PRESIDENT As the hearty voice of Wesleyan ' s white-haired president, Dr. Herbert J. Burgstahler, welcomes into the Wesleyan family its old and new mem- bers, thus begins, or is renewed, the relationship of students with a fine gentleman and confi- dence-inspiring personality of their school. At the first convocation of the college year, Presi- dent Burgstahler helps the students in thinking through the principal opportunities afforded by a college education and in determining their personal standards of values to guide their work in school-life and in their professions after graduation. In this war year, his convocation message was particularly pertinent and penetrat- ing in its analysis of the Quest before the stu- dents of Ohio Wesleyan University, in particular, and before all college students of this day. In talking with the student body in the chapel on that Sunday morning, he urged that each one consider for his goal, to increase in wisdom and stature, and favour with God and man. He pointed out the opportunity of growth in wisdom and knowledge which is afforded by the fine li- brary and the experienced instructors here at Wesleyan. The physical growth and health of the students can be aided by establishing reg- ularities in living which will serve him all of his life. The choice of right companions, and ulti- mately the right life companion as well as the choice of your life ' s work will be made more in- telligently in the atmosphere of college life than in the rushed and often irrational environ- ment of everyday life where such guidance is not available. Behind all of man ' s action is the dom- inating motive of his life. Now is the time when the student will be dedicating his life to some purpose; that this purpose be a worthy one is the goal of instruction and experience provided at Ohio Wesleyan. President Burgstahler is a personification of this type of person. His manner and personality reflect the ideas he so-well expressed in this year ' s convocation address. He is known for his friendly smile, his campus strolls, his out-of- town trips to represent Wesleyan in the academ- ic administrative world, and for his interest in the student body as a group and individually. As chapel speaker, from time to time throughout the year, as guest speaker at individual campus group ' s meetings, and as an interesting conver- sationalist when met on campus he becomes a friend, whom the members of each student body will recall with pleasure after having been grad- uated from Wesleyan for many years. In the six years of his leadership at Ohio Wesley- an, he has been a friend to trustees, faculty and students, alike.

ALL FEMININE APPEALS ARE SOFTLY (?) VOICED AS TAXI AND DRIVER ' S ENDURANCE REACH THEIR LIMIT ARRIVAL If you are a coed, you may be one of two varieties, the someone new who ' s been added or a return-of-the-native upperclassman. Prior to your arrival at Wesleyan ' s sta- tion, your sweet temper has been taxed by the trials of the center aisle of the train. But it was fun meeting other Wesleyan-bound girls and fellows, and exchanging in- formation and speculation concerning the treat you have in store. You learn that the lassie beside you is the third-generation representative of her family at Wes- leyan. At the station you pile into an under-nourished overcrowd- ed cab and try to breathe or hold your breath until you are delivered at the dorm. Into the dorm; you start the climb to the elevation assigned to you for the year; first, second, or third floor. Together with your roommates, and disregarding un- packed luggage, you promptly put out the welcome mat and start to promote the good neighbor policy by wandering the length of the hall exchanging hellos with the other coeds of the class of ' 48. If you ' re one of the upperclass clan, you think It ' s swell to be back. Having been conditioned to crowded trains and rooms to be made livable, you generously spread the good tidings and tips for quick adjustment among the newcomers. This is the Wesleyan friendliness personified, a fact to which any freshman will readily testify. Optimistic and Determined to Wait for Taxi! C ' Est La Guerre
