition. The department offers courses in academic, business, general, and vocational English, with an enriched course for the students desiring more challenging study. These divisions offer excellent opportunity for those who plan to continue their education as well as those who do not. Mrs. Tniby refers to Warriner’s Handbook. Mrs. Deiter introduces The Raven” to her English class. Mrs. Riehl is intrigued by a student’s unusual interpretation. Mrs. Bankson stresses correct pronunciation 22 Mrs. Johnson illustrates the form for a good speech. 23 MATHEMATICS In working his way up the mathematical ladder at Senior High, a college preparatory student normally encounters Plane and Unified Geometry, two or three years of the extensive algebra course, and one year of trigonometry. Tile commercial students face the business world with a firm background in math supplied by the business mathematics offered at Senior. Mr. Porter — “Are you kiddin me?” Mr. Webster smiles at his little monsters.' 24 Mrs. Wilsted solves linear equations. 25 Mr. Allen, our candidate for President, contemplates the world situation. Mrs. McCash enjoys teaching history. Mr. Flath - •Whoa! HISTORY AND SOCIAL STUDIES “In order for man to know where he is going, he must know where he has been. This can be aptly applied to the study of history. First the cultures of different civilizations were studied. United States History consists of the detailed study of the development of the United States from a struggling colony to a world power. In P.O.D. we were made aware of elections, economics, and world problems were presented. The history department encouraged the student to analyze the past and to understand the present. Good morning, Mr. Pierce. 27 SCIENCE AND HEALTH Mr. Darcies instructs students in formula making. OCHS offers its students a general science course, two years of biology, one year of chemistry, and one year of physics. The annual science fair has been successful in stimulating interest in research and experimentation. Personality problems, the dangers of alcohol and narcotics, and ways to avoid accidents are some of the useful things all students leant in tenth grade health classes. Mr. Russell is on his way to health class. 29 PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND HIGHWAY SAFETY OCHS is doing its best to keep its youth physically fit. Each student is required to spend two periods a week playing various games, tumbling, or doing exercises to improve muscles and balance. Fitness tests are administered by the instructors each fall and spring. Statistics prove that drivers who take a training course in school have fewer accidents than those who don’t. Therefore, Senior requires that each student take a classroom course in highway safety, and also offers a driver’s training program to anyone who wants it. The program has been so popular that a year ago a second student driving car was purchased. Three cheers for the coach of the Section two Champs! Mr. Lynch gives tips on buying a used car. Mr. Enos explains rules for crab soccer. Miss Martens, cheerleading coach and gym teacher. Mr. Houtz on his way to his classroom on wheels. Miss Hickman intercepts a note in Spanish. Language plays an important role in a world that is continually growing smaller. At Senior the languages Latin, French, and Spanish are offered. Latin provides a firm background not only for many modem romance languages, but also for English. The teachers of French and Spanish emphasize the importance of vocabulary, grammar, and fluency in speaking. In addition, courses in special reading may be taken from Mrs. Barnette. Students needing help in comprehension, word attack, and study habits are given assistance until they reach their grade-level in reading. College bound students can improve speed of comprehension, note taking, and listening skills through other courses offered by Mrs. Barnette. Mrs. Skinner conjugates a Latin verb. Mrs. Bamette administers a reading test. 31 FINE ARTS The Fine Arts program at Senior consists of the Music and Art Departments. While helping some students who wish to pursue careers in these fields, it strives mainly to broaden the education and artistic appreciation of its members. Mr. Runzo with the A Cappella. Mr. Applequist — What in heaven’s name is that?” 32 Mistakes never slip by Mr. Mohr. COMMERCIAL The Commercial Department of Oil City Senior High offers many opportunities to students who wish to pursue a career in the world of business. The curriculum of the department includes typing, shorthand, and secretarial practice. Each year a number of students descend from the halls of Senior High to try their hand as employees in downtown offices. This program not only enables the student to gain experience, but also provides him with a knowledge of a particular field. (icncral Business problems are clarified by Mrs. Aimes. Miss Bell dictates. Mr. Snyder assigns problems to be put on the board. Miss Pifer gives a three minute timing. Mr. Heasly explains the workings of a carburetor. Mr. Banyas welds. VOCATIONAL Senior’s Vocational Department is divided into four sections: Welding Shop, Machine Shops I and II, and Auto Shop. Students enrolled in these courses spend three weeks of each six week period in shop training for a particular trade. The remaining three weeks are spent in the study of English, mathematics, and sciences. Mr. Jakubowski demonstrates the operation of the surface grinder. 34 Mr. Matha reviews the machine shop's safety precautions. Mr. Ziegler lectures on the Post-Revolutionary Period. HOMEMAKING Yes, those luscious odors of homemade bread are coming from the home economics room. In addition to cooking, the home economies department teaches home nursing, interior decorating, and sewing skills. The vocational homemaking course is more specialized and prepares the girls for jobs after graduation. The Home Economics Department helps the girl of today become the woman of tomorrow. Under the direction of Miss Reid and Mrs. Riehl, both negative and affirmative members of the debate teams worked to make their points of view on the topic the most effective and convincing. The club, which was the largest debating group in the history of Senior, met with various teams from neighboring schools to contest on the subject of disarmament. Club officers were Bruce Rodgers, president; Bill McClintic, vice president; Mary Kay Marshall, secretary; David Hotchkiss, corresponding secretary; and Chris Strohm, treasurer. This year eight boys were chosen by Mr. Kaufman as honorary Rotarians. Every Monday the Rotarian of the month ate lunch with the Rotary Club, making a speech on his last day. The newscasters spoke about the school’s activities and interviewed student personalities on the air. “Your attention, your attention please.” Every day voices invaded all O.C.H.S. homerooms announcing the news and events of the day. This year the voices belonged to Vic Bowser and Gary Jones. 56 SENIOR HIGH NEWS Approximately once a month the journalism class, under the direction of Mr. Masters, produced an issue of our Senior High News. Every class member was given an assignment and deadline for the completion of his assignment. Mr. Mohr served as the business advisor for the paper and Mr. Masters served as editorial advisor. As editor, Vic Bowser was responsible for compiling the work of the class. Other editors included JoAnn Shirey, feature editor; Fran Swetsky, copy editor; Kathy Len-drum, page editor; Dennis Harkless, sports editor; Bill Muldoon, art editor; and Randy Manley, business manager. The officers were Michele Leta, president; Sheri Young, vice-president; Susan Pfendler, secretary; and Mike Rose, treasurer. One of their major projects was having Junior Shields work at the hospital. After specific training, about thirty-five girls per week worked in different wards throughout the hospital. Two of their duties were to entertain the patients and to help serve the meals. Many hours of service were donated by club members. This club contributed to the community in addition to serving the school. Linda Freeman and Nancy Heckathome entertain patients in the Pediatrics Ward. Working under the supervision of Mr. Swaile were four experienced boys: Cody Smith, Bill Strouse, Glenn Fox, and Tom Mohnkem. By showing the movies the boys not only helped in making subjects more interesting for the students, but also gained technical knowledge for themselves. MYSTERY PLAY An Oil City audience spent an evening of thrills and shocks, February 12, when sophomores, juniors, and seniors joined forces to present the all-school mystery play, Widow’s Walk. Directed by Warren Anna, with Sue Baugher as student director, the play featured a cast of mysterious characters. Memorable performances were given by Jill Levine as a sharp, crusty old lady, Gary Lake as the snoopy young writer trying to get a story from the events on Widow’s Walk, Debbie Holt as his girlfriend, and — at last it can be revealed — Dick Houtz as the Phantom Fisherman. Vic Bowser’s creative set design and Gary Jones’ realistic sound effects made a large contribution to the mood of the play. No play is successful without behind-the-scenes help. Bryan Levine was in charge of lighting, Gary Jones operated the sound effects, Donna Wynkoop and Susan Hewey acted as prompters, and Chris Roess and Beverly Whitehill were in charge of props. Gary Lake demands an explanation from Jill Levine as Melissa Mohr watches in silence. Front How: Jill Levine, Bill Kay, Gary Lake, Debbie Holt. SENIOR CLASS PLAY Take Her, She’s Mine transported its audience from a West Coast living room to a girls’ dorm in the East to the Sleeping Pill, a beatnik coffeehouse. This year’s senior class play was unique in that it had fourteen different settings. It followed Mollie Michaelson, portrayed by Elaine Mullins, through her first two years of college and all her crazy phases. The most humorous element of the play was a reaction of Mollies father, played by Lee Strickland, to the changes in his daughter over the months when she is at school. A full house turned out to see the twenty members of the cast in this November play. After starting the season slowly, the Oilers picked up momentum, dribbling and shooting their way to the second place spot in Section Two Competition. Graduating seniors, John Downing, Terry Ray, Earl Stoltenberg, and Bill Wright, did a tremendous job in their last year’s effort, while Ron McCoid and Gary Leicht will see action again next year. The performance of the Junior Varsity team this year, producing the best record in the history of O.C.H.S., indicates that the future Oiler team may surpass many other records. VARSITY LETTERS! Try-outs are held annually, and twelve girls are chosen on the basis of ability, grades, and personality. The girls are later divided into a Varsity and Junior Varsity squad, according to skill. To be allowed to cheer, the girls must maintain a good academic standing. Besides leading cheers at pep meetings and games, the girls make up new cheers and make signs for the lunch hall and auditorium in hope of getting even more students out to the games. At the sale’s conclusion, it was noted that more season passes were sold this year than in any other year in the schools history. Another activity of the Junior Class was a magazine sale in February. As always, it generated keen competition among the junior home rooms to see who would sell the most subscriptions. In the spring these future seniors paid tribute to this year’s graduation class by planning and making all the decorations for the Senior Prom. All these projects were accomplished under the leadership of Mr. Lafferty, class advisor, and the class officers: Chuck Harvey, president; Mary Kay Marshall, vice-president; Diane Carnahan, secretary; and Dan Bruner, treasurer. In the preceeding pages we have attempted to show why Senior High is a time for everything. We hope that we have achieved this goal. We should like to thank our photographers, the Petullas, and our advisors, Mrs. Samonsky and Miss Bell, whose assistance and counsel made this ’65 Oil Can possible. With the completion of the yearbook comes the completion of our education at Senior High. It is the end of a phase of our lives. But out of this end comes a beginning, a time to build — a time to build our future. 192 •nTwiitr va' .-tvT -.t 7‘; jil IS:.¥V ATv-l v a. X- .Vse :c..'7 - V- £rT£. u
