THE OATH OF HIPPOCRATES I do solemnly swear by whatever l hold most sacred, that I will be loyal to the profession of Medicine nndjust and generous to.its members . , . That I will lead my life and practice my Art in uprightness and honor: that into whatso- ever home I shall enter it shall be for the good of the sick and the well to the utmost of my power: and that I will hold myself aloof from wrong and from corruption and from the tempting of others to vice . . . That I will exercise my art solely for the cure of my patients and the prevention of diseaseg and will give no drug nor perform any operation for a criminal purpose, and far less suggest such thing. . . That whatsoever I shall see or hear of the lives of men which is not fitting to be spoken I shall keep inviolably secret . . . J V ' l k , I There are men and classes of men that stand above the common herd: the soldier, the sailor, and the shep- herd not infrequently, the artist rarely, rarelier still, the clergyman, the physician almost as a rule. He is the flower K such as it is Q of our civilizationg and when that stage of man is done with, and only to be marvelled at in history, he will be thought to have shared as little as any in the defects of the period, and most notably ex- hibited the virtues of the race. Generosity he has, such as is possible to those who practice an art, never to those who drive a trade, discretion, tested by a hundred secrets, tact, tried in a thousand embarrassments, and what are nzore important, Heraclean cheerfulness and courage. So that he brings air and cheer into the sick room, and often enough, though not so often as he wishes, brings heal- fag. ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON lg f H H ' H XX, , . . Dear Colleagues of the Class of 1960: It seems but yesterday that I penned a personal letter to each of you, warmly welcoming you as freshman medical stu- dents into the coveted fellowship of this College and University - and, now, you tell me it is time to write the closing paragraph for this introductory chapter to your medical careers! To refresh your memory, just four years ago, this month, I wrote: Since early last fall 09551 we have been seeking to select those young men and women best pre- pared and most appropriately fitted by natural endowment for the study and practice of medicineg for medicine today combines the disciplines of an ancient Art with the tools of modern science each effectively complementing the other. You are being born currently into a distinguished family with a proud heritage and treasured traditions. You are a very much wanted fand neededj son in this large family of the health sciences . . . You have proved yourself to be a person of integrity, emotionally stable, and a physically and mentally mature student, who gives full promise of the capability of accepting the responsibilities for health and happiness, and at times, of decisions affecting the life and death of your fellowmen. This is a sacred trust for which, together, we shall strive to keep prepared through- out our professional lives. My sincere congratulations to each of you in having faithfully fulfilled your period of legally required four years ap- prentice fellowship, so that now you are ready to launch upon your own professional careers, which in this day of largely controlled infections and increasingly effective preventive health measures, should assure most of you an active life of satisfying practice up to, and perhaps well into the next century, 2000 A.D.! Some of you will remember the preface of John Galsworthy to his novel, The Island Pharisees, where man is de- scribed as born into the world to go on a journey - and for the most part on the high road. Most people like those main roadsg mostly their fathers went on these roads before themg on these roads one is sure of pleasant company, good food and safe shelters for the night. Relatively few people venture out into the unknown, where unmapped forests, un- charted rivers and trackless swamps with quick sands and hostile animals and men may be. Some of those who do leave the beaten track temporarily, hurry back and are happy to get back again on the safer and pleasanter highway, and take good care not to leave it again, some of the more adventurous perish without ever being heard from againg but once in a great while a man of courage and resourcefulness does get through, and then, a new road is opened to mankind - or, in this age, a new airway is pioneered to the uttermost limit of the Universe. Such are the choices with which you are now faced. Your many friends and associates, and now, your colleagues, wish you well, having every confidence that from this class will come those who will contribute mightily to the future progress of medicine, while also guaranteeing the perpetuation and application of all that is best in today's current medical practice. Just do not try to occupy a position for which you are unqualified, and do not accept a challenge less than your maximum genius is capable of meeting. Hans Selye has just made a rather startling prediction which should give pause and stimulation to you as you begin your medical careers: If the causes of aging can be found, there is no good medical reason to believe that it will not be possible for science to find some practical way of slowing the process down, or even bringing it to a standstill! In the terms I am using here, aging can be regarded as a disease. Like any other direare it if probably preventable or curable. And since tissue is technically immortal the normal life span of a human being may be described as any number of years the medical science of the moment is capable of making it - today's 70 years, a' hundred, or perhaps more. There is no theoretical limit - though there will always be a practical limit set by imperfect medical skill and knowledge, and the risky, but unavoidable adventure of living outside a test tube. Welcome! Now into the full, satisfying fellowship of the medical profession, where you are so urgently needed and where you will strengthen and be strengthened by the small but courageous majority, who so live and work that others may live more abundantly. ROLLO .BAKER 3 X ,QQTLI6 S QW in-L, W 1 ,. -iw I J 'l W The career of Doctor Rollo C. Baker as a teacher began before high school gradua- tion at the age of sixteen in the school district of Echo, Ohio, and continued later at the village of Chatham, Ohio. It has been said that he had contemplated a ministerial career, but was persuaded against it because of an allergic reaction to chicken dinners. In his earliest years in the University, he showed some interest in geology, but later came under the influence of Dr. Francis L. Landacre - one of the stalwarts of this College and University. This resulted in Dr. Baker's life-long interest in and study of anatomy as evidenced by a Master's Degree from this University and that of a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Chicago. For forty-four years he has been an honored and respected .member of the faculty of the College of Medicine and of the University. He has served at all levels of teaching from Student Assistant and Instructor to Professor and Chairman of the Department of Anatomy. The high standards and reputation of this department is a monument to the developmental and building capacity of this teacher. His influence has extended far beyond the confines of his own department. This ability was recognized by his appoint- ment as Acting Dean of the College of Medicine in the latter years of the last great war. During his administration, the basic planning and groundwork of the University Health Center took place. At that time, he relinquished the Chairmanship of the Department of Anatomy, but since then has served faithfully as Assistant Dean and Secretary of the College of Medicine. His has been a stabilizing influence in the College of Medicine throughout all his many years of association - certainly most notable was that during the turbulent years previous to World War II. His research activity has continued apace with his teaching, with his chief interest in the comparative neurology of the vertebrates. His greatest forte, however, has been his ability as a teacher. At all times he has adhered to and maintained the highest standards and ideals of pedagogical endeavor. I-Ie gave his students not only subject material, but himself. He made gross anatomy a living, moving subject and placed it in its rightful position closely allied and coordinated with the fields of clinical medicine. His sparkling wit and humor as a teacher was a material aid in impressing students with essential in- formation. His characteristic remarks and descriptions of subject matter have come to be known as Bakerismsf' It is logical to assume that these will remain longer in the minds of his students than some of the facts of anatomy. Time marches on inexorably and this year marks the retirement of Dr. Rollo C. Baker from active participation in the instructional and administrative forces of the College of Medicine. However, it is sincerely hoped that his sage advice and counsel will continue to be available in the many years to come. I8 The Class of 1960 is extremely proud to choose as its MAN OF THE YEAR-DOCTOR KARL P. KLASSEN, Professor of Surgery and Chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery. Endless volumes could be devoted to the many superlatives that describe his qualities, his warmth and sincerity that he manifests to patients and students alike, his quiet friendliness, and his calm, gentle manner to name a few. As a teacher, Dr. Klassen thoroughly enjoys work- ing with his students. Countless times have We been conducted on unscheduled ward rounds when he felt that some important teaching point could be garnered. He also continues a close association with his former residents who are now practicing throughout the country. Dr. Klassen was born in the Riviera of the USSR in a small town in the central part of Crimea, where his father was headmaster of a private German school. Dr. Klassen is one of the few Russians in this country who does not claim nobility, although he keenly remem- bers his role as the boy carrying bread and salt on a golden platter at a reception for the Czar just two years before the Revolution. Young Klassen presented a slightly excavated loaf to the Czar having eaten the central part of the bread during the long period of waiting for his arrival. For religious and economic reasons his parents left Russia with their large family of thirteen children in 1925. His older brother, a missionary in India, ar- ranged for his college education at Wfheaton College in Illinois, where he received a B.S. degree in 1931. He enrolled at the University of Chicago and obtained his doctor's degree following an internship in surgery at Billings Hospital in 1936. Dr. Klassen possibly would have chosen obstetrics and gynecology as his field of specialtyg however, when serving as a clerk in obstetrics at the famous DeLee Lying-In Hospital in Chicago, he committed a faux par and almost lost one of Dr. DeLee's pet cases during delivery. When it came time for the final examination in obstetrics he was confronted by the entire staff of the department and following a rather prolonged examination was informed that he would fail his course unless he would swear in the presence of his superiors and on a Bible that he would never practice obstetrics and gynecology. He has kept his promise! Dr. Klassen became a resident in thoracic surgery under Dr. George M. Curtis at the Ohio State Univer- sity in 1937 and, upon completion of his training in this new field, became a member of the staff of Research Surgery. With the illness of Dr. Curtis, Dr. Klassen became acting Chief of the Department of Research Surgery, which later was changed to the Division of Thoracic Surgery in the Department of Surgery. Thoracic surgery was in its infancy when Dr. Klassen entered the practice of this branch of surgery, and he was the first to successfully perform various thoracic surgical operations in Central Ohio. He is particularly proud of several youngsters who had tracheo-esophageal fistulas repaired successfully fourteen years ago. Also, he performed the second successful pneumonectomy on a four week old baby, the first one having been per- formed by Dr. Robert Gross. Dr. Klassen regards pediatric surgery as the most satisfying field of surgery and would enter this particular branch of surgery had he to do it over again. In 1947, Dr. Klassen devised a method for pulmonary biopsy to aid in the diagnosis of diffuse pulmonary lesions. His method was generally accepted and is widely used today. He is currently working on an artificial heart valve. Dr. Klassen and his co-workers received several na- tional awards for their work on the cinematographic demonstration of valvular heart action. I M Dr. Klassen and his wife Elvera have two children, Peter, a freshman at the Ohio State University, and Kristina, a student at the Columbus School for Girls. When time permits, Dr. Klassen indulges in his hobbies of sailing, golfing, fishing, and gardening. Described by a colleague as a man with profound honesty and good judgment, whose speed and un-excelled proficiency have made him one of the top-flight thoracic surgeons in the country, Dr. Klassen is admired by all who know him as a surgeon, as a teacher, and as a man. In the lecture room they are masters at extending five minutes worth of information into fifty minutes of diaphanous fluff. The material ranges from innocuous homilies to extravagantly irrelevant discourses on giant squid axones, kwashiorkor, and Aboriginal steatopygia. Frequently they are accused of relegating too much time to the seemingly less important aspects of medicine in lieu of the 'meat' of our chosen profession-but from them we garnered many 'nuggets', and to them we owe our deepest gratitude for helping to establish a firm foundation on which to construct our perpetually expanding edifice of medical knowledge. We opened our doors in September without the services of our beloved housemother, Maudie Hamilton, who retired after thirty-two years of devotion to her boys.'l In her absence, she certainly will never be forgotten. Our new head chef, Virginia White, has stepped in and taken over, and one may readily see the effects of her culinary talent on Bob Martin, Dan Wilhelm, and Lou Schmidt. In the world of intramural sports, AKK again fielded strong football, basketball, volleyball, softball, and tiddly-winks teams. jim Stretch Singer ably handled our athletic program, and, under his guidance, AKK went on to new glory on the courts and fields. Socially, the year was fun for everyone with hayrides, picnics, combo parties, and the usual spontaneous stags. You ought to see Dave Speed Stager operate on a hay- ride! Chuck Bongos Kayser, Tony Cool Milo, Ed Bass Fiddle Farkas, and Ernie Sax Mazzaferri added color and new musical sounds to many of our parties. One highlight of the year was the annual Christmas party, at which we had as guests fifteen underprivileged children. Santa Claus even put in an appearance and the youngsters, along with those still-believing actives as Dave Lifer and jerry Dennis, really had a ball. On the more serious side, we saw the inauguration of AKK's Fireside Rounds, with numerous prominent alums presenting informal sessions on some of the more practical and interesting aspects of good medicine. These discussions were well received by the actives, their families, and numerous friends. The old homefront at 199 West Tenth saw some real excitement one early morning when Tom Muscles Seitz and Ed Rocky Casper apprehended the University dis- trict's notorious Open Windown bandit as he was about to add another fraternity house to his string of daring burglaries. Yes, it's been a good year for AKK, and, as we look back, we want to thank Dr. Anthony Ruppersberg, our alumni advisor, for his help and advice. We're sorry to see so many seniors part and we wish them luck out amongst the disease-ridden popu- lace. Those of us remaining are looking forward to next year and more enjoyable times at AKK. .PL 4 . Ein U' ' E ki. The Beta Tau Chapter, at Ohio State University, is constantly working toward the perpetuation of these traditions and policies. The prin- cipal function which the fraternity plays in the lives of its members, however, is the moral, intellectual, and social advancement provided outside the academic confines. This year has been a full and enjoyable one for the Nu Sig's. The social schedule has been exciting with more of the program to look forward to. Physical improvements to the house consisted of a new roof and renovation of the third floor rooms. The Alumni, Wixfes' Club, and Mothers' Club again deserve special recognition for their continuing support of and participation in chapter activities. Since the newer members of the fraternity are stimulated to continue the progress and prosperity of the last few years, the seniors depart from Ohio State this spring with freedom from concern about the fraternity's future. This year shall surely serve as an inspiration to the active chapter, and the impetus given to the rolling rock of success will not have even stopped when the seniors return for their golden alumni reunion in the twenty-first century. Having sold the house wherein the Phi D E's resided for many years, we have begun a search for a more attractive home for the fraternity. The 1959 graduating class was honored with a social affair that highlighted the spring quarter. We also celebrated the successful effort of the intramural softball team in bringing to the fraternity the 1959 professional class championship. Fall quarter was enhanced by a dinner-dance that afforded the entire fraternity a pleasant evening. As always, Phi D E awaits the annual presentation of the Aaron Brown lectureship which will be delivered this year by Dr. George Moore. This will be one of the highlights in our social-academic program for the spring quarter. The 1959-60 season has succeeded in strengthening the alumni-active chapter re- lationship. A greater joint effort has been put forth into building Phi Delta Epsilon into a strong, successful fraternity. To the ,graduates of '60, we wish a most rewarding life in the practice of medicine. In this hail and farewell to you, may I express the hope that in the years ahead you will retain and cultivate your sensitivity,-sensitivity to the needs of your patients, your colleagues, your profession, and yourselves. If knowledge brings understanding, you should become increasingly sensitive to your patients' spoken and unspoken needs, and become more skillful in meeting them. You would make an envious reputation for yourselves and our School, if Ohio State Uni- versity graduates could become known for their sensitivity to their patients. Nurses must work with each other, with doctors and dietitians, with technicians and nurse aides. None of us knows the burden others are carrying nor how hard others are struggling to give of their best to their patients. A recent article indicated that one of the most valuable assets a person can develop is a gracious heart. A person with such a gift can speak the right word at the right moment, or, even without words, make the gesture which indicates that she is sensitive to the needs of others. The majority of you will take positions at once in hospitals and health departments where you are desperately needed. You have the education and skills possessed by only ten per cent of the nurses in this country. These ten per cent with baccalaureate preparation are quite unable to fill the thirty-three per cent of positions in nursing which need nurses with college preparation. So, keep sensitive to your professional re- sponsibilities. Lastly, keep sensitive to your own needs for continued growth, for broadened in- terests, and for richer relationships. Florence Nightingale abhorred stagnant women and insisted that if you were not making progress every year, every day, you were, in truth, going backwards. There is so much to learn and so many opportunities open to you, that boredom and dulling routine need have no place in your lives. As you progress professionally, keep sensitive to your own inner needs. Try to cultivate the art, urged by St. Paul, of thinking on whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely . . . Our best wishes and congratulations to each graduate. Mildred E. Newton 'x ANNE WILKING ALLEN Zazzexzfille, Ohio Pi Beta Phi zu , lf , H. , ogi5g': H H, .QM H wg? , l f Xe L I S.4y.,Jv N: gif!! THE PHENOMENA OF EARLY DEVELOPMENT ami THE FIRST AND SECOND YEARS OF LIFE THE FIRST AND SECOND YEARS or LIFE is a pictorial record, briefly captioned, of typical infant development intended for oliice use as a visual aid for parents when the physician discusses their child's physical and social development. THE PHENOMENA or EARLY DEVELOPMENT may be considered a companion ro THE FIRST AND SECOND YEARS. In order to learn how drugs affect this internal clock, SK8tF scientists use a test in which a monkey must hit a lever after an interval of 20 seconds to obtain food. When he is under the influence of certain drugs, time flies and he misses the pay-off period by hitting the lever too late. Other drugs make time drag and he misses the pay-off Deriod by hitting the lever too soon. Because one of the characteristics of many mental disorders is a distortion of the time sense, observing how drugs affect this primary psychological process may reveal valuable in- formation that will help SKSLF scientists in dis- covering effective treatments for mental illness.
