NAUTICAL KNOWLEDGE IN THE CLASSROOM AND BOOKS ASSISTS ENSIGNS - TO - BE IN PLOTTING THEIR COURSE ASTRONOMY Yes, the boys in the bell-bottomed trousers may be able to navigate a row boat around the quarry very deftly, but when it comes to handling a little larger craft, for instance, a battleship, we will turn them over to celestial navigation class with a sigh of relief and a plea for assistance. Navigation as the blazed trail for the unexperienced and the experienced sailor, alike. Through nav, the Wesleyan V-12 learns to chart his course by studying the stars. Coastlines and currents, cloud form- ations and winds are charted by the future ensigns, until every lurch of his vessel can be predicted with precision by him. Star-gazing is no longer an idle fancy for passing time on crisp winter evenings or balmy spring nights. The pat- terns of stars, making the heavens a virtual picture album, are not only decorative gifts of nature, but are also yard- sticks by which boats may purposefully plot the course to their destination.
