HE Senior Class play, Our Miss Brooks, will long be remembered by all members of '54 as one of the most hilarious comedies ever produced on Senior's stage. On November 19 and 20, seventeen seniors skillfully presented this play under the direction of F . LaMonte Lewis, and Marlene Snow and Carol Skrobat, student directors. The action of the play centered around the hectic life of Miss Brooks, an English teacher who was suddenly confronted with the problem of producing the annual school play and coping with the faculty and temperamental high school actors. Jeanne Runzo handled the lead as Miss Brooks, while Virgil Grumbling, Barb Swetsky, Leroy Rodgers, and Sonia Ward portrayed various faculty members, and Mary Ann Regan played the school board president and a haughty mother. Carol Paulie, Dodie Wattsjer, Dick Kohlman, Shirley I-Iill, Kay Rauscher, Beth Biery, Gretchen Morck, Saralane Zehrung, Barb Reynolds, Sam Widger and Axel Metschies played the parts of high school students whose humor and antics helped to make Our Miss Brooks a never-to-be forgotten OCHS production. i 76 . I - 3431 SHADOWS in the Night, the annual mystery play was presented February 18 and 19 under the direction of F. L. Lewis. The cast included Norma Flinchbaugh, john Wilkinson, Tom Miller, joan Bodner, Leroy Rodgers, William King, Diane Travis, Ann Butler, Dick Kohlman, John Knabb, Alice Archible, and Annella Adams. The night was dark and stormy when four hopeful heirs assembled at the old Barret mansion for the reading of Daniel Barret's will. Matters were con- fused by a gag writer and his friend, plus a movie queen and her humorous Negro maid, not to speak of a foreboding housekeeper, a tough bodyguard, and a howling idiot. The plot thickened when two mysterious murders occured and long hidden diamonds were found. The audience remained on the edge of their seats until the murders were solved, romances patched up, and the diamonds restored to their rightful ovsmer. L-95,4185 Eleanor Hoy's assistants in the library this year num- bered about forty. Their jobs varied from preparing new books for circulation, to lookingup magazines for fellow students, to dusting and straightening shelves. These girls were recommended to Miss Hoy at the end of their freshman year by their teachers. Sophomores serve three periods a week, doing general work one period, working at the desk one period, and working in the library manual once a week. junior and seniors spend two periods a week alternating between desk duty and general work. Students entering the library during the past two years have be- come acquainted with Mrs. Grace Vogus, who serves as Miss Hoy's assistant. Coach I-Iud Wells feels that this year's Oilers played their best ball in the second Cranberry game and their last contest of the year with Titusville. Fans will long remember the three tense overtime periods in the second game at Corry, which the Oilers finally won by one point. Five varsity players closed their high school court careers this season. They are Gerry Callahan, Dave Settlemire, Pete Burch, Matthew Hajduk, and john Gregory. Bob Petulla concluded two years work as team manager. 98 VN my ' X f?x 5 wi, K I Pg VARSITY WRESTLING LACK of experience was the main stumbling block for the OCHS wrestling squad of 1954, who turned in a record of one win, ten losses, and one tie. With only three seniors on the squad, the rest of the team of underclassmen had little or no previous experience, and sickness and minor injuries made it impossible to have a complete first team for any match. Taking this into consideration, Coach Blair Hildebrandfeels that he had a good team and prospects of a better season next year with most of the varsity returning. Senior letterman Lawrence Petulla went undefeated through the sea- son and successfully defended his District 10 championship in the 112 pound class. 101 C51 6 x gS9'qf9 Q9 James News NX, TE, If 1 ,I - 'B VW 1, 5-. 4 QJ I PAULXE X '? Their adviser was Hud Wells. n i F .O.C. COMMITTEE UK' HNCE again the F .O.C. committee worked with a similar council from Franklin High to promote friendly rivalry and good sportsmanship between the two schools. Events planned by this councillwere Spirit Day, our pep meeting with Franklin speakers, and the crowning of queen Carol Paulie and her attend- ant Flo McGreevy during the Franklin game. The committee under Chuck Carabell and Gretchen Morck successfully carried out their theme of Friendship Out Of Competition. Hn. --ni-'hh .1 I0lliH!3 l6l7l8l92O 52827 nl K CW E, the class of 1954, have added another milestone to the history of education in the Oil City Public schools, and we sincerely hope that our contribution to our school in the past four years was up to the ex- pectations of our parents, our teachers, and our school administrators. We began our Freshman year with little fanfare as we were the green ones. But as the year wore on we be- gan to take our part in the scheme of things and though separated, some of us at South and some of us at Senior, we began to develop that class unity which was to blend us into what we hoped would be a credit to O.C. H. S. Our Sophomore year found us together for the first time in the halls of Senior High. Here we were exposed to the many choices of academic education and extra-curricular activities for which our school is well renowned. Our Alma Mater took on new significance as we contributed our under-classmen share to the various school plays, musical activities, and sports. In our Junior year we experienced a wider scope of activities and accepted an accompanying degree of re- sponsibilities for the welfare of our school. We chose Mr. Goodwill as our advisor, and elected Jim Kistler, Carol Paulie, Beverly Lewis and Gerry Callahan as our class officers. Now we were really getting into the thick of things and knew that there was more to education than just the Three R's. It was up to us to contribute gener- ously to the activities that make ours the outstanding school that it is. We were happy to have sponsored the most successful magazine campaign of the school's history, and to be well represented in the music and dramatic programs. And then, all at once, we became the elder students of our school. lt was now our turn to set proper ex- amples. Our officers were Jim Kistler, Janet Hodge, Jane Evans and Don Dolecki. Miss Brooks was our Sen- ior Class play. Never before did we have to accept so much responsibility. Never before did we concentrate on leaving our mark, a creditable one, for posterity and for O.C. H. S. Faith have we --- School we love sowell became more than just words for another song. We who were once anxious to conclude our high school days, sud- denly were confronted with the nostalgic loss which was soon to become ours. Baccalaureate---Commencement ---THIS WAS IT. With an eye to the future, we will always remember a very happy and profitable past. Blue and White, thy colors will always fly, soaring upward to the sky. Thee we'll cherish evermore, as the years go by. iii 105 FRANK ADELSBERGER-- Buzz . . .likes the wide open spaces. . .Army career ahead.
