i i l. I t .- -..,-.-..v Ohio State opened its '77 football season with a pewer backfield and their first-ever meeting with Miami of Florida. The Buckeyes beat the Hurriv canes, but lost Jeff Logan and his backup, sopho- more Fticky Johnson, in the process. Early in the second quarter e after gaining 31 yards in 10 carries e Logan was forced oft the fieid with an ankte injury. The Bucks kept up their scoring drive, however, and sophomore Vlade Janakievski kicked in a 31-yard field goal to put OSU on top, 3-0, with 10:40 Iett in the period. Ricky Johnson went in at tailback and gained 50 yards in the first halt, 32 of them in a broken. field run that gave Ron Springs 3 chance to score on a 21-yard scamper. The score was 10-0 at halftime. Halfway into the third quarter, Johnson was out with a knee strain. Springs took over in the backfield, alternating between tailback and full- back and carrying the ball 27 times for 114 yards. Miami quarterback E. J. Baker led the Hurri- canes to the 080 10, anticipating a score with less than two minutes left in the game. But the Buckeye defense read the pass and gave Ohio State its first win and first shut-out 0f the season. 10-0. MIAMI IJ
