The Sigma Kappi Sigma was founded as an honorary Senior Key Society by the staff of the 1935 Oil Can with the intention of each succeeding yearbook staff perpetuating the society by adding six representative Seniors, three boys and three girlsg the selections to be made by the Senior Class in secret ballot. The schedule mapped out by Miss Klemm, physical education in- structress, provided that each of the eleven teams play against the other teams entered in the competition. At the close of the season, which lasted from January 18 to March 18, Senior lll was in the lead. The girls com- prising the team follow: Margaret Anne Bush, Ethel Culbertson, Helen Anderton, Cecelia Churchak, Betty Ward, Buth Boring, and Betty Vender. GIRLS' GYMNASIUM CLASS Among the activities conducted in the girls' gymnasium classes, under the direction of Miss Gertrude Klemm, are various forms of dancing and acrobatics. such as are pictured in the illustration. Included in the gym course are basketball, indoor baseball, volley ball, asthetic dancing, folk dances, tumbling and relay races. INTER-CLASS BASKETBALL The race for the inter-class basketball championship this year ended in a tie between the Juniors and Seniors. ln the playoff game. between the teams, the Juniors achieved the rare distinction of defeating the Senior team. Monthly meetings afforded a means of banding together in good fellowshic and improving school athletics. Separate sets of officers were chosen for the fall and spring terms. President Francis Guyda' eWilliam Lee Vice President James Emanuel Secretary William Lee e Richard Ziegler Treasurer c Stanley Kalamajka e John Griggs QLRQZAANHZZAEFUQNS llllIlllllllllllllllllllllll HD' S l The four music clubs of the school, the A Cappella Choir, the Boys' Chorus, the Girls' Chorus, and the Orchestra when taken together as a single music group form the largest organization at Senior. Each separate group meets four times a week under the leadership of lVlr. Mitchell. These clubs have, as a whole met with good success in the various contests which they have entered, as shown by the array of cups and banners in the trophy case, and as an organization they are a distinct asset to the school. GILSON ROGERS MARY JANE BLAKELEY H. C. MITCHELL HELEN YORKE JACK GOODRICH MUSIC DIRECTORS Mr. Harland C. Mitchell, director of music at Senior, has definitely placed Oil City on the map as a top ranking competitor for music honors in the state. In the past few years both the Boys' and Girls' Choruses along with the orchestra have ranked very high in all the contests in which they have been entered. The Girls' Chorus has been especially strong, winning the state championship for three consecutive years. The A Cappella Choir this year, owing to the fact that it was entirely composed of inexperienced Sophomores, did not enter competition, but nevertheless, those that have heard the Choir sing have expressed their amazement at the rate at which they have improved. All in all the entire music group reflects the genius of their director, Mr. Mitchell. The music group has also done excellent in the productions which they have regularly presented as part of their program. This year, the opera, ll Trovatore , and the musical comedy, Hollywood Bound , were the main events of the season. The combined music clubs were likewise instrumental in bringing to the school the celebrated University of Pittsburghs' Pitt Band. The presidents of the separate music organizations shown above are: Jack Goodrich, orchestra presidentg Mary Jane Blakeley, president of Girls' Chorus, Gilson Rogers, president of Boys' Chorus, and Helen Yorke, president of the A Cappella Choir. ORCHESTRA Our sixty-four piece orchestra has contributed a great deal to the success of the many programs for which they have played throughout the year. They especially did good work in accompanying for the opera and the operetta. The orchestra, though devoting much time before the district contest to hard practice on the contest numbers, failed to take first place. However, the members who made the trip will certainly remember for some time their enjoyable experience at Grove City. A CAPPELLA CHOIR The A Cappella Choir, although it was not the select group this year, has improved considerably during the course of the year. Composed entirely of Sophomore boys and girls, the group at the beginning of the first semester had little experience, butunder the guidance of Mr. Mitchell the Choir has developed into a first class musical group. By belonging to this organization the students have derived great benefit and added to their enjoyment of the school year. I 17 IL TROVI-STORE The combined music clubs of the high school under the direction of Mr. Harland C. Mitchell presented the concertized version of the popular opera, ll Trovatore, on February 9, 11, and 12. Two well known and much appreciated scenes from the opera itself. the gypsy camp scene and the prison scene were enacted by a selected group from the A Cappella Choir, Boys' Chorus, and Girls, Chorus. Soloists for the operatic part of the program included Edward Erickson, Dorothy Thurau, Melvin Aikens, Ethel Mae Post, and Ray Mitcham. HOLLYWOOD BOUND Dancing choruses, grinding cameras, fan-fare, fashion shows, and strains of popular music constituted the main entertainment in the operetta, Hollywood Bound , which was presented bythe Boys' and Girls' choruses and the orchestra on February 9, 11, and 12, under the supervision of the music director, IVlr. Harland C. Mitchell. This musical comedy, the first given by the Music Clubs in a number of years, was well received each night of its run, and the pupils who participated felt well repaid for the work and effort which they put forth in presenting the show. GIRLS' GLEE CLUB Our one consolation! For the last three years the girls have won the state contest and have thereby obtained permanent possession of the cup which now embellishes the Senior Trophy Case. Such continued success can only be attributed to two thingsfthe hard work of the girls and the fine and capable direction of lVlr. Nlitchell. This year this group has already won the district contest and is highly favored to repeat its victories at the state finals at Altoona. BOY'S GLEE CLUB The Junior and Senior boys that make up the boys' chorus this year have done excellent work according to lVlr. Nlitchell. On account of the hard work and great effort that each member put forth, Mr. Mitchell announced that he would take them to the state contest at Altoona, despite the fact that they did not receive first place at the districts at Grove City. So far this year the members of the chorus have participated in two events, the operetta, Hollywood Bound and the opera, Il Trovatoref' il GIRLS' TRIO The girls who make up this year's trio are: Ethel Mae Post, Lois Carpenter, and Peggy Norton. These girls spent many hours in practice and were well rewarded by their beautiful blending in song. They also had the honor of singing for the Lyons' Club and different organizations in Oil City. mfg gi1liazi'azri L' M BOYS' QUARTET The boys' quartet, which has represented our school in many ways and different places, is composed of Melvin Aikens, Gilson Rogers, Daniel Fiddler, and Raymond Mitcham. Many of our assembles have had added spice through the quartet's contribution of a mixed collection of songs. On April 17, they jourreyed to Pittsburgh where they sang on a regular Saturday program. They have sung at business men's banquets and at a number of out-of- town meetings and performarces. Betty Ross accompanied them at the piano for all of their performances. 42 IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII E IR M 255. T ll CG S 'I I I ll I I MR LEWIS MISS MCATEE MISS BREWSTER MR. MITCHELL PLAY COACHES Fortunately for all concerned our high school is blessed with members of the faculty who have the ability and who are sufficiently interested in the students' activities to devote a part of their time to the coaching of the various school plays. Each year the Senior Class looks to Mr. Lewis for the coaching of their two most important productions, the Senior Play and the Commencement Play, and each year Mr. Lewis responds by turning out some very fine amateur productions. We feel that Mr. Lewis, who is head of the Speech Department, should be commended very highly for his work in producing these plays. Miss McAtee and Miss Brewster, who coach the annual mystery play, are likewise noted in our city as well as in our school for the fine work which they put forth in producing this school play. The fact that the mystery play is always a sell-out is attributed to the fine efforts of these two teachers. Little need be said concerning the excellent work of Mr. Mitchell in turning out the presentations of the music department. This year both an opera and a musical comedy were given by Mr. Mitchell and the music clubs. The fact that both were a great success perhaps best shows the ability of Mr. Mitchell. OH, PROFESSOR A rapidly moving farce filled with humorous complications was the Senior play attraction on December 17 and 18. Michael Pemberton, a playboy, in an effort to escape from the designs of Mlle. Fifi, a Parisian show girl, poses as Professor Courtwright at a girls' summer school. The difficulties of all kinds that crop up forthe young imposter coupled with a series of tangled love interests provided exceptional entertainment for enthusiastic audiences. The cast included: Paul Giltinan, Helen McMahon, Margaret Yorke, Helen Blakeley, Gail Thurston, Loretta Tompkins, Leonard Klivans, Robert Whipple, Richard Kuntz, Francis Lutz, Helen Rybak, and Mary Grolemund. THE HOUSE OF SEVEN GABLESH The memory of Nathaniel Hawthorne's immortal novel is brought back to us in this year's commencement play, The House ol Seven Gables. The cast of twenty-two were picked at the beginning of the year by the judges, Mr. Thompson, Miss Meditz, and Mr. Lewis, and a special class was formed for the rehearsing ofthe play. The cast under the direction of Mr. Lewis includes: William Acks as Robert Thornton, Jean Blacklock as Sarah, George Dreher as Thomas Talbot, George Hughy as Mr. Holgrave, Dan Fiddler as Uncle Jeffrey, Paul Giltinan and Francis Lutz as passers-by, Leonard Klivans as Joffrey, Ellen Kulhman as Margaret Meredith, Dick Kuntz as Clifford Pyncheon, Ray Mitcham as Sitgraves, Helen Lindquist as Phoebe Pyncheon, Helen Mc- Mahon as Mrs. Gubbins, Gilson Rodgers as Uncle Venner, Margaret Ann Rush as Patience, Helen Rybak as Tabitha Gubbins, La Vonne Smith as Beulah Thornton, Marjory Smith as Hepzibah Pyncheon, Robert Steele as Dr. Sloan, Gail Thurston and Margaret Yorke as customers, and Loretta Thompkins as Lucy Talbot. l THE GHOST TRAIN The Ghost Train , a story of a small group of people stranded over- night at a haunted railroad station, was the annual school mystery play pre- sented on March 4 and 5. Aseries of very strange happenings lead to a final solution and a sur- prise ending. The characters were: Dick Kuntz, Ann Ramsey, Gerald Stoner, Bob Whipple, Sara Jane Klock, Helen McMahon, Frank Thompson, Mary Grole- mund, Leonard Klivans, Edward Pollard, Daniel Fiddler, Melvin Aikens, and Jack Hoover. STAGE FORCE The members of the stage force are a willing and versatile group. They not only paint and design the scenery, set the stage for plays and con- trol the lights but also create the sound effects that go to make up a large part of a play. Although the members of this group do not receive the honors that the actors do we feel that they have just as important a part in our school productions as the actors themselves. The stage force under the supervision of lVlr. Stantonland lVlr. Townley includes: Boyd Shiner, stage managerg Anson Burwell, electriciang Jack and Fred Bonnett, carpentersg George Dreher, property managerg and Horace Lowers. Steve Clouso and Ted Nlohnkern as stage hands. I ir MISS EDDY MISS MACKEY MISS HOY MISS MACKENZIE CLUB ADVISORS Under the guidance of the advisors shown above, the students who have participated in the activities of the various school clubs have added real enjoyment to their school life, and at the same time have received extra in- struction in the work which their club represents.
