X A Our Working Ideal Education must always include in its aims the development of character so that personality may express its best qualities in the highest moral and intellectual terms. Whatever the career selected, one so trained will exert an influence for truth and goodness of im- measurable value to humanity. His particular business in life be- comes his method of realizing the Divine Id eal. We therefore invite our students into a comradeship of fellow- workers that has for its splendid objective participation in a four- fold experience; a comradeship in the pursuit of learning; a comrade- ship in the building of vigorous physical life; a comradeship in the practice of the noblest virtues of Christian character; a comrade- ship in the enjoyment of a clean and wholesome social life. Intimacy of contact between student and instructor in the class- room and on the campus, free interchange of views, sincerity and frankness in discussion, daily practise in community living and thinking, increased facility in solving present-day problems of our changing world-order, above all, the love and practise of truth, these make up life at Ohio Wesleyan. We utilize and appreciate the wealth of the past. We strive to understand the complicated and significant present. But our final aim is that the whole of human and social life shall embody the divine ideal as revealed in Christ. A woman of dignity and poise, of physical charm and beauty, young in spirit as in years, of unusual good sense and sincere piety, we looked to her with confidence to work out a large programme for the women of the Wesleyan that is to be. Alas! that Death should have intervened be- fore that programme had been more than sketched! The club this year has been no exception to the precedent set by the clubs of previous years, and under the able directorship of Guy E. McLean has attained a degree of excellence seldom reached by a college club. Several trips have been taken this year at vaca- tion times, and at each appearance David Craig, Leader. the club has been received with great enthusiasm by large audi- ences. This year the Ohio Wesleyan Glee Club was instrumental in forming an association of all the College Glee Clubs in Ohio. Late this Spring a competitive contest will be held in Memorial Hall in Columbus when the winning club will be awarded a cup for its ex- cellence in group singing. It is hoped that at this competition the Ohio Wesleyan Glee Club will maintain the reputation it has established among the college glee clubs of the state. Now that women ' s sororities have been established at Wesleyan it fills a special need in that it serves as a bond in per- petuating the celebrated spirit of dear old Monnett. This year the fifty girls that were taken into Clio demonstrated true ability in the annual prep show, A Pan-Hel Revue. ATHENAEUM LITERARY SOCIETY Since 18 7 Athenaeum has steadily grown in membership until at the present time the wearers of the star and crescent number some two hundred and fifty. This year the society has taken active part filling the social life of the co-eds at Monnett, starting off with an unusualh successful Inaugural Reception and continuing with various other social events throughout the year. The height of all activities of the society comes during the an- nual rushing and bidding season which this year culminated in the unique prep show Gypped, presented by the preps of ' 25. Heretofore all the women of the L ' niversity were members of the Association, but now the women winning loo points in sports constitute the active members of the ' . A. A., the others thus being associate members. ( This plan has made for greater enthusiasm and concentrated int erests to the furtherance of the standards of women ' s athletics. The spring track tournament was supported with unusual in- terest. The previous records were surpassed and especially were we proud to have the relay team of ' 23 tie the Ail-American record for the 220 yard relay, the time being 28 seconds. All the classes enter the swimming meet, the Junior nymphs excelling the other minnows. In the fall the class of ' 24 again claimed the Hockey Championship for the season. The inter-class Basketball games revealed the excellent skill and technique. By defeating Ohio State twice during tlie past season, the Ohio Wesleyan Gym Team is acknowledged to have reaped champion- ship honors in the Ohio Conference for Ohio Wesleyan. Shortly after Ohio Wesleyan first defeated Ohio State, the University of Indiana also handed the Columbus gymnasts the short end of a close score. Membership in this honorary Fraternity of physical education is conferred upon those who have shown by their performance in leaders corps work that they merit the honor. The leaders corps is composed of men picked from the gymnasium classes. Allan Bates, chosen this year as the representa- tive Gamma Phi, has been high point man in every gym meet which Ohio Wesleyan has participated in this year. He is the par of Ohio conference gymnasts. 166 Allan Bates Captain Smith 167 Coaching Staff Doc Welch Coach Gauthier Paul White CHAMPIONSHIP CLAIMS Defeating all comers in the Ohio Conference in a schedule in which were represented the best teams in the state, Ohio Wesleyan ' s stellar aggregation of gridiron performers won for themselves in the past season the championship title of the Ohio Conference. Added laurels accrued to the team thru the defeat of the strong Michigan Aggie team at Lansing and the close contest with Ohio State which unfortunately ended with the score 5-0 in favor of Ohio State. All question of the right of Ohio Wesleyan to the conference title was banished by the refusal of Oberlin to accept the challenge to play a post season game to decide all possible question in the matter. Oberlin also finished the season with an average of i.ooo in the percentage column. However she played only five games and hers chedule was not nearly as representative as was Ohio Wesleyan ' s. The entire line from end to end and three of the backfield of the past season ' s squad received mention for All Ohio honors. The majority of the sport writers thruout the state were unanimous in placing Captain Smith, Captain-elect Winters, Thomson, Bal- linger and Turney on their first string selections. In selecting an All-Western team, Walter Eckersoll mentioned Winters and Smith as especially deserving of notice for their great work thruout the season. OTTERBEIN On September 30 the fall of Otterbein warriors 13-0 in the first game of the season served as a baneful augury for all other Ohio conference teams that Coach Gauthier ' s scrapping sky pilots formed a machine of Western Conference formidibility. Using five plays, the Delaware team easily outplayed the United Brethren. Winters made the first touchdown from the 13 yard Hne. A pass, Snouffer to Morrissey made the second. Wesleyan made eight first downs to Otterbeins four. Staten kicked goal. 169 Sonny Winters OHIO STATE Ohio State won the second game on the schedule although the Red and Black defence prevented the Scarlet and Gray from scoring a single touchdown. A safety and a goal kick accounted for the score of Wilce ' s men. Both teams came close to making a touch- down during the game. Ohio State was held for downs on their seven yard line while Ohio Wesleyan ' s big opportunity came just before the game ended when Smith blocked Workman ' s punt and Winters carried the ball to Ohio State ' s six yard line on two end runs. 170 Sax Sacksteder OHIO NORTHERN Playing with a fighting punch that would not be denied, the Red and Black squad next downed Ohio Northern 14-0 at Ada. Wesleyan ' s first score came early in the second quarter, when Winters passed 15 yards to Knachel who ran ten yards for a touchdown. In the last quarter Sacksteder slipped through a broken field for a second touchdown. Winters place kicked in each case for extra points. The Wesleyan goal was never seriously threatened. Two full teams were used by Coach Gauthier and several substitutes were made for injured first and second stringers. N V . 171 ' Ken Ballinger CINCINNATI Another step toward the acquisition of the 1922 football laurels was the defeat of the University of Cincinnati by a score of 14-7. Both teams were out for blood and the winner was not settled until the final whistle blew. Early in the second quarter Snouifer inter- cepted a Cincinnati pass and ran 70 yards for the first score. In the third Winters scored on a thirteen yard end run. Winters kicked both goals. 172 ' Staty Staten WITTENBERG Ohio Wesleyan thundered into full view on the horizon of the Ohio Conference honor road when a vicious whirlwind attack put Wittenberg away 27-6. Fleet Wesleyan backfield men tore around Godfrey ' s sentinels for successive end runs and line plunge gains. A record-breaking crowd howled themselves hoarse as the Gauthier- men dazzled the Tigers of the West with their brilliant playing. Staten ' s 105 yard run for the record run of the year was the out- standing feature of the game. This was the longest scoring run made in the United States in an intercollegiate contest during the 1922 season. 20 and 30 yard passes were completed with ease while Winters, Turney, and Sacksteder each scored touchdowns. U 173 Bob Thomson MIAMI Fighting every minute of the play, Miami ' s football eleven went down to a 6-0 defeat before the smashing attack of Ohio Wes- leyan ' s backfield. Edwards Field was packed as the largest home- coming crowd ever assembled at the Sulphur Spring School yelled themselves speechless over the triumph of their Alma Mater. Goals from placement by Turney and Winters accounted for the Red and Black tallies. In the last quarter Sonny Winters, crippled still from the Wittenburg battle, was thrown into the fight and his ever accurate toe put over the second goal from the twenty-five yard line. 174 ' Dick MacCrackex -MICHIGAN AGGIE Although outweighed in both line and backfield, Coach Gauth- ier ' s fighting gridders defeated the strong Michigan Agricultural College contingent in a unique game 9-6. Outplaying their oppon- ents throughout the first quarter, and the entire second half, the defenders of the Red and Black marched successfulh- down the field to within striking distance of the Aggie goal where Ted Turney ' s educated toe booted three well placed field goals across the Aggie goal. 175 Ammie Amrhein CASE Capping the past successes of the season, Captain Smith ' s co- horts accomplished the ambition of seven seasons when they re- venged all previous defeats by wallopping Case 65-0 in a pathetic game during which Coach Canfield of Case accused Coach Gauthier of trying to run up a score. Complying with his rebuke the former Ail-American withdrew his third team from the field, and substi- tuted the first string. After the stellar players had finished a drive they made four touchdowns in about as many minutes. i 176 Eddie Knachel Jimmie Roberts DENISON Battling desperately in the final contest of the season, Ohio esleyan ' s football warriors wrested victory from Denison ' s Big Red team on Deed ' s Field, Granville, by a score of 14-13. With the score lyj against the Gauthiermen and four minutes to play. Eddie Knachel made his miracle play and scooped up a fumble made by Denison, and sprinted thirty yards for a touchdown, tying the score. Ted Turney ' s ever reliable boot kicked goal for the extra point, placing his team in the lead. Denison ' s last efforts were futile, and_ Ohio Wesleyan had won her claim to the championship of the Ohio Conference. FRESHMAN FOOTBALL A good share of the credit for the success of the past football season is due to the Freshman team. All through the season they furnished the opposition for the varsity and gave a good account of themselves. Their work was hard, for in addition to taking the knocks of the varsity every week, they had to master a differ- ent style of football and new plays as used by the next opponent. The strongest point of the Frosh was their line, for with the ex- ception of the center, there were two good men available for every position. The Backfield was not so strong as the forward wall but the men worked hard and kept the varsity humping to stop them. The morale of the team was splendid and the men did what they were told by Coach Van Alstyne. Jay Winters was the captain and as quarterback proved the best of the backs at mastering and executing the new plays handed out each week. Turney, Sauls, Rosser and Pearce were the other regular backs. The line from end to end was: Crouse, Methmeyer, Tilton, Sharp, Frump, Kindig, and Barenbrugge. These men however frequently gave way to the others who were continually fighting for the positions. One of the strong features of the team was its abundance of good substitutes. Union 18 Wesleyan 24 Antioch 28 180 1923 Basketball Season Ineligibility of several members of the squad, precipitated by the action of the Ohio Conference, spelled the difference for the Ohio esleyan basketball team between another sensational success in this field of intercollegiate activity and the position of runner up for the title. A inning five out of nine con- ference games played, the Red and Black finished the race for honors in the cage game with an average of .555. Captain A [oth- er George Hubbard, the only seasoned veteran on the squad, led his team mates t o several victories in games outside of the Ohio Conference. The absence of Staten, Turney, and Freigau meant a loss to the squad that was irre- parable. The season was opened with a spectacular display of midseason form on the part of the Red and Black teamsters that enabled them to easily vanquish in quick succession St. Xavier, Otterbein, Ohio Northern and Antioch. The strong Independent team from Ports- rnouth also went down to defeat before Captain Hubbard ' s aggrega- tion during a barnstorming trip taken during the Christmas holidays. A midseason slump, however, accounted for the loss of several succeeding_ games. The illness of Thomson left the guard position to be filled. His return to the game was noticed immediately on the scoreboard. After the loss of the Alarietta game on February 22nd, the team pulled itself together and returned to the floor in the next game to defeat Ohio Northern for the second time of the season. Following this exhibition of superb passing and accurate basket shooting, the squad made ready to take on their formidable opponent from Alliance in the last game of the season. Mt. Union had beaten the Red and Black 24-22 in the longest basket- ball game on record. Five overtime periods finally gave the lucky tally to Alt. Union that spelled victory for their college. Remembering this former defeat Coach ' an Alstyne ' s proteges came back at the end of the season and easily won from Alt. Union 23-18. L AGER Thomso A Coach Van Alstvne 181 A Captain Mother Hubbard has now completed his third year as a regular varsity guard and has acquitted himself with glory. He was the mainstay of defence and the main- spring of the team-work and was altogether an ideal leader of his men. He made a guard position on the third All-Ohio Team. Porky Crimm, another sophomore, had the fight and spirit but needs more experience before he will be a finished player. Lee Blanchard got the first call for center and notwithstanding his inexperience played a bang-up game. Lee has two more seasons in which to show his wares for the Red and Black. 182 Vic Kolb held down the other for- ward position until his illness late in the season. His fight and ability to locate the loop with consistency on free throws added materially to the success of the team. Vic should go big the next two years. ' Bob Thomson exhibited the same fighting spirit that he showed on the football field, and though handi- capped by a bad k nee contracted during the football season and an illness in the middle of the season he came through in fine style and made a fit running mate for Mother. Bob has another season to show for Wesleyan. Bill LeSourd was another sopho- more who made the team this year. His floorwork and his steadiness made him an extremely valuable man to the team. Bill ' s basketball future should be full of glory. K 183 ' Eddie Knachel was the all-round man of the squad. No matter in what position he played, Eddie was thoroughly at home, and was always a thorn in the side of the opposition. Eddie will be heard from in the next two years. ' Bob Kohn has played his last game for the Red and Black. Whenever the game was going slowly Bob could be depended upon to inject some pep into the play. Hoxest Johx Sincox is another of our departing heroes. Out of the six meets in which Wesleyan took part she was able to win but one. The failure of this year was es- pecially noticeable after the great success of last year. The gradua- tion of King, the premier dash man of the state the preceding year, left an unfillable place in the team and those points that he used to garner so regularly were woefully lacking. However under the able tutelage of Coach Ewing and the splendid example and leadership of Captain Bell the team struggled on through the disastrous season with a never say die spirit. The spirit and morale of the men was fine but they were trying to do the impossible and the result was such as usually follows such an attempt. We have this one consolation. Most of the men who showed ability will be back in school next year. In the person of Artie Dorner we were blest with a con- sistent point winner. He was the high score of the year gathering a total of ■]■] points. Another Old Reliable was Ray Kale, a sophomore, who turned in his quota of points in the distance events as regularly as the sun rises and sets. The rest of the team tried their hardest and came through in the best style that could be ex- pected. The main trouble seemed to be that no amount of trying could make up for the defects which experience alone can eliminate. CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP hile the Ohio Wesleyan football warriors were battling on Deeds field, the Red and Black distance runners were braveing the biting cold in the annual Ohio Conference cross country meet. Ohio esleyan runners finished first in competition with nine other schools including the second team from Ohio State. Of 45 men who started the race. Captain Kale was the first to cross the tape. Helms finished third and Domigan sixth. This victory gave Ohio Wesleyan unquestioned supremacy in this field and added a third conference title to the athletic laurels of the past. 187 ' f OHIO V BSLELY VN A Teeter came thru the season with a record of two first places, one second place, and a fifth place in the Big Six meet in the pole vault event. Teeter was one of the most formidable factors in the success of the Ohio Wesleyan team. Kestle preferred the 220 and relay work. Altho the 1922 season was his first experi- ence on the varsity he gave his opposition an exhibition of speed that was hard to beat. DoRXER starred as the most spectacular performer on the entire squad. Qualifying in several meets as high point man, and generally sure of first places in the hurdle events, Dorner won renown as an artist in these events. 188 Kale was responsible for Ohio Wesleyan ' s only first place in the Big Six meet. Coach Ewing was assured of either a first or a second place in any competition when he entered Kale for his favorite run of the mile or his second choice, the two mile. Roberts showed up as a dependable 440 man. Altho neither spectacular nor sensa- tional in form he covered the ground in fast time and turned in his quota of top places. Captain Bell added to his established renown as a track performer when he set up a new record for the half mile at Deni- son. ' inning the conference title with a record of nine games won and one lost, Captain Boyher ' s squad developed into a team of hitters as well as fielders who knew the science of baseball and how to apply it in practice. At the beginning of the season it was evident that the Ohio Wesleyan machine was headed for the top of the conference percentage column. With Coffield on the mound, Sacksteder behind the plate, Freigau roaming around shorts top, and Boyher, Staten and Winters on the bags, the opposing Conference nines had a tough time registering even a single hit. The outfield was covered to perfection by Smith at center field, Hubbard at right field, and Aluth at center field. When Smith became ineligible later in the season, Wright ably took his place and also proved himself capable of relieving Coffield on the mound. The hesitation and errors noticeable at the beginning of the season soon disappeared and the opposing teams seemed helpless before the steady hitting, fast accurate hurling, and splendid fielding of the Ohio Wesleyan nine. Manager Beetham Coach Van . lstyne 193 t George Staten ' Heavy Coffield Winning a virtual victory over Ohio States baseball nine, the Red and Black squad stepped off on the right foot when led by Captain Bohyer, they demonstrated their ability by leading Ohio State 4-3 at the end of the fourth inning when the game was called on account of rain. The Buckeyes used two pitchers in a futile attempt to offset the slugging aggregation from Delaware; Sack- steder bingled out two hits and showed up as a comer in this, the season opener. In a slow game, Wooster yielded to the Vanmen in the second game of the season on the Wooster diamond. The Red and Black experienced no trouble in running the score up to 15-1 during the conflict. Sacksteder led with a homer in the first inning. Hubbard and Staten however, followed this lead and each turned in three hits for the home team. 194 OHIO ' VJ E SLE YvMS t ' ' Johnny Muth I I Sax Sacksteder Meeting Ohio State in a return game in the third conflict of the season, the Delaware aggregation found their opponents a more formidable machine than they had been on the previous occasion. Statens starred with a homer. Smith followed up the rally with a twobagger, but even this failed to supply the winning trick and the Columbus team bagged the long end of a 12-7 score. This was the first time that an Ohio State team had beaten a team coached by Coach ' an Alstyne. Miami invaded Delaware the next week end and altho primed for a victory, fell hopelessly before the hard hitting Methodists 10-3. CofReld allowed only six hits while Bohyer made second sack on two line drives thru the Big Red infield. W 195 Ty Freigau Mose Wright made his debut in the gardens at Oberhn where the Ohio Wesleyan representatives fought thru for a 5-4 victory. The game was fiercely contested but the superior hitting abihty and the accurate pegging of the Ohio Wesleyan infield finally won out over the luck of the up state machine. Ohio Wesleyan ' s men had just started a rally that promised an overwhelming victory when the game with Ohio Northern on Edwards Field was called on account of darkness, giving the local team a margin of one point in a 3-2 victory. Ohio Northern had opened the game with a batting fest and scored two runs in the first frame. 196 Dewey Boyher ' Mother Hubbard Otterbein again fell before the victorious ' anmen when the Red and Black representatives invaded the Otterbein diamond and returned to Delaware with the winning score of 16-1. Bohyer and Freigau each accounted for a homer. Staten featured with four runs to his credit. Denison subsequently fell before the heavy sluggers on the Red and Black team. These two victories definitely located honors at the top of the Conference for the local nine. Otterbein invaded Edwards Field for a good practice game for the local representatives and at no time endangered the Red and Black. A score of 7-0 told the story at the end of the ninth. Cof- field hurled with a wicked peg while the infield of the home team worked with machine-like precision. The first Conference defeat of the season was suffered at the hands of Ohio Northern on the Ada field. A temporary slump seemed to account for the 4-3 victory acquired by the Adainins. Freigau knocked out a homer and Aluth disported himself of the bases but the old winning punch seemed to be lacking. 197 Varsity Tennis Team A Cole played with Savage, making a combination that was hard to beat. Their victory for the Red and Black in the Ohio Conference tourney at Columbus made them runners up for conference honors. KoHN accounted well for himself throut the entire season. Playing a fast flashy game he generally outplayed his opponent and could be relied upon for spectacular playing. % K McKav played a brilliant game at intervals altho his work was consistently superior thruout the season. His presence on the court accounted for several victories for the Red and Black. Savage showed up best in the single contests. Nichols, Chief Justice Ohio Supreme Court. From this Chapter 209 210 Delta Alpha Pi was organized at Ohio Wesleyan University in 1919, under the name of Kappa Sigma Pi. In 1920 a second chapter of the organization was initiated at the Ohio State Univer- sity. In January of 1923 a complete reorganization took place, resulting in making the fraternity a national one. Chapters are now being organized in several middle western universities. Delta Alpha Pi has as one of its aims the ideal of excellency in scholarship. The other activities of college life have not been neg- lected, however. The majority of its alumni are still in graduate schools. Eight are at present continuing their studies at Boston University. The first president, Carl Clungston, is teaching at a missionary school in Iquique, Chile. The pin of the fraternity is a cross and shield, the latter bearing the letters Delta Alpha Pi and crossed swords. It recognizes that some social life is indis- pensible for every man at Wesleyan. At present there are fifty-two members of the Commons, and sixteen of these live in the home of the group on West William street.
