CONCENTRATION OF ENERGIES AND IDEAS AND FREELY FLAUNTED LOYALTIES GIVE CLUE TO COMING COMMOTION POLITICAL SCIENCE The clamor of campaign oi ' atory, plus the picturesque placard parades against the din of group discussions on all sides; these are the elements of every nominating con- vention which is worthy to be called such. Chapter twelve of the political science textbook contains a comprehensive description of a national nominating convention, but the act ual staging of a mock convention clinches the techni- cal and theoretical aspects of it. Real boisterous enthusi- asm in starting a demonstration, the clamor of bitter ar- guments, bargaining, and trading votes with neighbor- ing states, and heated party orations sweep t ' le saident into the life and excitement of a political convention. Professors Arneson, SUachan, and Wickham have a wealth of experience in the functions of government, and share in stimulating class discussions. By precept and example principles are presented by professor SPEECH Anyone of us can talk, but few of us can speak. The would- be orator stumbles awkardly toward the platform, weak- kneed and trembling at the thought of his debut in speech delivery. With a gulp he stares into the sea of faces, com- prising his audience, and a quavering voice, which he hardly recognizes as his own, breaks the uncomfortable silence. Time passes. Weak of voice and weak of knees is this debut. First class speech The fine arts of persuasions, declamation, and argumenta- tion are met and mastered. Professors Hunter, Lloyd, and Alexander, with patience and persistence, point out the possibilities for improvement. Seeing a potential after-din- ner speaker, political leader, teacher, or just a winner of an argument with the wife, they guide him in his grasp of tips for talking. After polishing and perfecting his individual style, with pride and assurance he delivers a speech to a spell-bound audience.
