Effortless and energless the manuscript is done. She prays a bit JOURNALISM Full of big ideas about the movie-version-reporter who dashes about from murder and melee; from book-review to banquet, Wesleyan ' s would-be-foundation of the free press, carry themselves over the threshold of beginning journal- ism. Bowed over a battered typewriter, or grasping the end of a chewed pencil stub, the young cubs grind out or spill out story after story in the hours that follow. Under the capable editorship of Gerry Young, from headline and front-page news, to funny paper and fea- tures, the daily newspaper is written, re-written, copy read and proof-read. With ink of the press on their fingers, little men and women, with big ideas about advertising, dip into the pockets of their genius and come out with complete to the last detail advertising campaigns. Full-page color prints promoting such sales for all articles even to Wreck- a-Rat rat traps, are ready for publication. Advancing in the literary fields, lads and la ' isies of the flowing pen spend many a quiet evening surrounded by crumpled papers and an overflowing wastebasket. Now the reward comes! Feature-writing classes heralds hard labor with the sale of said efforts to susceptible superiors of li- terary publications. Seminar in history of journalism style yields projects later turned into articles for none less than Editor Publisher. Perhaps a check from the publishers of a national maga- zine or house organs will make up for those hours before the dawn, and cups of coffee drained in keeping awake to meet the deadlines. The final reward comes when they see their names in print over a precise and perfect bit of writing. Transcript ' s well of talent springs from those deep crevices in journalism students ' minds. Such niches store and steam such fact as editorial policy, reader group, advertising campaigns and type face. Pictorial journalism, the new inch on the literary hori- zon! Tell your stories, supplement with captions, these are the ideals of the field. A picture of horizontal dimensions, cruelly pushed into a nine-inch vertical, but don ' t despair, one slide-rule, one grease pencil, a little mental lightening, and it is done to the very specification. Knowing all phases of the journalistic realm is excellent for bolstering up ambitious journalists. So chances to bear traces of printer ' s ink on fingers and face, changes to slash and scrawl proof-reader ' s symbols across galley and chance for personal contact with people in the field are presented frequently to fascinated enthusiasts. There are tricks to the trade, without a doubt, and one of the first-last-and-always truisms is that you have to have something to say, know how to say it, and have eye-appeal to your lay-out. THESE LINES AND ANGLES WITH AN ALPHABETICAL SLANT MAY SOUND SIMPLE TO SOLVE BUT YOU FIND YOU CANT Rufus Crane viewing the product of his hobby spread out here MATHEMATICS When a grueling day of work comes to a close, a day spent in drilling his navy-civilian math understudies in the com- plicated cousins of adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. Professor Rufus Crane, the department of mathe- matics ' head trainer, packs away his slide rules and his headaches and turns toward home. Now sometimes, he is found engrossed in a good mystery novel or a session over the chess board, but on certain occasions you are sure to find him wrapped up in looking through his famous violet collection. As a result of 17 years of purposeful flower picking, Dr. Crane now has pressed and mounted most every form of ordinary flowering plant and fern. He began taking an interest in plant life back in his Middleburg College days in 1908, and his active interest lasted until after he came to Wesleyan as mathematics instructor. He claims his vari- eties to hail from New England, Kansas, Illinois, Wiscon- sin, and Ohio. Dr. Crane admits, I was once tempted to be a botanist, but turned it down in favor of something more practical. Thus the slide-rule and equations stepped in to claim his attention. From the aroma of violets to the angles and theorems of mathematics is a sizeable step but he still has the tangible remains of the resisted temptation to muse over in leisure hours. 22
