M iii :3 $ ' --r m H History will best judge them during the years Of misfortune and hardship when they made the insurmountable burdens of higher education seem at least bearable. And they shall be judged well, for the wisdom and style at which the high office upheld the largest univer- sity the nation has ever known. Harold Enarson approached his work diligently, his entire character keyed to action and achievement. It was not the old uGive rem Hell, Harry style, nor did his character warrant a bronzed plate on his desk which could have read ttThe Bucks Stop Here. His eloquence on the stump was surpassed oniy by his com- . passion for the common good. Unlike his predecessors, it was not a rare occasion to see him minglingiwith students. He could be seen eating with, talking to, even entertaining them, all the while with a smile that was unavoid- ably contagious. His wit was urbane, B 1i rat'- containing cadence of humor timely enough to catch one off guard, to dig deeply into the human psyche at any- time, anyplace. The effect at the very least, was the capture of smiles from his audience, and at the most, an outburst of uncontrollable laughter. Harold Enarson summed up his great reservoir of personal humor in the most pressing of circumstances. But it was not his way to temporarily find refuge from crushing responsibility. Humor was his greatest weapon. And it was this weap- on which refiected heartfelt security and inspired the loyalty of his command. Audrey Enarson rode the crest of these responsibilities. And more often than not, was intimately involved with her husbandis crisis. For Ohio State had an uncanny ability to falter the weight of her burdens on an overworked presi- dent. But not only did the two confront these burdens over the years, but con- Gov. Rhodes and President Enarson. sistently sought the challenges of in- creased greatness and prosperity for OSU. And prosper it did. During the term of their office which spanned the 705, the university grew at an amazing rate. Change was visible where it hadn't been visible before. Only five years ago. the Enarsons had come to a meeting of the Student Council of University College held in Dean Mountis living room. The numbers of council members did not overwhelm them. The two Enarsons seemed to blend in naturally with all the noise, food, drinks, clanging dishes and dropping silverware. Questions were tossed among members in the Enarsonsi effort to know everyone. tiWhat's your name? CAP area? What do you want to major in? Tidbits of information were exchanged for two hours until the coun- cil members retired to their own circle to begin the meeting. As the Enarsons pre- pared to leave, I approached them to ask about changes in the academic cur- riculum. iiWhy the increased amount of courses? And what had happened to some of the old courses that I had planned to take? Enarson and Vice President Mondale. President Enarson straightened the collar on his overcoat and turned to face me. iiThe university is changing because the world is changing, he said. iiChange is the inevitability of life. One must cope with the inevitability of change. The Enarsons began their long adven- ture nine years ago, packed and ready to leave Cleveland State to tackle the greater giant. They took office in the most bewildering of times. Violence and hatred had ripped the campus. They served in an arena of divided ideology lL to Rt Woody Hayes, Pres. Ford, Pres. Enarson, J. Edward Weaver. and extreme consternation. Yet it was not their way to force solutions, but to find them, with patience nobly born of wisdom and not pacifism. They had re- defined the purpose of students caught up in the llWar Generation . And one may historically note as the Vietnam War swelled in 1972, Ohio State had reasonable calm while other major uni- versities still suffered the albatross of vio- lent confrontation. Their realism was tempered by hope, and it was this hope for the future which inspired the seeds of idealism and made real the dreams that were yesterday, only dreams. it was not their fate that they came here but ours. Sometime, long ago, there must have been premo- nition to the crossroads we would take in the turbulent seventies. They created an ideal and charted the course toward the fulfillment of that ideal. The Enarsons have gone now, having fulfilled their purpose, yet with still much left to be done. The torch should not only be car- ried by their successors but by us all. If higher education is to sruvive, all must have the same drive and passion for ex- 8 Enarson with Mu-Lan Hsu. cellence as they brought once upon a time. It is grievous to reflect on an era gone by. I can walk across the oval to a windy autumn morning and reflect on the changing color of leaves falling about me. Man VS Machine. 29 .-..e.-.-f- UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT GOVERNMENT 1t coutd be said that the Undergraduate Stu- dent Government of Ohio State University is the mainstream of student politics on Ohio. And that would not be far from the truth. It is. Undergraduate Student Government began in 1962, after a re-organization was formed to more effectively govern student life at Ohio State. Prior to 1962, there was a Student Sen- ate that was elected by the Student Body ac- cording to living areas and various student or- ganizations. The President and Vice-President of the Student Body were elected by the Sen- ate members and not by a campus-wide elec- tion. There was no cabinet. The Student Senate found itself limited in its ability to get major projects initiated or com- pleted and came under attack from various student organizations. The Student Senate underwent its first seri- ous constitution! revision and became what is today Undergraduate Student Government. The transformation was dramatic, changing the election of the President and Vice-Presi- dent to a campus-wide ballot. For the first time, the President and Vice-President were elected by the student body. A cabinet for the President was created. Thus the new Under- graduate Student Government had an execu- tive branch to initiate and enforce projects that were approved by the Student Senate. In 1967, a second constitutional revision took place. The 15 Senate seats became 25, elimi- nating some student organizations and adding college area representation. A few years later, the 25 As- sembly seats officially became a part of Univer- sity Senate. In 1970, Ohio State University was torn by riot and dissension. New anti-war organiza- tions had sprung up overnight. Although few USG members involved themselves in the ri- ots, 1970 USG President Jerome Friedman had been accused of minor involvement by the Columbus police, although no evidence was found to support the accusation against him. However, the USO 0f the 7015 held a radical overtone which continued through the entire decade. In 1978, a conservative coalition began in USG to oust the liberal element in control. USG involved itself in radical activities such as the May 4th Coalition and liberal policies such as cutting of university aid to corporations with activity in South Africa. USC in 1977 con- demned Israel and calIed for and copied the UN Resolution, equating uZionism as Racism. USC supported and funded student organiza- tions that actively created and stirred violence on campus. In 1978, USG's conservative coalition began a wave of criticism in the funding procedures of USC. USGs funding came under attack by' its members and by the press. By 1980, USC President Malcolm Taaffe returned the massive task of funding organizations to the Council on Student Affairs. New procedures were finally laid for the funding of student organizations, although even today, some work still needs doing. Throughout the 7015, scandals rocked Un- dergraduate Student Government. In 1976, USG President Chris Kalis missed impeachment 31 proceedings by one vote in the Student As- sembly for allegedly making long distance phone calls that USG had paid for and faced another charge of stealing and selling USG property. Although he was not impeached and finished his term, he was later arrested by Co- lumbus police on similar charges. Larry Pollack, 1977 Greek Representative to USC and presidential aspirant, was brought to University Court on a charge of violating elec- tion by-Iaws in his re-election bid as Greek Representative. He was found innocent and subsequently won the election. In 1978, USO donated $300.00 toward a bus ride to Kent State. Kent State was constructing a gymnasium on the sight where four students died May 4, 1970. Acting on a tip from an informant at Kent, USG held an executive closed session to discuss the possibility of vio- lence planned at the Kent State demonstra- tion. USG cancelled its support of the bus ride and never issued the money to the May 4th Coalition. The Lantern blasted USO for the closed executive session. USG had violated two laws, the first being the Ohio xSunshine! Law, which barred closed public sessions, and the second being its own constitution. After the funds had been authorized by the Student Assembly, it could only be withdrawn from the May 4th Coalition by the Student Assembly. The executive branch had no right to act on its own authority. Vice President Tojo Miclea said in a strong public statement, IIWe had to act decisively on ethical and moral grounds, not the legal issue. Lives may be at stake. Peo- pIe may be hurt. A week later, the May 4th Coalition stormed the gymnasium site, causing some damage. Police arrested various demon- strators, and some were injured. The Student Assembly at Ohio State and the Lantern dropped the heavy criticism and the issue died. A few months later, in Jan. of 1978, USG President Dana Lee resigned due to health rea- sons. MicIea became president. The foliowing year, USG President Paul Zock came under attack for indecisiveness and inac- tion involving violence upon OSU students in south campus bars. USG has had many successions in the past and each administration now promises some- thing old and something new. In 1979, USS under the direction of Tom Gormley, eliminat- ed Saturday finals at Ohio State. Also, in 1979 USG led by Nancy Taglione, successfully froze tuition throughout Ohio. In 1980, USG sayec the Citizen's Crime Reporting Project tCCRP by successfully raising $100,000.00 from Co' Iumbus City Council and Ohio State University USG resurrected the OSU yearbook and is stil published today. The Greeks were re-admitted to University Senate by USG after being excluded by USG in the early 705. USC had caught up with the 803. All state universities have student govern- ments which depend on USG for political ac- tion because of OSU's unique location in Co- lumbus. The Undergraduate Student Govern- ment of the 19803 must be stronger than those of the past. Most of USGs major suc- cesses have occurred in the last few years. It has begun to show its strength. The Ohio Staters were founded in 1933 by a coalition of students, faculty, and administra- tors. It was incorporated in 1935 as a non- profit service organization. The purpose of the Staters is to organize student efforts to engage in activities which will promote the welfare of Ohio State University and enhance its prestige. Staters can be found anywhere, doing just about anything. if you have ever seen students with buckets and brushes cleaning William Ox- ley Thompson, they were Ohio Staters. If you have received seat cushions for home football games, the Ohio Staters got them for you. If you had ever taken a bus ride to the Ohio State-Michigan game in Michigan, the Ohio Staters arranged it. If you had ever watched the Wheelchair Olympics at Ohio State, the Staters did it. If you ever sat on the South Oval to watch the Renaissance Festival week, that was the Ohio Staters too. Ever walk down Buckeye Grove? Yup, the Staters did that too. Now, all you graduates look at your degree. See the Universityis crest? Staters. If thatis not enough, the Ohio Staters cre- ated and formed the Block 0 section at all Ohio State home football games. And another thing, near rioting after Ohio State-Michigan games resulted in action by the Ohio Staters to 33 PRESENTING . . . THE . . . The Staters in one of their zanier gatherings. form the OSU Sportsmanship Council. Their effort has been very successful, as evident in the 1980 Ohio State-Michigan game. The Ohio Staters have succeeded in raising the con- sciousness of OSU students where other orga- nizations have failed. And you thought they only did the Money- bag! They obviously do more. They even brought braille maps of campus to Ohio Stateis blind students. Other projects include campus bicycle air pumps and parking garages, Bicycle Safety Day, Ohio Skater Day and the Health Fair. Not everyone can be an Ohio Stater. Mem- bership is selective and is decided among the Ohio Staters. Its organization resembles that of a fraternity, but is not. The difference is that while fraternities and sororities occupy their time with activities with projects to benefit their respective houses and Greek system, the OHIO STATERS, INC!!! Ohio Staters promote their time with projects which will benefit the entire student body. The Ohio Staters are somewhat a cross breed be- tween Undergraduate Student Government and the Greeks. Ohio Staters occupy positions of leadership throughout the student body at OSU. There are Staters on dorm councils, and campus associations, in fraternities and sorori- ties, as heads of student organizations and oc- cupying important positions in Undergraduate Student Government. And it is the Ohio Staters who produce and sponsor the Under- graduate Leadership Awards in the spring. In order to give out awards, an awards com- mittee is formed and applications for the award are distributed throughout the campus. Persons may nominate themselves for these awards by picking up and filling out an applica- tion, then turn it into the Office of Student Life in the Ohio Union. The awards committee then must decide from among the applicants who shall win an award. The award given for Outstanding Leader- ship is called the uBuckeye Awardf formaily the Student Leader Award, and there are nu- merous other awards. There are the Outstand- ing Senior Awards, given to a member of graduating seniors in the spring, and there are the Outstanding Residence Hall Senior Awards, given from approximately 6 to 8 sen- iors every year. Honoraries of every rank induct members at the Undergraduate Leadership Awards. These honoraries are iiChimes, xtBucket and Dip- per, Romophos tsophomore backwardsi, iiMirrors, and iiSphinxf the Greek senior hon- orary. Students inducted into these organiza- tions are honored for their scholastic achieve- ments throughout their college career. The principal problem behind giving awards for leadership is determining what leadership is, and which persons have best demonstrated that quality while enrolled as a student at Ohio State University. The range of applicants varies, rich and poor, black and white, young and old. And awards are given in this same range, as the awards committee tackles the tough problem of determining who the iiOutstanding leaders are. While the awards committee has been fairly accurate in choosing the best for the awards, they have been subject to some criti- cism when the awards committee members give themselves a leadership award. The argu- ment of conflict of interest was rebuffed by past committee members, claiming that the very reason they were chosen to be on the awards committee was to judge leadership. And only those chosen for the committee had to have displayed those qualities in order to qualify for the job. A study on the subject found that most committee members were leaders of top student organizations, and would have received the leadership awards anyway. Marty Brian is in the supine position. the leadership awards. How do you judge a leader and hisXher capacity to lead? Leadership is defined in every dictionary as iithe ability to go before . . . to show the way? While this definition is broad and universally accepted, it does not specifically cover the fine points of iihow to lead, which is the central theme of leadership. Thus, a specific definition of leader- ship is nearly impossible. But leadership can be measured within oneis own conscience, the motivating factor of ones own actions which gives one an ability to lead. Leadership means forsaking oneself and ones own goals for the sake of others. Leader- ship is a social awareness. It is the ability to stand tall in the rising tide of opposition when 35 STATER STRATEGY you are right, and the ability to admit wrong when you are clearly wrong. True leaders do not occupy committees or organizations and fail to interact. True leaders do not take credit for projects they really failed to do. True leaders do not stuff resumes. In- stead they play down their personal accom- plishments of their peers. Leaders recognize talent without envy, and use their own talents for others, not for recognition or for one's perd sonal gain. The leader molds potential from the led into reality. I frh'l The Ohio Staters face the omnious task of recognizing those with true leadership abilities through efforts they put forth to serve the student body here at Ohio State. Meanwhile, the Staters will continue in the sponsorship and initiation of activities for the university. It would be well worth the time for students to do like- wrse. 3K. 37 CAMPUS MEDIA FIRST ROW tL to Rl; Mark Scott, Phil Swayne, Kim Herouvis, Curt Boster. SECOND ROW: John Hood, Tony Shockley, Mike Ossing, Becky Wendler, Patsy Bahner. WOSR is the only full-time radio staff made up entirely of Ohio State students. Behind the scenes are a professional group of young peo- ple operating production, advertising, and pro- gramming. Presently, the station operates year-round, including summer. WOSR operates on a fre- quency of 540 AM and 99.9 FM. lt broadcasts to all dorms and commons and recently added Warner AMEX cable FM service. The stations general manager, Mike Ossing, while supervising operations at WOSR, is also operations assistant at WOSU. His radio show can be heard on Saturday mornings from 7 - am. to 12 noon. Ossing plans to work in man- agement in either radio or television after he graduates. He currently has 2V2 years of broad- casting experience and as an OSU teaching 33 assistant, has instructed television production at Ohio State. His major is CommunicationsX Mass Media BA and has been floor director for WOSU-TV Channel 34. WOSR broadcasts more new music than any radio station in central Ohio and provides the best radio experience a student can get. WOSR is perhaps the best outlet for progres- sive music and radio. The stations music library is mostly album-oriented rock lAORl or pro- gressive rock and roll, although one can occa- sionally hear a Dan Fogelburg song or a nostal- gic James Taylor tune. The station first began in autumn 1971, al- though campus radio had been on campus for some 20-25 years. Prior to WOSR, the campus radio station was WMRH, which broadcasted from Derby Hall. WOSRls extra-curricular campus activities were varied, and it was not unusual for past station managers to hold a campus-mobile rock show, whether at the Drake Union or on the South Oval. WOSR had broadcast many past USG presidential-vice presidential debates to the campus area. The future holds more of these debates, many of them heated confron- tations which serve more to entertain than in- form. The station also broadcasts taIk-shows and discussions with caIl-in audience participation. In the future, Ossing plans to increase adver- tising income and attempt to broadcast lover the air wavesl FM. WOSRls future will rest on its ability to capture mass audience appeal from its programming format of album-orienti ed rock and progressive new music, as well as additional funds needed to keep the station operating at full-strength as it does now. So, as WOSR moves to the future, its crew 40 can look back on accomplishment and tri- umph. Just ask Chris Solie. Solie was WOSR'S 1979-80 general manager. She now can be heard broadcasting the news on 92X-FM. WOSR does more than entertain. mmmm th . 41 ... .i 4- The Greek System is as old as Ohio State itself. The first fraternity at OSU, Phi Gamma Delta, had risen up in the 1870's. Fraternities were iisecret orders back in the old days, with strange rituals and symbols based on mystic origins. Phi Gamma Delta adopted a skull and crossbones as their official crest. Later, Phi Gamma Delta would change their crest to what it is today. Also in the 18703, another fraternity arrived on campus - Phi Kappa Psi. In 1880, both Phi 42 Kappa Psi and Phi Gamma Delta would togeth- er publish the first Ohio State University year- book entitled iiThe Makio. The Makio is really iiMA-KIO and is Japanese for iiMagic Mirror. The origin of why the two fraternities named it is unclear, but is beiieved that during the 1870's an OSU faculty member visited Japan and re- turned to the United States with much enthusi- asm for the then existing Japanese dynasties which ruled. The first yearbook published was very small, very few pages, had no photos, and listed all graduating seniors at Ohio State in 1880. lfs original fogo was a skull and crossbones. There was no yearbook published in 1881, then in 1882, both fraternities again re-published the MAKIO. In 1883, an apparent rivalry between the two fraternities resulted in the publication of two MAKIO'S, one by Phi Gamma Delta and 43 another by Phi Kappa Psi. But since the Phi Gamma Deita MAKIO was copyrighted, it be- came the official record for that year. The two fraternities later would return to publish one MAKIO for Ohio State after 1884. By this time, Sigma Chi had joined the yearbook effort. In 1893, due to the late-century depression, n0 yearbook was published. In 1896, the MA- KIO became the Scarlet and Gray. It re- turned to being the MAKIO in 1897, and con- tinued publication uninterrupted until 1978, when the last MAKIO was published. Financial problems brought an end to the Ohio State yearbook. In 1979, there was no yearbook for Ohio State. Then exactly 100 years after Phi Gamma Delta and Phi Kappa Psi began the first in 1880, Undergraduate Student Government in 1980 began the yearbook again. The Ohio State Yearbook will celebrate its 100th volume next year in a special centennial issue to be mentioned later. The yearbook has come a long way since 1880. In that first edition, there were no women involved and women would not be involved for many years. The 1880 Phi Gamma Deltas and Phi Kappa Psits would turn in their graves to learn that in 1980, the year- book editor, Kelly Sigier, is a woman. The 1980 edition was called uRelics 1980. Today's Greek system has both fraternities and sororities. While every house chapter has its own philanthropy projects and social activi- ties, both the Inter-Fraternity Council UFCi and the Pan-Helienic Association work together for special university-reiated projects. Every year, brightIy-colored floats line up on East 15th Avenue and 4000 Greeks make their annual trek down fraternity row toward Ohio 45 Stadium. It is one of Homecomingis biggest events, beaten only by the crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen, and the Court. The main event, of course, is the game itself. The Delta Gammais hold an annual vAnchor Splashii in which the sorority pits fraternities and sororities against each other in games of wit, skill, and just plain fun. Besides sponsoring a series of grueling swimming meets in Larkins Hall, the 0.635 also hold a ler. OSU contest, where fraternities send out their best-bodied men in an attempt to win the crown for their house. The fraternity or sorority with the high- est number of points at the end of the contest wins the DC. Anchor Splash title. The Alphs Tau Omega fraternity sponsors a Greek nFite Nite usually held at the Agora. It is an all night boxing competition between fra- ternities. A fraternity is supposed to give three llboxers to the event if possible. The fraternity which wins the most matches tusually 3 wins out of 3 matchesl wins the Fite Nite trophy. All proceeds from the event go to the effort to fight leukemia. The Fiji's hold a Queen of Hearts contest around Valentine's Day, which is supposed to be a talent and beauty contest. Finally, there is Greek Week, filled with odd contests and activities to celebrate the number of years the Greeks have served Ohio State University. The Greeks publish their own yearbook now, entitled llEncore. Certainly, the Greeks have come a long way since skull and cross- bone days. Many changes have taken place in the past century of Greek activity, although some of the fraternities and sororities rituals are still the same. Now, the Greek system must undergo change, to leave the 19th century behind them in the massive, almost overwhelming task of preparing for the 21st century. Heading this effort is Rick Ricketts, USGs former Vice President, winning counterpart of the uImpossible Dream team of LaRue and Ricketts. LaRue and Ricketts came from no- where in 1980 to defeat the Lanternis en- dorsed presidentiaVvice presidential team, a feat never before seen in Ohio Stateis history. TRIUMPH AND TRAGEDY The Buckeyes burst into the national spot- light in 1979, when, after being ranked no bet- ter than fourth in the Big Ten, swept the season undefeated. Their 11-0 Big Ten Championship sent the Cinderella team to Pasadena, where the Bucks narrowly missed winning the nation- al championship by one point, upset in the final minutes by Charles White, the season's Heisman Trophy Winner, and losing to USC 17- 16. Ohio State so impressed the collegiate sports world that Earle Bruce was named Coach of the Year and his Bucks were picked number one in both AP and UPI polls in 1980. Troubles began in the opener, when Syra- cuse gave OSU a serious run for the money, but losing 31-21. The season prior, they were beaten 31-8. Fans sighed relief when the Bucks shut out Minnesota 47-0 and defeated Arizona State 38-21. But UCLA returned to average its 1979 loss to OSU and stunned the Bucks 17-0. It was during this time that the local press start- ed antagonizing the team, so much in fact, that Earle Bruce suspended press conferences until the heat was off the players. The Buckeyes invaded Chicago by soundly beating Northwestern 63-0. The team began to roll once more, beating Indiana 27-17, blanking Wisconsin 21-0, and easily defeating I . Michigan State 48-16. 63 i ' gladgm But the Buckeyes seemed shaken. They looked ahead two weeks at Michigan perhaps a bit iIl-at-ease, knowing that the outcome of that game would once again determine the Big Ten championship. It just wasntt like last year, they thought. The polls now placed Michigan ahead of Ohio State and sportswriters were predicting a Michigan win. The Bucks rolled Iowa 41-7 and, one week later, donned their helmets to face Michigan. 64 Then there was Homecoming and the Illini came to Ohio Stadium. It should have been easy. It turned out that it wasnt. The game turned into an aerial display with a scoring extravagan- za by both teams unmatched in the Big Ten during the entire season. The Buckeyes squeaked out a win 49-42. At least the fans werentt disappointed. Actually, the team did an outstanding job defensively. Better than.1979. But the Bucks couldntt summon up the offensive drive needed to outscore Michigan. In the end, Michigan defeated Ohio State 9-3. Fm not fond of allit- eration, but, the big bad Bucksr backs were broken. Ohio State summed up the season by losing to Penn State 31-19 inthe Fiesta Bowl. No one can really say what lies ahead in 1981. But one thing is certain. The overkill of the press coverage at the beginning of the season affected the players' confidence. Be- cause they were chosen to be number one they had to be number one From the begin- h .. ning, the Buckeyes were stripped of the most vital human element in their character. Freedom. This lack of freedom was of a different sort. They were robbed of the ability to make mis- takes. Robbed of the ability to be human. To be a team. To be themselves. And it is this human element that must be re-instilled in the Buckeye character. The Buckeyes already know they are hu- man. But they need not be superhuman be- cause the fans or press say so. If ever they accomplish wondrous deeds it will be because they choose to do so in the line of duty. The final task is recognizing the opposition, individually, one at a time. ' Ohio State's basketball season was marked by some triumph, but a little more tragedy with a stinging humiliation by the NCAA. Not only did the Basketbucks fail to win the Big Ten championship, and not only did they fail to make the playoffs, they failed to get recognition by the NCAA for post season tour- nament play. But not all was bad. Ohio State did finish with a winning seasont14 wins, 13 lossesl. One could give Ohio State an average to better than average rating for their performance dur- ing the season. But the Bucks big problem was not mediocracy. Trouble lies in the public per- ception of Ohio State as a mediocre team. Simply stated, there is no perception of the Ohio State Buckeyes as a mediocre team. Not by the press. Not by the public. Not even by the NCAA. Thus, it did come as a surprise that Ohio State was not chosen for the tourna- ment. Other teams with similar records playing weaker teams could, and were chosen for tournament play. And surely this was a pu'z- zling situation for the Ohio State players, hav- ing shown their strong comeback ability in the latter part of the season, defeating Purdue in triple overtime 93-92 and a stunning upset over lowa 78-70. RETURN TO THE ROSES But these signals never registered with the NCAA, and Ohio State never saw tournament play. it is a shame. For the Buckeye team is perceived as an omnipotent Goliath in collegiate basketball. Rumors surged in pre-season 1980 about Ohio State being undefeated in the coming season. When that failed to materialize, the public clamor was ilonly for a Big Ten championship. Surely, expectations were still very high. This, of course, is not to say that they were not other factors involved in the NCAA decision. There were..But Eldon Miller's Buckeye basket- ballers seemingly possess the same dilemma that Earle Bruceis buckeye team possess. And that is the super power image that traditionally is attributed to Ohio State athletics. While it is true that OSU has a powerful athletic machine, it is fallacy to believe in any terms invulnerabil- ity. It simply doesn't exist. In any team. In any university. Nor does it exist in the pros. Players are not always as good as the fans think they are. They are only as good as they think they are. Fans tend to think in more romantic terms of hero-worship. And while some players idolize others; there is no one-man team on the Buck- eye squad. So says Eldon Miller. But the fans never-the-less have been good to the Bucks. They obviously play better in front of their own. Eleven of their fourteen wins were at home while nine of their thirteen losses were on the road. But the Buckeyes will not be looking back this year, and the lack of NCAA tournament games in 1981 will only fuel the furnace in Miller's team. The Bucks will leave their losses behind and will go on to win. Not because everyone will expect them to win, but because they choose to win. They will not spend time worrying about the abilities of teams rated bet- ter than they are. They will spend time dealing with it. The Ohio State Buckeyes will display the professionalism that lingers within them. And the NCAA will take a second look at a mis- placed team. OSU womenis basketball enjoyed a slightly better season than the men. Despite the fact that our Lady Bucks dropped their final two games to Illinois State t73-70i and Detroit i54- 49i, they finished with a winning overall record of 17-15. The women lost to North Carolina and Pittsburgh, but soundly defeated Northern Kentucky t85-56i in the Carolina Christmas Classic last season. Our Lady Bucks went on to Colorado State and Central Missouri State in the Jennies Classic held in Missouri and won two out of three in the Big Ten Women's Bas- ketball Championship, losing only to Minneso- ta 65-48. The women swept the OAISW State Division I Championship, rolling over Bowling Green State 74-52, Cincinnati 65-63, and Kent State 67-62. After beating lndiana 60-54 in the MAIAW Regional Division I Championship, their hopes were crushed when narrowly de- feated by Illinois State and Detroit. Our Lady Bucks have been shown to be a potential powerhouse in women's basketball. They are at their best when the pressure is on. Livingston Dean 14? lll' Letter from the Editor: Contentment is not merely the knowledge and advancement of an education. Satisfaction is limited when measured in material gain. One must also be concerned with a capacity to cope with life's misfortunes. Once someone has that ability, then one must inspect his capacity to reach out to others in need. Of course, we are not so blind to realize that education is vital. Education is the vein to the discovery of life. But life is only truly discovered through one's emotional commitment toward mankind. And this is where contentment lies. Contentment is an educated heart. Commitment is a driving force, the better half of wisdom which transforms one from beggar to sage and sets him along the path of winning ways. It then, are only those on this path which people remember through time They have become legends. If not legends in their own time, at least legends somewhere in time. Yesterday, legends were made by noble deeds, the knights in armor who struggled valiantly in victory or died nobly in defeat. Most envision Don Quixote on a white stallion, riding the crest of a patriots dream. But tomorrrow's legends will not be romantic idealists building castles in the clouds. Tomorrow's legends will mark the dawn of a new age. They will have a compassion for the betterment of mankind, a heart burning of newborn commitment to educate the world. It will not matter if they are young or old, for they would have iistepped the legend of their youth into the noon. For they will always be young. Tomorrowis legends will confront, battle, and conquer at the battle of Armageddon. And that battle is within one's self. I wonder how many among those of 1981 will become legends in their own time.
