i i -ii utmmmmmm 1939 Se emor wm Brown, Baker Gillespie, Grierson. Taylor, Ream, McCallum Wood, Drake, Vines, Baker, Stockdale Romantic, collegiate, ultra-smooth — these terms partially describe the out- standing excellence of the Senior Prom of 1939. Held during the most com- pletely romantic period of the year — Spring Quarter — the Prom was a perfect climax for one of the most outstanding social seasons in Ohio State history. Richard Baker, president of Sphinx, and Mary Jane Vines, president of Mortar Board, were co-chairmen of the affair. Their work in coordinating the activities of the seven committees resulted in a Prom that will long be remembered for its ex- cellent entertainment and enjoyment. Being escorted by Richard Baker, president of the Senior Class, gave Martha Brown the title of Prom Queen. She was presented with a beautiful bouguet of flowers by the Prom committees. The thorough enjoyment which the capacity crowd evidenced was ample proof of the complete success of the Prom. [22] [U] r

— chti ' Richard Thomas Baker Richard Boughner John Irvin Carlson )pk r mx The outgoing members of Sphinx, solemnly at- tired in caps and gowns, march down the steps of University Hall. It is eleven o ' clock on Link Day, the day set aside during Traditions Week for the senior men ' s honorary to initiate. The atmosphere is tense with excitement as the group proceeds on its march through the assembled crowd. Suddenly a resounding slap on a new member ' s back breaks the crisp silence. As each man is linked he is escorted to the steps of old University Hall where the president of the University greets each individ- ually. Later they march in pairs to Mirror Lake where the rituals are secretly completed, tk Sphinx was founded on the Ohio State campus in 1907. It has increased in prominence and in- fluence among campus organizations until today it ranks at the top of the list. The society is perpetu- ated each year by the election to membership of not more than sixteen men. The selections are made on the basis of scholarship, activities, character, and personality. To be honored by being linked for Sphinx is the highest award that can be accordei an undergraduate. The Sphinx society has come to symbolize more than just an honorary; it is a living, active body of the University ' s outstanding students striving to do all it can to add to its revered Alma Mater ' s fame and glory.
