TO THE CLASS OF 1980 What words of wisdom could I possibly offer now that will carry the faint ring of truth in 1990? I can't tell you about the real world. Most of you have been there -- as employee, wife, husband, veteran, in a hundred different ways. I can't even tell you what it will be like to be married, establish a home, start a family, take out your first mortgage. Many of you are well down that tracko I can only underscore something that you are beginning to sense in 1980, that you will see with greater clarity by 1990, and that you will know with absolute certainty in the year 2000. And that is that your need to continue learning will grow, not diminish, with the passing years. In connection with whatever work you do and in terms of your personal growth, you will soon discover a need and desire to stay in touch with learning. Opportunities for formal and informal education of all kinds will be as essential to you as food, clothing, and shelter. If I have any message to offer the Class of 1980 that may serve you well in the future, it is this: Make learning a central part of the lifestyle you will be establishing in the next few yearso Work at learning; enjoy it; give it the priority it deserves. And in the year 2000 you will look back with satisfaction and pleasure knowing that Ohio State did its part to point you in the right direction. Sincer 1y, X4 $7va Haro d Lo Enarson President QESU

Jesse Owens served on Ohio Statds track team from 1933 to 1936, during the time of Germanyk World War II reign of terror across Europe. Ironically, the 1936 Olympics was held in Berlin, Adolf Hitler used this opportunity to try to prove his theories of racial superiority. His hopes were short- lived. Hitlerts athletes were not only thwarted by an American, but by a black American, Jesse Owens, who won the Olympic gold medal for the United States in the backyard of the Third Reich. An en- raged Hitler refused to recognize Jesse and refused to shake his hand. We dedicate this book to Jesse Owens, 221 Buckeye who left his mark in history. There is little left for the Class of 1980 to say except uThank You, Mr. Owens, and farewell. ;.....-. -'... -1...- Myim, zu- WI-
