Text from Pages 1 - 152 of the 1963 volume:

I IM I IN! WHAT IS SENIOR HIGH? We all love Senior dearly, But, what is it we really love? Bricks and mortar, paint and polish Activity-filled rooms and quiet corridors Sturdy enough to weather the storm of Students—gay, sorrowful, frustrated, elated, Reluctant or eager to meet the future Educators—dedicated, friendly, firm, Satisfying our endless quest for knowledge. Activities—numerous and varied Selected to supplement and lessen The monotony of everyday routine Athletics—exciting, competitive, Demanding teamwork, perseverance, training. And from both participant and spectator Loyalty and sportsmanship. And as the years slip by Memories—some pleasant, some unpleasant Forming a lasting impression on our minds. These—the answers to our question WHAT IS SENIOR HIGH? The question—our theme for 1963. 5 Like Sam Krug who sometimes burn the midnight oil to a point of exhaustion. But still find time for relaxation with the crowd. Like Lee Vandal, Peggy Sayers (front), Ken Winger, and Donna Sylvester (back), who honor our nation and school. In the National Honor Society for those who have shown outstanding qualities of scholarship, leadership, character and service. Carol Schwabenbauer taps Jerry Rankin. 8 In making our prom a most pleasurable evening. Cathy Rose is helped over the bridge by Mike Crawford, while Connie Snyder is aided by Tex Pfendler. In leading our assemblies with devotions. Patric Folwell assumes this duty. 9 Where we learn the value of individual accomplishment. Mr. Urban looks on while Jim Shaughnessy receives congratulations from Mr. Flath. Where we experience the joy of winning. Players rejoice in the locker room after the Franklin victory. Who welcome a noon day break with colleagues. and test and test and teach Requires many hours of extra work. Miss Leyda has found this to be true. 13 Reliable Overseers ADMINISTRATION Dr. H. Virgil Grumbling Superintendent of Schools Dr. H. Virgil Grumbling, now in his seventeenth year as superintendent of the Oil City Area Schools, has served our community well. Having attended Indiana State College, Waynesburg College, and the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Grumbling holds a Bachelors, Masters and Doctors Degree in Education. We, the Senior Class of 1963, wish to extend to you. Dr. Grumbling, our most sincere thanks for what you have done for us. Dr. H. Virgil Grumbling BOARD OF EDUCATION Howard R. Fisher William L. Townsend, who is retiring on July 1, has completed forty-two years of service in the educational field. For the past twenty years, he has been principal of Senior. In this capacity he has been called upon to solve many problems—some major, some minor. Each was solved intelligently, fairly, and with the individual's welfare uppermost in his mind. We as students cannot comprehend the magnitude of his position, which has demanded so much of himself. May he find compensation in the following words of Emerson. The reward of a job well done is to have done it. A favorite postime. Mr. Townsend proudly displays his catch to grandsons, Michael and Mark. Mr. Townsend was interested in our many activities. He is pictured during the opening exercises of a football game. With him are Mrs. Townsend and their grandsons. Mr. Carl H. Townsend 16 RETIRING TEACHERS Mr. James D. Townley Assistant Principal for the past twenty years is retiring after thirty-nine years of service. At the attendance desk. One of the ways we shall remember Mr. Townley. To raise the thought and touch the heart be thine. We believe that each of these men and women who is now retiring has made Pope's words a reality. These teachers have dedicated a lifetime to the young people, and their contributions are immeasurable. We seldom appreciate their efforts at the time, but we hope the final success of our lives will compensate for their many sacrifices. Dedicated Teachers End Careers of Service RETIRING TEACHERS. Walz Assistant Librarian SPECIAL SERVICES The time and effort given to us by our guidance counselors are seldom appreciated when they are given. Mrs. Gill and Mr. Pringle held individual consultations and gave tests throughout the year to help determine our greatest interests. Mrs. Walz and Mrs. Daubenspeck headed our library and kept it running efficiently. Miss Lamey's objective as our home and school visitor was to advise the troubled student, and help develop healthy mental attitudes in school. 18 Special services offer us a foundation on which to build a future. BUSINESS EDUCATION The modern business world of today calls for accuracy and speed. In the business education classes, the main objective is preparing the student for a beginning job. In addition, emphasis is given to the development of the traits of adaptability, initiative, and willingness to improve. Secretarial and clerical students have the opportunity to work in various places of business for two weeks each spring. Unaware of the amount of used tope, Connie Evans and Jim Putnam busily work on their office machines assignment. King-size slide-rules are used to solve king-size problems. SCIENCE The Science Department offers biology, advanced biology, physics, chemistry, physical science, senior science, and related science. These courses are designed to inform the students about the principles of science in everyday life as well as to prepare them for advanced education or future careers. There are science courses offered for every type of education. 21 Robert C. Allen Problems of Democracy Vance D. Brown Civics, Arithmetic Robert L. Flath U. S. and World History Henrietta leyda U. S. SOCIAL STUDIES The study of history, geography, and world cultures helped us to realize how far the world and its people have come since the beginning of time. In American history, the students became acquainted with the five W's. World cultures brought out the fine arts of this great planet. All these studies helped us to understand the present world situations and our problems of democracy. 22 Art Transmits the Best Feelings of Men A course in art is a required subject for all of the junior high students but is an elective for the senior high students. Units studied in the elective art classes include architecture, drawing, painting, coloring, designing, sculpturing, and crafts. The pupils may be interested in art either as a hobby or a career. FINE ARTS Mr. Runzo conducts a final rehearsal before an assembly. Pat Michaelson and Lee Vandall operate a printing press in advanced art class. James Terrill, Vikki Schultz, and Carol Baker prepare linoleum blocks. 'Who climbs the grammar-tree knows where Your time' almost up, cautions Mrs. Caldwell (center). Jill Samonsky patiently waits for Bruce Rosen to finish his book report. LANGUAGES A study of languages gave students a well balanced program of grammar, literature, and composition. Mrs. Skinner's Latin classes studied background and grammar and also read many pieces of literature. In English class pupils studied grammar as a background for more efficient speaking and writing. They read and discussed many selections of both traditional and recent literature. The Spanish classes, this year, worked on scrapbooks containing news of Spanish-speaking countries. A scale model of Paris, with its important and interesting places, was constructed by the French classes. Ruth R. In addition to specialized training, the boys take English, history, mathematics, science, blueprint reading, industrial arts, and physical education. Upon the successful completion of this course, a student is prepared for a job or may go on for further industrial schooling. Mr. Bonyas inspects the work of the students as they arc weld. Health is a Blessing Money Cannot Buy President Kennedy's physical fitness program stresses the great importance of health and physical education more than ever today. This program requires schools to have at least one hour of strenuous exercising once a week. Our school has had a similar plan for years. Driver education is equally important to our nation because of the increasing amount of automobile accidents each year. Valuable knowledge obtained from taking this course could very easily decrease this number. 28 An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. It attempts to provide a program in which each girl will have an opportunity to put into actual practice much of what she has learned in other classes. Top Six —Our Favorites TOP SIX In the fall of the year the traditional election for the most popular seniors was held. The honor of being chosen was bestowed upon six students with the most pleasing personalities. Members of both the junior and the senior classes participated in the election. SMARTEST—This isn't a case of strong back, weak mind. Robin Horne and Nancy Caldwell hold up their grades by using many books. SHYEST—Too shy to face each other, Gail Kulling and Doug Fox bashfully consume a bowl of popcorn. Excelled in Many Fields SENIOR SUPERLATIVES Certain outstanding characteristics of twelve seniors were not unnoticed by the members of our class. The superlatives were chosen by the seniors only. Each boy and girl was selected because he had been prominent in a certain category. The election was held in October. TOP SIX—Back Seat: Peggy Stewart, Dick Krug, Jane Jackson. Front Seat: Dave Myers, Sue Lindquist, Rick Montana. WITTIEST— I spy my cap. Ken O'Neil discovers Candy Paine, the culprit, who took his hat. PEPPIEST—A friendly game of tug of war is waged between Jane Jackson and Gene Harkless. SWELLEST— May I have your autograph? Fans crowd around Dick Krug and Sue Lindquist. 57 JUNIORS Juniors Eagerly Await Glory of Being Seniors JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS—Front Row: Joanne Strickland, secretary; Ethel Mong, vice president. The Oiler Club presented trophies to the outstanding back and lineman each week, thus inspiring the boys to play better. Selections for All Section team were Chuck Venturella, halfback, and Dick Krug, guard. Krug and Venturella sparked the season with brilliant plays, such as the offset huddle play in the Hickory game. Eloise Forshee takes advantage of these lessons. It takes a lot of hard work to get one hundred and nineteen voices to harmonize, as the members of this year's A Cappella know all too well. Under the direction of Mr. Runzo, the choir mastered and presented for concerts many types of music including religious selections, Negro spirituals, and novelty tunes. Since no organization can be successful without leaders, the following officers presided: David Myers, president; Susan Lindquist, secretary; Christine Gill, librarian; and Nancy Henderson, robe mistress. Section leaders were also elected. 113 GIRLS' ENSEMBLE— Front Row: Mr. Runzo, Carol Thomas, Edwina Coughlan, Connie Snyder, Don na Sylvester, Carol Whitehouse. The decorating committee, headed by Chris Gill and Rick Montana, worked diligently on the decorations which consisted of pumpkins, corn stalks, gourds, and a colorful scarecrow. At 10:15 there was a brief intermission followed by the crowning of the queen. Sue Lindquist. The queen and her court were chosen by the senior members of our football team who served as the escorts. They were as follows: Rick Montana, Dick Krug, Sam Krug, Bill Kribbs, Rowland Plowman, Dave Wilson, and Greg Williams. Music for dancing was provided by Phil Run-zo's band. Susan Lindquist - Harvest Ball Queen Winter Sports Dance Valentines and snowflakes decorated the V.W.C.A. gym for the annual Winter Sports Dance. Approximately 425 students were on hand to watch the coronation of Miss Peggy Sayers as the Winter Sports Queen. The queen and her court appeared through a large red valentine, which was placed in the center of the stage. They came through the doors of the heart and there met their escorts. Each girl was presented with a charm for the occasion and the queen received several gifts from the Oil City merchants. The queen was chosen by the senior class. This yearly event, held on May 3 in the auditorium, was one of the highlights of the year. Knowing it is every girls' wish to be on the Swing Out Court, the nine girls selected realized what an honor they had received. The girls were chosen by a vote of the members of the junior and senior classes. The girl receiving the largest number of votes was the queen. We realize that no book could ever record what Senior meant to each individual; but we have endeavored, through the use of pictures and words, to re-create some of the customary scenes in our school life. Senior has many different phases. Even though at times we may find it hard to admit, each one of us has acquired a love for one or all of them. Our school will remain in our hearts as the building in which we gathered with our friends to increase our small realm of knowledge and to develop within ourselves the poise and confidence needed to make us intelligent adults. To our fellow classmates we extend farewell and best wishes. We hope that the benefits received from the work which has been accomplished in their high school days will enable them to achieve their goals in life. Working on the Oil Can has taught us that reward and happiness will come only from perseverance and perfection. Also, we wish to thank our staffs for the service and time which they have given to the Oil Can. Without their co-operation and help, the deadline never would have been met. Now that they have seen the entire book, we believe that their satisfaction will be greater than their sacrifices. Most of all we wish to express to our advisers. Miss Bell and Mr. Allen, our gratitude. Their enthusiasm and devotion guided us throughout the year in everything we did. In future years, when we become scattered throughout the world, may the Oil Can be a pleasant reminder of Senior. —Jackie and Carol 1 44
