Freedom to choose is our birthright. No one dictates the path we must follow. THE ROAD NOT TAKEN Two roods diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair. And having perhaps the better claim. Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same. And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by. And that has made all the difference. by Robert Frost From Complete Poems Of Robert Frost, Copyright 1916, 1921 by Holt, Rinehart, and Winston, Inc. Copyright renewed 1944 by Robert Frost. One of our basic freedoms is our right to choose our own way through life, and our decisions must start in high school. We begin by choosing the course which will best suit our life's goals. Next, we decide which of the offered courses we will take. After graduation, some of us choose to continue our education, others enter the jobs of their choice. Whether our goals be those of scientists or mechanics, teachers or homemakers, businessmen, or lawyers, the choice is our road in life, and the choice must be made by each of us. Through life we shall be faced with an unending number of decisions. By necessity many roads will be left untaken and many adventures untried. 4 CONTENTS FACULTY 14- 31 CLASSES 32- 85 ACTIVITIES 86-115 MUSIC AND DRAMA 116-129 ROYALTY 130-139 ATHLETICS 140-157 SENIOR INDEX 158-167 Biology offers the opportunity for students to probe into the mysteries of life. ACADEMIC- GENERAL Some of the pleasures of oncient Rome ore investigated by Advanced Latin students. Quantity is not alwoys necessary for quality. Eleven students made up this year's Advanced Algebra ill class. 6 The academic and general courses are designed for college-bound students. From select classes like Algebra III and Trigonometry to compulsory classes like P.O.D. and English, the curriculum helps to develop the student's power of reasoning and his ability to express his thoughts clearly and concisely. Students leorn the mechanics of our American society and discuss current events in P.O.D. class. 7 COMMERCIAL Necessory experience is goined by using the modern equipment in the Commercial Deportment. The commercial courses are for students who intend to enter the competitive world of business. Speed and efficiency are always demanded there, and the road to success is long and hard. Secretaries, businessmen, clerks, office workers—all of these professions and many more can be attained through subjects offered in this course. Often mistakes ore found in a student's ledger by an attentive teacher. Future secretaries improve their shorthand by practicing as a group. 9 The boys' vocational courses prepare students for jobs after high school, whether they choose to be mechanics, welders, or industrial workers. Only in the Home Economics Department do girls find special training for most women's future vocation, homemaking. Here they learn how to prepare and serve foods, domestic and foreign. The girls are taught to design and make hats, cut, fit, and tailor clothes. They also are exposed to such fields as reupholstering furniture, home nursing, grooming, and family relationships. VOCATIONAL The Home Economics Department teoches its students procticol skills such os hatmaking. Blueprinting is an ort which con be perfected only through hours of practice. Everyone takes physical fitness tests. There are some things that all the students do. For example: they participate in sports, as athletes and spectators; they stand impatiently in lunch lines; they all must take health, physical and safety education; and they all enjoy the assemblies. WHAT WE DO TOGETHER 13 EDUCATORS e u 1 5 ADMINISTRATION Able Leaders Determine Our School s Policies Dr. H. Virgil Grumbling Dr. H. Virgil Grumbling has been in the field of education for thirty-four years serving as a teacher, principal, supervising principal, and superintendent. For the past eighteen years he has been Superintendent of the Oil City Area Schools. Dr. Grumbling attended Indiana State College, Waynesburg College, and the University of Pittsburgh. He has Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctor's degrees in education. Many thanks are due to Dr. Grumbling for his work with the School Board and his active interest in student affairs. DR. H. Kaufman, principal, came to Oil City in the fall of 1948. His first teaching and coaching were done in Somerset County during 1940-42. He spent the following four years in the armed forces and then returned to his chosen profession for two years in Evans City before coming to Oil City. During his teaching career he has taught health, driver safety, physical education, biology, and science. Since Mr. Kaufman came to the Oil City Public Schools, he has served as the Director of Health ond Physical Education and as Athletic Director. He was head football and track coach for ten years. Mr. Koufman wos the Director of Secondary Curriculum from 1958-1963 and assumed the principalship this year Mr. James D. Schwab began teaching at West Hickory in 1950. He joined the Cranberry faculty where he taught both grade school and high school. During his nine years there he also served as the Elementary Supervisor. His first job in Oil City was guidance counselor at South Side Junior High School. He served in that capacity for three years before becoming Assistant Principal at Senior this year. JOHN O. REINHARDT General Business, Guidance DEAN K. SHOUP Guidance The teachers of the Guidance Deportment are a very important part of the Oil City faculty. By administering specially prepared tests they learn essential facts about each student. They arrange personal interviews with every student to help with such important things as scheduling classes, taking College Boards, and filling out college applications. Whatever the problem may be, the teochers of the Guidance Department are always ready to lend a helping hand. Mrs. Reinhardt discusses Judy Harris' future plans with her. Mr. Pringle studies a student's guidance folder. A Thorough Knowledge of English Is a Necessity for Further Learning ENGLISH The English teachers of Senior High teach their students much more than ports of speech and punctuation. One of their main objectives, teaching the art of good composition, is studied by analyzing the techniques of established writers, by learning the fundamentals of the skill and, finally, by triol and error. Developing poise in speaking before an audience is another goal aimed for by giving oral book reports and class discussions. The English department's curriculum is planned to give adequate preparation for the student whose formal education ends with high school and also for the student who goes on to further his education. This year the library has seen the addition of new book shelves in the conference room, book classification tabs, magazine files, newspaper racks, and an organized record department. They supervise the training of new student librarians, the buying of new books, and the binding of old books for the Oil City Area Schools. LIBRARIANS Books Are a Key to Knowledge LEANNA C. BECK Problems of Democracy History Mr. Allen draws a map of South America for his P.O.D. class. The histories — U. S. History, World History, World Cultures, Civics, and P.O.D.—all help us to understand whot has happened ond whot is happening in the world around us. From the cavemen ond Caesar of Rome to radar and nuclear warheads, students at Senior are instructed in the why's and wherefore's of the events which make the world the woy it is. Sometimes the method used for this instruction is new, such os the television teacher observed in some of the world culture classes, but usually our teachers succeed in guiding us through the chapters of history. Without the Social Studies classes of Senior, our awareness of the world would be diminished; ond, as the future leaders of Americo, we would lack necessary knowledge. MARGIE L. Here at Senior, French, Spanish, and Latin are offered. Emphasis placed on fluent conversation in these languages dominated the courses, especially in French and Spanish classes, with grammar studied only when it was necessary in order to speak the language correctly. During the first year students leorn the fundamentals of the language so that they will be prepared for conversational fluency in their second year. SPECIAL READING The Goal-to Overcome Reading Deficiencies REBECCA SKINNER Latin BRUCE McFALL French, Spanish Mrs. Skinner prepares her daily Latin lesson. A special course in reading improvement is fought by Mrs. Helen Barnette in the moke-up room behind the study hall. The course is designed to help students who have certain deficiencies in reading. A series of tests is given to each student to help determine the scope of his reading problems. Then the student begins working on the specific phoses of reading in which he showed weaknesses on the tests. HELEN BARNETTE Remedial Reading JO ANN MATEJCZYK Spanish Mrs. Barnette gives a timed reading test to Stephan Dalber and Jim Russell. COMMERCIAL The Ever Important World of Business The curriculum of the Business Deportment consists mainly of typing, shorthand, and secretarial practice. Students gain information and experience which will help them to become qualified secretaries. The classes are conducted like offices to give the students a sample of what the business world is like. Further experience is acquired during the student's training period at downtown offices. EDITH M. BELL Shorthand Advanced Arithmetic Bookkeeping GEORGE E. HOMEMAKING Reading, 'Riting, and 'Rithmetic aren't the only subjects available at Senior High. A girl needs to know how to become a successful homemaker no matter what other plans she might have for her later life. The Home Economics Department, under the supervision of Mrs. Mead, offers a choice of Academic, Vocational, and General homemoking. All of these courses provide an excellent opportunity for gaining varied experience in this field. For example, the Senior Vocational students are given a week's training in business establishments, hospitals, nursing homes, and homes where specifically trained help is required. Even in grade school she showed her ability to sing and dance up a storm in oil the musicals. In later years she displayed her talents in the OCHS music groups and was chosen for Girls' Ensemble. She also proved to be a leader when she was elected Girls' Chorus president. Red Cross Representative in her Senior year, and home room president in her Sophomore year. Sharon's potential to go far is illustrated by her desire to be an airline hostess after obtaining her two-year associate degree in college. Kothy received her L ot Lincoln and loter advanced to cheering os a Northside cheerleader, finally becoming o member of Senior High Varsity Squad. From on L to on N to on 0 were Kathy's ABC's. She proved that she con use her voice in other ways than for cheerleading when she was chosen for Girls' Ensemble. Her variable personality is confirmed by the fact that some know her to be seriously dedicated to the eventual goal of teaching hearing-handicapped children, while others know her as a lovable kook who likes pizza better than any other food. SHARON DEPEW Linda's leadership ond academic ability make her outstanding in her class. Her musicol interests come to light in Girls' Choir where she served os president, ond in A Coppello. She also served os on OCHS majorette. Being selected as a member of the Notionol Honor Society and as the recipient of the D.A.R. Award proved that her character is commendable. She hos served as a student librarian and has been on Student Council. In Debate Club Linda has held the offices of secretary and president. Linda has served her school well in many fields during her four years at Senior High. 64 DAVID PEARSON Dave stands out not only in height but in personality, too. In basketball and football he has won mony honors for himself and his school. He puts his leadership qualities to good use by serving as president of Varsity Club and Teen Inn Board. In Junior High he was Prom King and in his senior year he served as on escort at the-Harvest Ball. Dave will always be remembered as one of the most good-natured boys at OCHS. CHARLES VENTURELLA One of the most rugged individualists at Senior, Chuck hos been accused of being girl-shy. He is not one to follow the crowd if he feels that his ideas are better. He has been outstanding at wrestling, and in football he has been chosen twice to the All Section II first team. In contrast to the intense excitement of football, Chuck often enjoys being alone to read or to listen to music. He is one of the top ten scholastically and a member of the National Honor Society. Because of his quality of leadership, he was elected vice-president of Student Council. Chuck also participtaes in Chemistry Club and in Varsity Club. Ted was quarterbock on the football team for three years, and a star bosketball player. He was olso selected to Section II first team in twelfth grade. He is a member of the track team and Varsity Club. Ted was twice Junior High Prom King and was an escort for the Harvest Boll in his senior year. He is one of the most easygoing boys at Senior. The courage of life is often o less dramatic spectacle than the courage of a final moment; but it is no less than a magnificent mixture of triumph and tragedy. A man does what he must—in spite of personal consequences, in spite of obstacles and dangers and pressures— and that is the basis of all human morality. —John F. Kennedy Ask What You Can Do for Your Fellow Man We here at Senior were especially touched by the deaths of two men this past year. Both John F. Kennedy and Russell Daum have affected our educational lives, although in different ways. Mr. Kennedy, our late President, had great interest in the youth and education of our nation. He often stressed the fact that education was the backbone of the United States. Our past director of elementary education, Mr. Daum, planned and affected our pre-high school training and had a special interest and joy in working with retorded and handicapped children. As different as the backgrounds and duties of these two men were, devotion to education was their common ground. It is regrettable that we cannot express our appreciation to these men for their work in our behalf, but it is altogether fitting that we acknowldege their memories and pray that the future leaders of our school and country will, as John F. Kennedy and Russell Daum have done, moke this world a better one in which to live. 85 ACTIVITIES 86 87 Their Goal Is Always Improvement of Our School Under the able leadership of the officers, Al Ward, Chuck Venturella, Sandy Williams, Garry Leicht, and advisor, Mr. McFall, much was done for the benefit of the student body. Representatives were chosen in each home room for the ensuing year. Besides selling refreshments at the football games, this organization provides ushers for community concerts and school plays, conducts elections of class and student council officers, furnishes pep buses to football games, and prints the athletic schedule cards for the students. As a climax to their activities, they award a scholarship at Commencement to some student on the basis of need and achievement.
