203 33 MINNE3IJTA 7 Rod Gerald and Hon Springs had a good afternoon Sep- tember 17 as Gerald completed five of seven passes one of them a 29- yarder to fianker Herman Jones that scored the first OSU touchdown An 18- -yard Janakievski field goal gave the Buckeyes a 10 0 lead at the half. There must' ve been something special in Woody's locker- room chat, as the Bucks scored four TD's in the second half 3 three of them on all three of their fourth-quarter posses- SIOI'IS. With a two'yard run, sophomore fuilback Ricardo Volley ended a 51-yard scoring drive that started when Ron Springs sped up the middle for 33 yards. Not to be intimidated, the Gophers countered with a punt return Bobby Weber took from two yards into the end zone ail the way for a Minnesota touchdown. The lead was closed down to 17-7. Springs scored the first Buckeye touchdown of the final period with an 8-yard run. Backup quarterback Greg Castig- nola connected with flanker Doug Donley on a 38-yard pass for another TD. Joel Payton ended the clay with a seven-yard rush and the final score. All in all, Ohio State gained 385 yards rushing and 133 yards passing, and kept the Gophers to 123 yards on the ground and 15 in the air.

Oklahoma exploded in Ohio Stadium with an Elvis Peacock touchdown, a Billy Sims touchdown, and a van Schamann field goal in the first quarter for a 110 iead. Another von Schamann kick early in the second quarter widened the lead to twenty points. Ron Springs scrambled 30 yards for the first OSU score, and Gerald was close behind with another touchdown to bring the score to 20-14 going into the locker rooms. Hatfway into the third quarter, Joel Payton pulled the long last yard to give the Bucks another touchdown and a 20-20 tie. Vlade Janakievski made the conversion, and Ohio State was ahead. 21- 20. The crowd went crazy! Kelton Dansler intercepted an Oklahoma pass moments tater and ran it to the far 33. Two plays and eleven yards later, quarter- back Rod Gerald was tackfed for no gain and left the game with a concussion. Greg Castignola took over and passed sixteen yards to tight end Jimmy Moore in the end zone. After the point-after, Ohio State had increased its lead to 28-20. That wasn't quite enough when another Peacock touchdown capped off a 13Aplay Okiahoma drive that started with a Buckeye fumble. bringing the score to 28-26. His attempted two-point con- version was unsuccessful, and there was less than a minute-and- a-half left in the game. Von Schamann's kick was recovered by the Sooners at the 50- yard line. Three plays later von Schamann was kicking again AM this time a field goal from the 23, with three seconds left 'til the gun. Ohio State had lost to Oklahoma in front of a sellout crowd and a national TV audience.
