O. D. K. was formed from a group of members of Alpha Kappa Alpha, a society formed by the consolidation of Toas tmasters and Jesters. The Boosters Club was aban- doned immediately after the O. D. K. petition was granted and all the functions of that organization were given to the new society. So Omicron Delta Kappa is a fusion of the old Toastmasters, Jesters and Boosters Club. O. D. K. was founded in 1914 at Washington and Lee University. Today it has twenty-five chapters in the leading colleges and universities of the country and is spread- ing rapidly. Tau Circle was installed at Ohio Wesleyan on the night of May 15th, 1927, with seventeen initiates. The first president was Wilson Anderson. The Circle drew up the point system for election and proceeded to select this year ' s group. O. D. K. is open to any senior man who has displayed leadership in extra-curric- ular activities, outstanding proficiency in one activity and consistent scholarship. Each ac- tivity is listed in the point system and a total of forty-five points is n ecessary. Twenty of these, and not more than thirty, must be in one department. Hence a man must have versatility of interests and, at the same time, must excell in at least one. In addition a 1.5 scholarship is required. The selection is announced by tapping the man in chapel. Tap Day is now one of the gala days of the college calendar. This ceremony is held on December 5th and May 25th. In addition, one third of the membership is required to be faculty members. These faculty members are active members with full vote for four years. Then they become associate members. So O. D. K. is really an organization of faculty and students and aids in bringing better relations between the two groups. O. D. K. has charge of all special days of the university. This year they gave a new excellence to the Homecoming, Dad ' s Day and High School Day. They also boost any- thing that is for the best interests of the University. To finance worthy projects, the fraternity produced two shows, Easy Come, Easy Go and It ' s All In Good Clean Fun. The last named was written, produced and acted by Ohio Wesleyan students under O. D. K. supervision. In order to stimulate friendliness, the fraternity meets for lunch every Monday. Fine feeling and efficiency have characterized its every action this year. O. D. K. has assumed its place as one of the most useful and worthwhile campus organizations. It is one of the most coveted of honors by all men. The members for the present year were: Philip Ebeling, President; Bernhard Mercer, Secretary-Treasurer; Spring Election — Paul Anderson, Harry Berno, Philip Ebeling, Robert Helwig, Beverly Kelly, Ted Mayer, Bernhard Mercer; Fall Election — Roland Allen, Edward Harper, John Hoffman, Ellis Radcliffe, Robert Tilton; Faculty Members — President John W. Hoffman, Dean W. R. Sanders, Dean W. E. The Wilmington game, therefore, was a trial battle — the players being constantly shifted. The team of Quakers, however, was much faster and trickier than had been expected so that Wesleyan won only after a bitter fight. Don Campbell started his first game at guard and played a fine enough game to insure him a place on the team for the remainder of the season. The whole line, in fact, showed its strength, while the backs were weak through inexperience. Michigan 33 — Ohio Wesleyan The game with Michigan was played on a wet, hot day so that neither team was able to play its best. Ohio Wesieyan ' s line received much commendation for the manner in which it held back the thrusts of the Michigan ball-carriers. Michigan scored all their touchdowns because of the failure of the Wesleyan backs to cope with the atrial attack revolving around Osterbaan and Gilbert. Wesleyan ' s entire line starred in this game, while Osterbaan and Gilbert carried the brunt of the Michigan attack. f i } Tilton Leary i X Bijou Helwig Kyle Miami 35 — Ohio Wesleyan 7 After the hard game at Michigan, the Bishops were scarcely in any condition to meet such a team as Miami turned out. Stryker and company made the Wesleyan team appear woefully weak. From the Wesleyan standpoint, the only bright feature was the promise of a developing forward pass attack. It was the inability of Wesleyan ' s backs again to stop passes that lost the game. Ohio Wesleyan 7 — Marshall Marshall College came up from the wilds of West Virginia with an unknown and unheralded eleven. The game proved to be stubbornly fought, but from the spectators standpoint it was slow and uninteresting. In this game, the Wesleyan attack began to show flashes of the form that was later to make the team one of the best in the con- ference. Murray Myers m$ I jL Bijou 1 Halliday Glancy Ohio Wesleyan 7 — Denison 2 The Denison game, as expected, turned out to be closely contested and well-played throughout. In this game Bob Waid showed his power as a punter. Kyle played a spectacular game at end, nailing the ball-carrier behind the line frequently for losses. Glancy, who scored the winning touchdown for Wesleyan, ripped the center of the Denison line to shreds. Ohio Wesleyan 9 — Wooster 7 Coach L. C. Boles, an alumnus of Ohio Wesleyan, brought a scrappy team with him from Wooster to meet the Battling Bishops. This was another one of those hot af- ternoons, and the lighter Wooster team, lacking the reserve strength of Wesleyan, wilted to allow Wesleyan to push across the winning score in the last few minutes of play. Captain Pete Blough showed himself to be of true All-Ohio caliber in this game, his educated toe and elusive running nearly spelling defeat for the home team. For Wesleyan, the line-plunging of Glancy and the end-running of Halliday featured. ) I J } i L Bijau Breese Waid Ohio Wesleyan 6 — Syracuse 6 With memories of the brilliant game of two years before still fresh, the Battling Bishops made their pilgrimage to Syracuse. This game did nothing to end the deadlock between the two schools as it ended in another tie. Ted Fran? electrified the stand by his sparkling 88 yard run for a touchdown. The aim and ambition of the Ohio Wesleyan team is to come back from Syracuse next year with something more substantial than a tie score. Wittenberg 9 — Ohio Wesleyan 7 Coming down to this game with Wesleyan ' s traditional rivals and with a chance at the Buckeye title, the Bishops put up their best game of the season. Old man jinx, however, who had been plaguing Wittenberg in previous Wesleyan encounters, turned on the Methodists. Glancy ' s place kick, which would have won the game if successful, missed by inches when a vagrant Springfield breeze caught it. Captain Vic Maurer of Wittenberg and the Lutheran line played a steady game. For Wesleyan, Tilton, Halli- day, Glancy and Thomas starred. SlEGENTHALER McKlNNEY S7ft 2? Ohio Wesleyan — Ohio University The final game of the season with Ohio University was a decided anti-climax to an interesting season. The Wesleyan team seemed listless after their battle against Witten- berg and the Bob-cats of Athens lacked the scoring punch necessary to win. A score- less tie was inevitable and thus ended another successful football season for Ohio Wes- leyan. frtLielHjou Jrosn Jootball Oquad Top Row: G. Staten, W. Cornelli, R. Walls, R. His sure eye caused opposing pitchers no end of trouble. Johnny Corlette made a fine utility man, as he could catch, play in the infield, or run flies to earth in the outfield. His hitting also qualified him for the job of pinch-hitter. Czar Allen lived up to his name by being the uncrowned king of the sluggers. His bat- ting average this year is expected to rival Ty Cobb ' s. Besides Czar is a steady man to have behind the bat. Buck Lamme, of basketball and football fame, was good enough to get a try-out with the Columbus Senators. He specialized in sparkling stops at the initial sack. Dan Shaper, of hot-dog fame, also was one of those versatile men. His speed was reminis- cent of Dawy Vance and his humor akin to that of the well-known Nick Altrock, who works for another good ball club. s Allen Lamme i i i t i X JMjour MlSAMORE Stetson Harlow Coz Misamore did not reach his stride until near the end of the season; then he began to burn them over with all his weight behind them. He should prove the most effective pitcher on the team this year. Bob Stetson was Buck Lamme ' s understudy at first and a good outfielder as well. Swing- ing from the left side of the plate he was always useful as a pinch-hitter. Paul Harlow spent most of his time roaming about the outer garden although he could if necessary play the infield. His loss will be keenly felt on this season ' s team. Lottie Myers, who gamboled in right field or tossed them up to the hitters on the other team, also won renown as a second Babe Ruth. In stature, speed, and home-run hit- ting he all but equalled the famous Babe. Tommy Thompson, who threw them over from the wrong side, is a living disproof of the saying that all south-paws are insane. His strength lies in his control and steadiness. The game he pitched against Wittenberg was a model of effectiveness. Myers Thompson i L Bijou • t i Tingley, Mgr. Johnny Tingley was left with full mana- gerial duties when the senior manager, Heiny Grow, left school. His duties were performed always in a most admirable manner. Pokie Morrison was a steady second-base- man. He is expected to develop into a rival for the justly famed Rajah Hornsby at the keystone sack. His name, Pokie, however, was not bestowed on him because of his base- running proclivities. Joe Hartley, the demon ball chaser of the middle pasture, excelled as a lead-off man and base-runner. His timely hits and activity as a ball hawk Morrison make him valuable again this year. Don Hamilton was a good pitcher who could always be depended upon to hurl the best brand of ball of which he was capable. He should prove even more valuable this year than he was last. Dan Healy, who is versatile enough to cover almost any position, played at third and field most of the time. His favorite trick was to slam the ball safely out of the lot, thus caus- ing considerable worry to the opposing field- ers. t Hartley Hamilton JTftO |L IHjou! J Irosn ijaseball Oquad Top Row: M. The Chest is significant of the finer and nobler spirit on the Ohio Wesleyan Campus, because the contributions made to the Chest are placed not only on our own Campus but in other schools in the world where real student need exists. This institution is supported solely by contribu- tion made from the students. Each fall, a drive is made and it is significant to note that the drive last year was in no manner in the background so far as contributions were concerned. The true nature of the Chest is revealed by the causes it aids. On the Campus of Ohio Wesleyan, two of the leading organizations in Student Life are partly supported by the Chest. The Y. M. C. A. and the Y. W. C. A. are both largely dependent upon the Student Chest for financial help. Another wor- thy thing which this institution aids is the Student Loan Fund, a fund which makes short time loans to needy students here on Wesleyan ' s Campus. In ad- dition, two colleges in mission fields, Lucknow Col- lege and the Sister College are assisted in their en- deavors by the Student Chest. A few other causes which are not connected with the University also receive contributions. Pft g Dramatic iL Bijou f ' Histrionic 1) C-lub Top Row: A. Winters, E. Dawson, T. Gorman, H. Brown, D. Membership is open to all students on the Campus above Freshman rank and is attained by the try-out process which is held early the first semester. There are generally about three times as many candidates try out for the Club as those that make it. Many social and minor activities concern the Club but the principal interest is centered in the presen- tation of major productions in Gray Chapel. This year three plays are being presented. The first was The Cat and the Canary, by John Willard, a thrilling mystery play that proved to be a novelty and delight. This play was presented December 9 and 10. On March 23 and 24, The Poor Nut, by J. E. and Elliott Nugent was given. This is a college comedy and met an electrically enthusiastic response by large audiences. Following the usual custom of presenting a Shakespearian play at Commencement time, the play offered this season will be Much Ado About Nothing, one of the liveliest of Shakespeare ' s Comedies. This play will be presented Saturday, June 9th. The. steady progress of the Glee Club is a tribute mainly to the man around which the Club ' s development is built. Guy E. McLean took the reins in hand back in 1914 and since that time there has been created a men ' s musical organisation which has won four state glee club contests over a period of six years, gained permanent possession of the Columbus Dispatch trophy cup for three consecutive victories among similar Ohio musical organizations, and carried the name of Ohio Wesleyan to Pan- ama, Canada, and to five European countries, in addition to traveling thous- ands of miles in the United States. That the singing of the Ohio Wesleyan Glee Club has been excellent is evi- denced by the success of the Club in competition with other fine musical organizations. That the Club ' s reception has been enthusiastic in many states and in many lands is evidenced by the thous- ands of inches of favorable press pub- licity gained by the Glee Club itself throughout the past few years. That the development of this particular branch of Ohio Wesleyan activity is largely due to the talent and the effort of the director is evident from the position of genuine admiration and af- _ r ..- 1 • i i • Professor fection which Mac occupies among q uy g McLean the college men he has trained. Director James W. Smith President Pffegg L Bijou The Blue Tune Trio c. European v_xOncert lour For the Ohio Wesleyan Glee Club to attempt an European concert tour of five countries was looked upon as an unusually difficult undertaking. Nevertheless, when the S. S. Empress of Australia arrived in the Quebec docks, early last August, she car- ried the Glee Club fresh from a series of concerts abroad. The Glee Club, composed of twentyfour members and Director McLean, left Montreal on June 24th abroad the S. S. Montrose. A party of fifty University Alumni and friends accompanied the singers throughout the trip. Following the arrival at Liverpool, the party spent a week in England; then crossed over to Holland for a concert at The Hague. Belgium was next, followed by a Rhine trip in Germany. A week in Paris wound up the trip. Concerts were given at intervals throughout the tour and included appearances at St. Martins in The Field Church, English Speaking Union, and American Society In- dependence Day Fete at the Savoy, London; The Hague, Holland; and an appearance before the Prince of Wales and royal party aboard the S. S. Em- press of Australia enroute to Quebec. An engagement at the Palace Thea- tre, Montreal, preceded the embarka- tion in June. Arrangements for the tour were made through the Art Crafts Guild Inc., of Chicago and the project was financed by the Glee Club without assistance from the University treas- ury. A six piece dance orchestra and a number of other feature attractions made up of Glee Club talent accom- panied the singers abroad. i i Darwin M. Forsythe Student Director Edward A. The first trip of the club was a week-end trip to Cincinnati where a complete concert was broadcasted. Other activities during the first year consisted of several trips to Columbus for Sunday evening concerts and for broadcasting. During the first year the club began serving as the chapel choir. The second year ' s activities were much the same as the first. During spring vacation the club made a very enjoyable trip to Cleveland. The mem- bership was increased to twenty-five. The year 1927-28 has seen a still greater increase in activity. By the close of the year the club will have giv- en more than twenty-five complete concerts, besides numerous occasions where it has assisted in programs. A European trip is being sponsored by the Singers Club for the coming summer. The membership numbers forty-five for this year. The varsity men participated in ten judged de- bates, of which seven were victories for Ohio Wesleyan, two defeats, and one a tie. The varsity women were involved in five judged debates, of which four were won by Ohio Wesleyan. In addition, the varsity men participated in eight non-decision con- tests, and the varsity women in six. Men and women together thus won eleven debates, lost three, tied one, and engaged in fourteen non-decision debates, in a total of twenty- five. Six of the eleven victories were won away from home. The freshman men and women engaged in ten debates, mostly non-decision contests. The largest number of men and women ever to represent Ohio Wesleyan in one year, engaged in the thirty-nine contests. There were nineteen different speakers for the varsity men, nine for the var- sity women, twelve for the freshman men, and eight for the freshman wom- en, a total of forty-eight different speakers. A team of varsity women, in an in- vasion of the east, made a clean sweep of the series of debates, winning at Vassar, Ursinus, and the American University, and engaging in a non- decision debate at New York Univer- sity. The men were not quite so for- tunate in their eastern trip. Early in the fall a get-to- gether was held in U 35 at which President Hoffman spoke to a goodly crowd. Later, the annual banquet was held and all pronounced it a fine success. Dr. Coe gave the address of the evening after several short toasts by the members. More than seventy were present at the banquet. A number of prayer groups have been conducted by various members at different times. These have been very inspirational to all who have been able to attend. The monthly meetings have been very successful and at- tendance has been very good. At the February meeting, the topic was of especial interest to all. At this meeting Professor Sheridan outlined the work that a student should complete in preparation for Seminary. A very helpful schedule was work- ed out for such preparation. In March, Dr. Hazzard spoke on the topic: The Devotional Life of the Minister. All re- ceived great benefit from this talk. The aim of the Club has been to develop and strengthen friendships among ministerial students and to receive all the benefits that can be derived from such association. It is the oldest club and to be asked to join is the aim of all campus philosophers. Elections are from those who have shown outstanding ability and interest in philosophy courses. With its two-fold purpose, the furthering of phil- osophical interests in the student body at large, and the promoting of keener interest and better under- standing of things philosophical within the group itself, The Philosophy Club has flourished and has become an important educational factor in the intel- lectual life of the school. Meetings are held every two weeks at which time series of papers by mem- bers are presented or talks are given by outstanding men in the field of philosophy. These are followed by a ' free for all ' discussion and a social hour. The officers were Philip Ebeling, President; Har- old Stevens, Vice President; Dorothy Hicks, Secre- tary; Rolland Allen, Treasurer. The club has been guided largely by Professor T. G. Spence XVnglisn Writers L lub Josephine Whittier President Nay, Will, said Ben Jonson sadly, as he passed back the verses which Will Shakespeare had handed him across the table, there is no market for them. The public is in- terested only in Success, and even the critics will not trouble to notice a young and obscure writer. Your plays, of course, are another matter. But if you want your verses heard Ben paused to swallow once or twice (what beverage history saith not) and then exclaimed, Eureka! A Club! We of the intelligentsia will form a club, where t he sound of our own voices, interpreting our own work, will be music in our ears. O rare Ben Jonson! cried Will Shakespeare. Who can criticize as fairly or impartially as a fellow-writer — particularly if he be unsuccessful! And in the pleasant warmth of the Mermaid ' s fire shall we grow in skill and complacence! The English Writers ' Club shares the opinion of its an- cestors. Here at Ohio Wesleyan, the club strives to fulfill the need for self-expression of the literary minded. Around the open fires of various fraternity houses, club members read their stories, poems, essays, or stage their own plays. Sometimes there is a digest of a much discussed book, or a criticism of late poetry. The aim of the club is to encour- age creative writing, in the hope that the not far-distant future will see a Campus publication which will serve the needs of its members. 1 1 L Btjau 7 t J 1 Top Row: A.
