ZOOLOGY The weaker sex wiggles and even the stronger sex squirms, when the first zoology class features their intro- duction to the bulging-eyed-beauties, the bullfrog. The scalpel and scissors, whose use is painfully apparent are tremulously grasped as Professor Hanhert begins an ex- planation of the fine art of dissection. Six weeks later sees competence and serenity in the wield- ers of the wicked scalpels upon the beautiful cadaver of the frog. The depart- ments of geology and history are necessarily seperated in the college curriculum to give opportunity to probe each more deeply. But the fact remains that the natural re- The lay u( Uie land scanned by surveyors-to-be . . . THESE LINES AND ANGLES WITH AN ALPHABETICAL SLANT MAY SOUND SIMPLE TO SOLVE BUT YOU FIND YOU CANT Rufus Crane viewing the product of his hobby spread out here MATHEMATICS When a grueling day of work comes to a close, a day spent in drilling his navy-civilian math understudies in the com- plicated cousins of adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. Professor Rufus Crane, the department of mathe- matics ' head trainer, packs away his slide rules and his headaches and turns toward home. Now sometimes, he is found engrossed in a good mystery novel or a session over the chess board, but on certain occasions you are sure to find him wrapped up in looking through his famous violet collection. As a result of 17 years of purposeful flower picking, Dr. Crane now has pressed and mounted most every form of ordinary flowering plant and fern. He began taking an interest in plant life back in his Middleburg College days in 1908, and his active interest lasted until after he came to Wesleyan as mathematics instructor. He claims his vari- eties to hail from New England, Kansas, Illinois, Wiscon- sin, and Ohio. Dr. Crane admits, I was once tempted to be a botanist, but turned it down in favor of something more practical. Thus the slide-rule and equations stepped in to claim his attention. From the aroma of violets to the angles and theorems of mathematics is a sizeable step but he still has the tangible remains of the resisted temptation to muse over in leisure hours. 22
