The Crimson Tide kept on the ground with their first possession, a 61-yard drive in 17 plays that OSU MVP Dave Adkins stopped when he spilted 'Bama OB Jeff Rutledge for no gain at the 3-yard tine. The Bucks took possession and went 44 yards before being forced to punt Alabama scored its tirst TD on a 1-yard Tony Nathan run. Buckeye Kelton Dansler was called on a face- mask penalty. Rutledge threw a 277yard touch- down pass to Bruce Bolton e right over Ray Grif- fin's head. The point-atter attempt by Roger Chapman was wide, and the Tide was still ahead, 13-0. The Bucks took over on their 23 In eight plays e including a 22-yard GeraId-Moore pass and a 42-yard sprint around left end by Ron Springs -F they were across the field on Alabama's five. In a pewer-I formation, Jimmy Harrell caught a pass and took it around the right end. The ball was spotted on the three e one yard short of first down. The Bucks were still scoreless going into the lockers at the half. In the third quarter, on a tackle by Aaron Brown, Rutledge fumbled the ball and OSU's Adkins recovered it on the 46. Ohio State made it to the thirty, but was forced back to the 40 and had to punt. The next scarlet-and-gray possession was on the 'Bama 35. Chris Ward jumped offside Terry Jones forced Gerald into a 41-yard loss. It was fourth and three on the 28. 'Bama was buzzin'.
