Lacking what the University officials feel to be adequate academic preparation, freshmen are often required to take subjects which will give them the proper background for University work. THE COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES Oldest of the seven colleges at Ohio University is the College of Arts and Sciences. Comprising fifteen departments of the university and with a teaching staff of seventy- seven members lone-half of those in the University this college hos enrolled in its ranks 25 r. of the upper classmen. Said Dean Gam- ertsfelder in commenting upon its aims and objectives, The College of Arts and Sciences aims primarily to offer opportunities for what is commonly called a liberal education in contrast with professional or vocational training provided by other colleges. Phi Beta Kappa, highest of scholastic honorories, demands that 80% of the pros- pective member ' s studies be pursued in this college.
