UCLA came to Columbus unbeaten. 3-0. and ranked second in the nation Memories of last years 23-10 Buckeye Rose Bowl loss to the Bruins had not yet faded. During the second play of the game defensive tackle Nick Buenamici sprained a toe; he sat out most of the first half. With 8:3? left in the first half, safety Ftay Griffin returned a punt seventeen yards. Eight plays and a 19-yard GeraId-Storer pass later. the Bucks were ahead. Y-O. But on the first UCLA possession ot the second half. Frank Corral booted a 4?+yard Held goat. Bruin QB Jeff Dankworth led an 83-yard march and snuek in from the one-foot line to make the score UCLA 10, OSU ?. Tom Skladany kicked a 25-yard field goal to tie the score for the Buckeyes. Rod Gerald and Jeff Logan ted the Bucks t'across the field. With a third-and-two situation at the UCLA 8. Gerald lost a yard, forcing Sktadany to boot. The stadium crowd. national W audience. and both teams went home disappointed by the 10-10 tie.

With gains come losses. Early in the Homecoming game against Purdue. sophomore 08 Rod Gerald was lost for the remainder of the regular season, with a lowerback injury. Senior back-up Jim Pacenta nervously took his piace and led the Bucks to a 24-3 win over Purduet Linebacker Tom Cousineau led the OSU defense. which held the Boilermakers to 206 yards. Jeft Logan ied the Buckeye offense with 1?5 yards in 27 carries. Logan broke the 3-3 tie late in the third period. with an.11-yard dash up the middle. Fullback Pete Johnson scored the next TD from the one-yard line. Defensive and Bob Brudzinski intercepted a Boilermaker pass and returned it 23 yards. Logan ran the ball in for a Buckeye touchdown. Although Woody was upset at losing Gerald, he was highly pleased by Pacentais performance. After the tremendous team effort in the second half, he proclaimed. Weire definitely getting better. 26
