Dacz'ofcafzZeZ641 The great esteem in which we of the College of Dentistry hold Dr. Neal A. Harper became mani- fest during his serious illness of the past summer. According to Dr. Harper the messages, flowers, and visits which he received from his friends, colleagues, and students did him more good cthan any medication. He says that he is getting better with each passing day. However, he 15 already the best as far as we are concerned. A true and sincere gentleman, World traveler, and. a scholar whose string of degrees and honors is as impressive as the rows of ribbons on his uniform, Dr. Harper has been selected as Doctor of the Year by the Class of 1956. The future Brigadier-General was born in Kansas City, Missouri on August 22, 1392 and twenty- two years later received his D.D.S. from the St. Louis University College of Dentistry. ln 1917 young Dr. Harper was commissioned as a First Lieutenant in the Regular Army Dental Corps and rose to the rank of Brigadier-General by 1951. After serving with distinction for thirty-five years, General Harper retired in August of 1952. Just three weeks later, unable to tolerate a life of sedentary re- tirement, he joined the faculty of the College of Dentistry and started aback to school with the present Senior Class. - The Harper Family, headed by a pair of docs fDr. Anita W. Harper, B.A., M.A., M.D., is the other half of this prolific teamj, is following in the footsteps of the head of the house. Captain Neal A. Harper, Jr., Major Wilson C. Harper, and First Lieutenant Philip H. Harper are representing their father in the ranks, while his daughter, Anita, married an Army officer to hold up her part of the tradition. There are now thirteen grandchildren whose visits add to the activity in the family headquarters on Cambridge Blvd. A facet in the many-sided life of this gentleman, previously unknown to his students, is his interest and notoriety in the field of poetry. He has compiled one Volume entitled, Rhymes from the Ranks and also writes for any verse competitions that he hears of just for the fun of entering. The graduating seniors have Narrivedn at one of the high points in their lives with no little help from this man whom they will always remember as a special and personal friend and counselor. Here is .a man whom We all deeply respect and admire as a wonderful asset to the dental profession and to his country. NEAL A. HARPER, Brig. Gen. USA, Ret.
