T ORMENTED by themes, our first semester ' s exposure to the English department will long be remembered by most of us. However, later work in the department convinced us that our first impression was, indeed, a wrong one. Of course, we will never forget the snap quizzes of the humanities depart ment, but neither will we forget the many interesting class periods we spent discussing the great books used in the course. Although we may never go to Paris, Madrid, or Berlin, our courses in the foreign languages hove been valuable as background material for much of our other work. Through the editions of the Owl, Bijou, and Transcript, the journalists among us were given ample opportunity to practice the style which the department of journalism had so patiently taught them. nepartnient ol E]ii£ li. li The freshman course in English composition, the intermediate courses in contemporary literature, narrative writing, and Shakespeare, and the senior studies of literary criticism and masterpieces are all means to the end of a more complete insight and mastery of the English language. Within the realm of English studies are the opportunities for a complete appraisal of the literary works of the past and present, which lead to an increased knowledge and the development of a more profound philosophy.
