At Ohio State, the Pi Sigma Alpha chapter of Mortar Board, senior women ' s honorary society, has a double significance. It was the local group, established in 1914, that founded the now national honorary, composed of sixty- four chapters distributed throughout the coun- try. The name and the small black and gold mortar board pin adopted by all chapters were originated by the Ohio State organi- zation. During Traditions Week, an early morn- ing candlelight ceremony notifies the sixteen most outstanding junior women of their elec- tion to the society. The choice is based on superiority in scholarship, leadership and service to the University. Black-robed actives conduct the white-robed neophytes down the Long Walk to the Library for individual pres- entation to the president of the University. The pledge to uphold the traditions of Mortar Board is taken at Mirror Lake and the ritual draws to a picturesgue conclusion with the lantern ceremony. The symbolic robe of gov- ernment and the lamp of knowledge are then passed from the outgoing to the incoming members. The activities of Mortar Board center around the promotion of scholarship, leader- ship and service to the Unversity. faricuib i urn While Ohio State was founded as the Ohio Agri- cultural and Mechanical College, and has always offered the sciences related to agriculture, it is only in comparatively recent years that the College of Agriculture has attained large attendance. There are almost twice as many students in the college now as were found in the entire University in 1900. The present college year saw a larger increase in the College of Agriculture than in any other college on the campus. It continues to be among the three largest colleges of agriculture in the world. The reorganization of the poultry division, the erection of several poultry buildings, the addition of some new horticultural greenhouses, and the in- stallation of an irrigation system have relieved the former inadeguacy of its facilities. The college in- cludes the School of Home Economics and the Agricultural Extension Service. Headed by Dean John F. Cunningham and Junior Dean Lyman E. Jackson, the College of Agriculture cooperates closely with the Ohio Experiment Station at Wooster. Five departmental chairmen in the college are chiefs of their respective divisions at the Experiment Station. To some extent farm land and buildings at the University are utilized for re- search work in which the college and the Experi- ment Station cooperate. Men Students 987 Women Students . ' . 507 Total 1,494 Decrees Granted 212 Faculty 112 This college ranks second in the nation in enrollment. [29]
