Q . ii 011th ff ir if if FOREWORD To every Senior his yearbook should be his most prized possession, holding for him in the years to come the memories of his high school days. But the many activities of an up-to-date high school must be presented in such a manner that they will live as memories when all other connections with the high school have gone by. With this thought in mind the editors of the 1940 Oil Can have chosen the novel theme of the producing and showing of motion pictures to portray the school life of the class of 1940. It must be rmembered that QVQCTSOIIS and plags depicted in thihook arc not fictitious, and any similarity to persons living or otherwise is purely inten- tional. C55 HERBERT C. COLEMAN 6 DEDI CATIO We would dedicate our 1940 edition of the Oil Can to the man who has Worked so untiringly and devotedly for the present class, and spent hours upon hours of precious time and effort not only for the betterment of the Class of 1940, but. for many other classes in the past. He has always been the same helpful, guiding light in the eyes of every one associated with him. With never a cross word, his criticisms have always been in a constructive form-and so with utmost appreciation for his fine work and with greatest respect for him, We take this means of partially repaying him by dedicating this 1940 Oil Can to Mr. Herbert C. During the year the members of the Student Council work hard to promote school activities and entertainment for the student body. Every Friday night during the football season whether it was cold or hot, rainy or clear the members of the Student Council labored diligently at the re- freshment stand to supply every one's needs. Through their tireless efforts they took in 3128 profit by selling candy, pop, and hot dogs. This money will go toward some practical use around school. Among other things that the Student Council did this year are the following projects: 1. Sponsoring student dances, 2. Sponsoring school movies, 3. Selling tickets for and ushering at plays and other social events, 4. Purchasing books for the Library, 5. Operating candy stand at the basketball games, 6. Purchasing two new flags for the school. The Club consisting of thirty members has given second year French students chance to glean more interesting material about France and the French language than may be had from a mere textbook. The singing of delightful songs occupied much of the time at these meetings. Among these familiar melodies were the majestic 'tMarseillaise',, the national anthem of France, L'A1ouette, Il etait un Bergere, and Frere Jacques. The pride of Le Cercle Francaise is the scenario of a play of the French novel La Tour de Monde . J The success of the varied programs paid worthy tribute to the advice of Miss Belle C. Inspired by a thirst for a greater knowledge of science and enticed by a variety of interesting experiments, a number of students, who pro- pose to major in chemistry, wound their Way into the chemistry labor- atory every Thursday evening at seven-fifteen. Club meetings took on an Alladin atmosphere, when with one rub of the finger, members converted iron rust into boiling irony or with a twitch, transformed camphor into moth ballsg or with a final tug revo- lutionized fats for my lady's cosmetics. Equally awe inspiring to the chemist novice were the production of porcelain vases, combustion under water, experiments on liquid light, and the manufacture of explosives, the latter being so successful that the United States should have no fear in ease of war. Mr. Otis Skinner ably conducted the meetings in a vigilant and careful manner. This, the gift of Mrs. George N. Reed, was formally dedicated on Sunday, March 10. After moving into their new home, the girls immediately realized the Wonderful opportunity afforded there for entertaining. To begin their program the girls revived the custom of bi-monthly dances on Saturday nights. Taking advantage of leap year the club entertained at an Easter Monday dinner dance. Deserving top honors for their outstanding achievements, the Oil City Senior High School band receives our award as one of the outstanding musical organizations of the school this year. The band also merits credit for promoting enthu- siasm at the football and basketball games with their lively marches. Our pride and joy is the fact that while they have only been organized two years, the band, under the excellent direction of Mr. Philip Runzo, defeated one of Senior's rivals, Sharon, to take first place in the Northwestern Music Contest. An- other outstanding fcature of the band is the new blue uniforms, which greatly add to their appearance. lVhile the band this year numbers eighty five pieces, next yearls will prove larger with one hundred seventy members. High atop Baldpate Mountain, the action begins with the caretakers, Mr. and Mrs. Quimby, cleaning up pending the arrival of one William Hallowell Magee, an author. Upon his arrival the Quimbys present him with the Honly key to the inn and then depart-leaving him in solitude to fulfill a 35,000 wager to write a complete novel in twenty-four hours. His first interruption proves to be a millionaire's indispensible right- hand man, John Bland, who has come to deposit some 3200,000 in the safe of the inn. Proceedings brighten visibly when Mary Norton, an ace reporter, appears on the scene for a story of Magee's wager. Needless to say it is a case of love at first sight for the interviewer and her interviewee. The plot thickens beautifully as Myra Thornhill, a charming black- mailer, appears with designs on the 3l5200,000. The play ends with the clearing up of the mystery of the many keys, with Magee finishing his novel and thus winning the wager, with the bandits being captured, with Mary scooping all the other papers with her story on the arrests, and of course with Magee proposing to Mary. This year's commencement play, Jane Eyre , one of Charlotte Bronte's outstanding novels, depicts the life of a shy, intense little orphan who takes the position of governess to Mr. Rochester's ward, Adele Varens. Mr. Rochester, who soon finds himself falling in love with Jane is a strange, unpredictable man. His moodiness is due to the fact that he is married to an insane woman whose identity has been long kept secret in a scrupulously concealed West Wing of Thornfield Hall, where most of the action takes place. Breaking slightly over even with 10 victories and 8 defeats the Oil City Basketball squad greatly ex- ceeded pre-season expectations. With only one returning letterinan and three others of any experience to speak of, Coach Wells didnyt have much to work with. There were thrills and heartaches as the Oilers leaped froni defeat in the first league fray to a tie for first place in the last. A few of the highlights of the season were a one point victory over Franklin, an overtiine session with Titusville, and the night the reserves shined,' by trouncing DuBois. The Oil City .TVys by virtue of only one league defeat were the undisputed Junior Varsity champions of Section H, District 10, P. I. A. A. The Collinsmen lost two dual meets to Warren, and defeated Bradford in a triangular and a dual meet. In the Northwestern P, l. A A. at Erie they finished fourth, in the lVestern Regional at Slippery Rock, fifth, and fifth in State. The highlight of the year was Fred Young's capture of the first state athletic title ever to be brought to Oil City, rope climbing in 4.9 seconds. Next year the team loses five lettermen through the medium of gradua- tion, however with the material remaining and new ones developing, a fine team can be looked for next year. A. with only one defeat and surged on to State. The hard-spiking Munhall crew defeated the Oilers in the semi-finals but not Without a fight. With the entire first squad, lettermen, remaining from last year and a host of coming stars, the Wellsmen, although for the first time in five years, not gaining the State finals presented a fighting front. Having been chosen on the qualities of sports- manship, ability to play, and interest in basketball thc girls pictured on the opposite page were chosen to represent the senior class in the girls' intcrclass basketball tournament which started March fifth and ended April second. Each of the girls faithfully showed up at every game and did her part to help the Senior team win first place in the interclass games. In the first game against the Juniors the Seniors set a pace which the underclass team found could not bc beat, thus the Seniors reigned victor- ious in each game and captured first place and the title of HCl12111lI'JSH.
