Founding' An act passed by Congress in 1862, and approved by President Lincoln on July 2 of that year, provided that there should be granted to each state thirty thousand acres of public land for each Senator and Representative to which it was entitled. The proceeds of this act were to constitute a trust fund, the income from which was to be applied in maintaining a college. i ln 1801- the Act of the Ohio Legislature accepting this grant became a law: and in 1820 an act entitled An act to establish and maintain an Agricultural and Mechanical College in Ohio was passed. On the seventeenth day of September, ISYIS, the institution was opened for the reception of students. . It was not until 1878 that the name was changed to The Ohio State University and the institution reorganized on broader lines. Presidents Dr. Edward Orton, 1873-1881. Rev.
