Hod Gerald. and Pete Johnson to deliver - and deliver theyr did. The Bucks gobbled up touchdowns like six-packs on a Saturday night. At halftime the Spartans were behind, 35-0. Gerald had scored two touchdowns. Johnson two. and Logan one. Tailhack Logan ran 1'5 yards for a TD. to open second-half scoring. Michigan State picked up their first score on a 4-yard touchdown pass from Marshall Lawson to flanker Kirk Gibson. Another Lawson-Gibson pass in the fourth quarter put the score to 42-14. Jeff Logan made a spectacular 63-yard punt return to TB for the Buckeyes. The Spartans made the last score of the game on a Robinson-Radelet pass. Ohio State had won their '?5 openere 49-21. Quarterback Gerald rushed for 104 yards and helped the Bucks gain 463 yards on the ground. Logan ran for 112 yards and, in addiiion 10 his 68-yard punt return, completed a 36-yard pass. Pete Johnson tallied 99 yards for the day and boosted his career TD total to 411 The Buckeyes were off and running. a 20 21 The second game was at Penn State. Flod Gerald broke the scoreleSS tie midway through the second quarter. with an eig ht-yard run climaxing an 82-yard scoring drive that began with an interception in the end zone by safety Ray Griffin. A bad pass from center resulted in a missed extra point. The Bucks were ahead. 5-0. The Nittany Lions started marching down the tield but e at the OSU 4-yard line e Steve Geise fumbled and Buckeye defensive end Bob Brudzinski recovered. Earlyr in the fourth quarter' wingback Bob Hyatt made his first TD for the Bucks with an eight-yard run on a fourth -down option play. With 10:12 left in the game. the attempted two-peint conversion failed. Penn State pulled out a touchdown and extra point. and the score was OSU 12. Penn State 7. Buckeye end Kelton Danster ihtercepted aJohn Andress pass. ruining the Lions' comeback attempt: the score stood. Even though Missouri was considered the t'underdog. the Tigers upset Ohio State, 22-21. snapping a 25-home-game winning streak tor the Buckeyes. Although the Bucks led at the halft 21-7, Missouri penetrated the tough Buckeye team, In the last twelve seconds of the game. Missouri OB Pete Woods e having moved the Tigers 80 yards in twelve plaYs - led them to the final touchdciwn. Pete Johnson e last year's national scoring leader a led the attack for OSU by scoring three TD's in seven minutes. during the second quarter, Pete rushed for 119 yards in 23 carries, while Jeff Logan gained 110 yards in thirteen rushes. UCLA came to Columbus unbeaten. 3-0. and ranked second in the nation Memories of last years 23-10 Buckeye Rose Bowl loss to the Bruins had not yet faded. During the second play of the game defensive tackle Nick Buenamici sprained a toe; he sat out most of the first half. With 8:3? left in the first half, safety Ftay Griffin returned a punt seventeen yards. Eight plays and a 19-yard GeraId-Storer pass later. the Bucks were ahead. Y-O. But on the first UCLA possession ot the second half. Frank Corral booted a 4?+yard Held goat. Bruin QB Jeff Dankworth led an 83-yard march and snuek in from the one-foot line to make the score UCLA 10, OSU ?. Tom Skladany kicked a 25-yard field goal to tie the score for the Buckeyes. Rod Gerald and Jeff Logan ted the Bucks t'across the field. With a third-and-two situation at the UCLA 8. Gerald lost a yard, forcing Sktadany to boot. The stadium crowd. national W audience. and both teams went home disappointed by the 10-10 tie. 25 --....:-.-5' 1- With gains come losses. Early in the Homecoming game against Purdue. sophomore 08 Rod Gerald was lost for the remainder of the regular season, with a lowerback injury. Senior back-up Jim Pacenta nervously took his piace and led the Bucks to a 24-3 win over Purduet Linebacker Tom Cousineau led the OSU defense. which held the Boilermakers to 206 yards. Jeft Logan ied the Buckeye offense with 1?5 yards in 27 carries. Logan broke the 3-3 tie late in the third period. with an.11-yard dash up the middle. Fullback Pete Johnson scored the next TD from the one-yard line. Defensive and Bob Brudzinski intercepted a Boilermaker pass and returned it 23 yards. Logan ran the ball in for a Buckeye touchdown. Although Woody was upset at losing Gerald, he was highly pleased by Pacentais performance. After the tremendous team effort in the second half, he proclaimed. Weire definitely getting better. 26 27 28 J!!! Thanks to the Buckeye defense. OSU beat Indiana, 4?-7. on the road. Nick Buonamiei intercepted a Hoosier pass and carried it thirty yards before passing it to Flayr Griffin. who went all the way e 55 more yards - for the touchdown. With the Bucks ahead 12-7. end Bob Brudzihski forced an Indiana fumble and Tom Coustneau jumped on the ball on the 49-yard line Ten plays later. Pete Johnson had scored six more Buckeye points. The tinat touchdown came with a 62-yard run by Coffeyvtlle transfer Ron Springs. Back home in Ohio Stadium 6. week later. the Bucks met Illinois. Jim Pacenta had his best day yet, completing ? of 10 passes for 101 yards. The defense was strJI hot. Linebacker Ed Thompson had two interceptions; linebacker Dave Adkins. end Bob Brudzihski. and cornerback Bruce Ruhl each snatched onet Pete Johnson drove in tour touchdowns bringing his career total to 5? e six shyr of the NCAA record. The Buckeyes soundly deteated the IJIini, 42-10. This year was no exception. as the Michigan Wolverines came south to Columbus in the annual renewal of college football's greatest rivalry. As is usual when the Wolverines and Buckeyes get together. the game decided the Big Ten champion and the conterence Ftose Bowl representative. as wetl as a possible shot at the number-one ranking in the nation. The first half was a showcase for the two outstanding defenses. A scoretess halftime was insured when Jim Pacenta's pass - intended for Greg Storer - was intercepted by Michigan defensive back Jim Pickens in the visitor's end-zone with time running out, dpe Hopes for a Buckeye comeback and a New Years trip to Pasadena were shattered as the devastating Michigan running attack began to grind out yardage in the second half. The Wolverines pushed across two touchdowns and a two-point conversion, for a 15-0 lead. The Buckeyes were plagued by turnovers in their attempt to play catch-up. and, combined with the improvable Michigan detense, they prevented OSU ircm threatening again in the finat 22-0 loss. The largest crowd in Ohio Stadium history -88.250 fans h had no choice but to agree with Woody: We were obviously beaten by a better team? 33 -.-nt . t .--v we- Temperature at kickoff was 65 degrees. and the moon was over Miami as the Buckeyes - in their firstuever trip to the Orange Bowl - met the Colorado Buffaloes. Ohio State had Flod Gerald back. and Colorado had Fialphie. their very pregnant mascot. Bill Malloryte Buffaloes scored the first two times they carried the ball, rushing to a 10-0 lead in the first period. With Geraid at quarterback. Hon Springs at tailback. and Jeff Logan at fullback, in two plays Logan had raced 36 yards for the first Buckeye TD. Colorado - held back by the Buckeye defense e couldn't move the ball and punted to the OSU 33. Tom Skladany kicked in a field goal from the 28. and the score was tied at 10-10. Picking up on a fumble by Buckeye Joe Allegro. Colorado carried the ball to the 17. With their regular kicker - Torn Mangnall e injured eartier in the season. they put in Zetterberg to try a field goal. Nick Buonamici blocked the kick End the ball went out of bounds at the ane-yard line. Determined. Ohio State stomped 99 yards downfield. aided by a 15-yard defensive penalty called when Colorado's Mark Haynes hit Flod Gerald. Pete Johnson scared the touchdown with 24 seconds left in the half. on a three-yard run. The score was1T-10. and the Bucks were ahead. The OSU defense - led by Tom Cousineau - kept Colorado down to 3? ground yards and three passes completed out of five. in the second half. The Buckeyes! speed was just too much for the Buffaloes. Sklaldz'myI scored a 20-yard F6 in the third period. Gerald made the finalaquartertouchdown on a 4-yard run. bringing the tinal score to 27-10. The Bucks went home a little tanner and a lot happier. 36 ..qr .... First-year coach Efdon Miller found the lack of a big man in the middle to be more 01 a problem than anticipated, as the basketball Buckeyes suffered a disappointing season. A fine recruiting year brought promising freshmen Kelvin Ransey. Mark Hetz. Jirn Ellinghausen, and Tony Hall to Columbus - but all too often they;r joined veterans in 1iring away irom long range with poor reaults. Senior captain Larry Bolden displayed team leadership and talent, finishing with teague leaders both in assists and freehthrow percentage; Clarence Hammondh Mike Daugherty. and Terry Burris added to the balanced attack, which should be vastly improved next season without freshman jitters 4:0 STATE .UIII am 38 HOW I iL'RI: Greg Romano. Teresa Princg In their second year. the women's cross country team completed a year of learning under the tutelage of first year coach and tormer Olympian. Mamie Hallins. The presence of Rallins. however. was not enough to com- pensate for the loss 01 three standout runners to gradua- tion. as the women were unabie to repeat the results of their initial season. Many of the women h including Jana Edwards. Pat Kral. and Chrystal Overholt - closed-in on the 20-minute mark over the three-mife course. and other performances during the season improved by as much as one-and-a-half minutes. 4h 1 1 I The loneliness of the Buckeye long-distance runners paid off handsomely as the team reached many difficult team goals. A dual record of 6-2 was marred by losses to Kentucky and Tennessee - both of which finished nationally in the top twelve. The Bucks put together a team efiort. capturing dual victories as well as the alI-Ohio championship over 26 other schools. Senior Torn Byers and freshman imports Paul Roberts - from Canada - and Steve Crane e from Australia -- topped the Ohio State scoring, while John Glidewell. Lyle Braund, Mark Davis. and co-captain Joe Hard rounded out the top seven starters. The Big Ten meet - which included six nationalIy-ranked teams - proved a bit too tough for the Bucks as they finished a strong sixth. The best was yet to come for running stars Byers and Crane: a trip to the national meet in Texas. Illness forced Byers to halt his efforts mid-race. but Crane continued. The ladies came off a splendid 38-9 autumn record and plunged headlong into a fierce spring lineup. including a visit to the Furman Invitational. one of the top women's tourneys in the country Senior Cathy Duplin paced the squad time-and-time-again with her consistently outstanding play. Joined by Lynn Darby. Amy Shock. and treshmen Judyr Ellis and Debbie Ross. Milch Camp. 1 Two consecutive eleventh-piace finishes in the NCAA tournament were battered this season as the powerful Ohio State golf team placed ninth in the nation. through outstanding consistency and team balance. The Buckeyes ran away' with the Big Ten title - one of three tournament records theyf set this year. The six 1irst-tearn members -Johnny Cook. Rod Spittle, Ralph Guarasci, Rick Borg, Mark Balen. and Tom Fairgrieve - recorded season averages within a stroke of each other, and all broke 70 at least once. In addition to leading the Bucks into the NCAA top-ten, these six linksmen were named to the All Big Ten team. with Cook capturing the Les Bolstead award for low stroke average. 47 17s. a 4 The Buckeye gymnastic team had an uphill battle this season, opening the season with oniy five returning lettermen. The squad faced an improved schedule which included defending NCAA champion Penn State. and an increased number of toUgh Big Ten opponents. As expected. top performers on the mats were co-captain Chuck Ewing - the team's mos! consistent allharound gymnast h and sophomore vaulter Rod Newland. The Buckeyes improved their place in the rugged Big Ten meet tram ninth to eighth, and placed twentieth in the nationals - the highest Ohio State had placed in eleven years. AII-American Andy DiSabato brought home thirdeplace in the 142 weig ht class tor best individual Buckeye performance. Although much emphasis was placed on preparing for these season's-end tournaments. the grapplers did not slig ht their dual meetsl In addition to DiSabato. Mike Susteric. Paul Luther. and Kevin liltuigleyr all turned in outstanding performances. As Coach Ford's program swings into full gean he must replace several important graduates: Todd Jindral Mike Pace, M'rke Susteric. and Kevin Quigley. The Buckeye wrestlers are establishing a strong foothold in the nationai championships. and will improve their standing in the Big Ten. The women's synchronized swim team stretched its string of victortes to nine years - that's right, nine years - as theyr again Swept through an undefeated season and captured their first national title. Both the Ladyr Buckeyes' A and El teams proved to be incredibly strong in all areas of competition. with only one ciese meet. H . g h A fifteen-year winning streak more often than not is the sign of a championship club. but the inabihtyr of the men's tennis team to continue iheir regular season performance in the Big Ten meet. cast a damper on a superb year. John Botua -the squad's first singles player and 0thr senior h .aiong with Jim Flower. Drew Rosen, and John Beck, exemphiied the frustration in the Big Ten meet by being reiegated to the consolation brackets. The third-place finish was solidified by Pedro Gonzales and Steve Hyuse, each of whom won a title in his division. The thirteen returning varsity members, however, should be more than enough to uphold the Buckeyes' reputation asa true force in men's colfegiate tennis. A third straight Big Ten title, 21 Midwest Regional championship. and a visit 10 Louisiana State and the NationaX Championship were season hig h- lights. Maria Olazagasti won everything in sight, leading the team as the first singles player. Senior Ann Wilson - Olazagaslrs doubles partner - captured the second sing- les Ohio title and numerous doubles titles wiih Maria. Ranked tenth in the nation at the start of the year. the Bucks ran up an impressive 5-1-1 record, losing onlyr to national power Indiana in the Big Ten championship game, Led by Gary Kubala. Klaus Lambeck. Marcus Collier. and MVP Javier Castillejos. the team looked ahead to continued success and a possible invitation to the national championship tournament. Five successive losses, however. shattered that chance and ptaced a .500 season in jeopardy. In a spur! traditionaliy dominated by westcoast schools. Coach Suguru Furuichi deveioped the Buckeyes into not only a midwestern, but a national powerhouse. Five returning ali-conference iirst-team selections - Marc Waldie. Sheiton Collieri Pete Dumpisi Mike Buckingham. and Aidis Berzins - formed the nucleus of the squad. while Drew Vaneck, Pal Carlson. and Gary Osman provided reserve strength. These three - in addition to Flalph lverson and Arnie Tolks I will be called upon next season to replace Collier. Girls in- terested in sororities visit each house and, through the process of elimina- tion, decide which one is ttfor them. Fraternities also rush. but not in such a formal manner. Houses display signs, pro- claiming their Greek letters and their Buckeye spirit. Each house tries to outcheer neighboring houses. The big event of fall is Homecoming - frater- nities and sororities get together and build floats that express a certain theme. Floats are judged in several categories, the points are tallies. and the winners are announced at the football game. A new event this year was a HBeat Michigan'i sign contest. ' 1 mm Iui liltfh Hm ! f .tUII fiat An altruistic event held every spring is the Sigma Chi Derby Day. to raise moneyr for Recreation Unlimited, to help send handicapped children to camp. It is a week-Iong event, during which sororities compete for points, toward winning a trophy. Each house helps to decorate the Sigma Chi house with signs and their Greek letters. A banquet is held, and the men choose 3 Derby Day queen. The last Saturday is the most competitive; the sororities limbo, out-yell each other, run races, and have a costume contest. Other events include a beer chug and 3 vol- leyball game, each bringing more points to choose the winner. 212 Greek life, by any means, is not com- posed entirely of fun and games. An important aspect of the Greek system is the desire to help the less fortunate. Each house has its own philanthropic project. The Sigma Alpha Mute hold their annual ttBounce-for-Beats, to raise money for the Heart Fund. Chi Phi fraternity and Alpha Chi Omega sorority have a car-smash to support Muscular Dystrophy. Each fall Phi Kappa Tau has a pumpkin sale to raise money for seeing-eye dogs. Delta Tau Delta holds a track-a-thon, and Phi Gamma Delta supports runners from Cleveland to Columbus. Other al- truisms include Lambda Chi Alphal Alpha Xi Delta's graffiti board for Mus- cular Dystrophy, and the Delta Gamma Anchor Splash? There is also a blood drive each Greek Week. 213 Competition . . . Excitement . . . Cooperation . . . Support . . . To- getherness. . .Defeat. . .Happiness . . . Frustration. . . Rivalry. . .Ser- vice . . . Unity. . .These all describe what Greek Week entails. This is the biggest fun-fiiled activity of the Greek system each spring, and all learn to compete with each other as well as bring everyone closer together in the Greek family. Greek Week involves var- ious events. There is an alI-Greek art show where Greek talent is displayed in the Ohio Union, and the talent show which also brings out the hidden qual- ities in many. 214 During the entire week there is ex- citement and anticipation of the games that are on Saturday. These in- clude the tricycle- and bed-races, the legs contest, the tug-of-war. the beer-chug, the egg-toss, and pyramid-building. Other events throughout the week include the cow-milking contest. the aII-Greek sing, and the blood drive for the Red Cross. There were two new events this year: a trivia contest which tested the minds of the Greeks, and a bake-off which challenged the cooking ability of either housemothers or house members. ICDLLAS eewee The Ohio State yearbook - Makio - was started in 1880 by members of Phi Gamma Delta l Fiji 1 and Phi Kappa Psi. the two fraternities on campus at the time. The name of the book is derived from the Japanese for magic mirror. and is based on a legend that all people will see themselves in a magical. spiritual mirror 2 'iMakio .- which reveals everything in their past, the bad as well as the good. Makio staff members do not receive class credit or a salary for working on the book. At the end of the year - if they have done a sufficient amount of work - they receive a free copy of the yearbook. Theyr also get the satisfaction that comes with putting together a college yearbook. The yearbook is not strongly supported by the University. and funds must he raised through subseriptions. senior portrait sitting fees. and sales of Space in the yearbook to organizations. Ohio State won the Orange Bowl. the 42 smoked pot and liked it aiot, the soloist at summer commencement flubbed the words to Carmen Ohio, and my ex-boyfriend got engaged to a girl he'd known for 4172 months. The most important things that happened to you at Ohio State this year were probably personal things e meeting people, setting goals, gaining insight, losing sleep - and those things are dif- ficult to capture in a yearbook. This yearbook is an overview of the Ohio State University in 1976-77. If we overlooked you or what you did or felt here. we are sorry for that. But then again there are certain things that only you can capture. whether they be hidden in your head or photographed with your Kodak In- stamatic or scrawled in your own ttwrite-your. own-book. We have not photographed anyone's first sexual experience or a drunken night on High Street or a pot or non-pot party with friends. We have not photographed a wedding or an argu- ment with roommates or a tragic loss. But chances are. those are the sort of things that are the most important e or at least among the most memorable e things to happen to you here. A yearbook is a group effort. and so I must thank the people who made it possible. First, you e if you bought a yearbook or helped us along. Next, the photographers - they did a tremendous job. and the layouts would have been pretty empty without them. The staff e the people who tried and faiied. and the people who tried and kept on trying. And the people who just WEFIE trying a very trying! ltd like to thank Mr. Jim Trainer, our only link to the bureaucracy that IS Ohio State.
