.-..e.-.-f- UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT GOVERNMENT 1t coutd be said that the Undergraduate Stu- dent Government of Ohio State University is the mainstream of student politics on Ohio. And that would not be far from the truth. It is. Undergraduate Student Government began in 1962, after a re-organization was formed to more effectively govern student life at Ohio State. Prior to 1962, there was a Student Sen- ate that was elected by the Student Body ac- cording to living areas and various student or- ganizations. The President and Vice-President of the Student Body were elected by the Sen- ate members and not by a campus-wide elec- tion. There was no cabinet. The Student Senate found itself limited in its ability to get major projects initiated or com- pleted and came under attack from various student organizations. It was labeled ineffec- tive and the cause of the trouble was not put 30 BELOW: The Chief Justice of University Court gives the oath of office to USC president-elect Paul Larue. The Student Senate underwent its first seri- ous constitution! revision and became what is today Undergraduate Student Government. The transformation was dramatic, changing the election of the President and Vice-Presi- dent to a campus-wide ballot. For the first time, the President and Vice-President were elected by the student body. A cabinet for the President was created. Thus the new Under- graduate Student Government had an execu- tive branch to initiate and enforce projects that were approved by the Student Senate. In 1967, a second constitutional revision took place. The 15 Senate seats became 25, elimi- nating some student organizations and adding college area representation. The name changed from the Student Senate to the Stu-
