Many students who are currently attending (Mo North¬ ern University are still asking this question. This small town of approximately 5300 people is not exactly a tourist attraction. Ada is located in the Northwest end cf the state and a few students jokingly say that Ada ' s cnly claim to fame is the fact that it is spelled the same way , forward and backward. However, a small town oah have ’ its advantages. The people of Ada are very friendly and are quite willing to help ONU students Furthermore, students can walk about any place they need to go in Ada Since the town is rather small, a few minutes walk will get them cff campus and to their favorite night spot in downtown Ada Opposite Page: Betsy Mocworda, Jenny Reed. Even though the building is located near the middle of campus, its pro¬ gramming includes everything but middle of the road events. Inside McIntosh Center stu¬ dents have discussed poetry with the famous poet, Maxine Kumin, listened to the music of Elizabeth Cotten during National Black His¬ tory Week, watched an all night comedy film festival, and even participated in a whale pull during Campus Chest. In addition to the spe¬ cial programming that occurs at this general building, McIntosh Center also houses the school cafeteria, the White Bear Inn, the Col¬ lege Bookstore, and the student operated Record Co-op. Living in a dorm at ONU in¬ cludes all the basic elements such as hall meetings, some studying, parties, and sleeping late on Saturday morn¬ ing. However, special events make liv¬ ing in a dorm more enjoyable. These special events may include volleyball, talent shows, or a Christmas party. Furthermore, when events get a little slow, there are always a few residents willing to play a joke on some unsus¬ pecting soul in order to liven the at¬ mosphere. Because of the university’s small size, faculty know their students. At ONU stu¬ dents are not just numbers. Through the person¬ al attention a student receives at the model pharmacy or in response to a question in lab, the faculty are demonstrating their concern for a student. During final’s week of the fall quarter, many faculty and members of the ad¬ ministration served a midnight breakfast for stu¬ dents. The midnight breakfast is a good example of faculty involvement. College professors could be stereotyped as very impersonal beings. But, because of their involvement in student contact activities, most of the faculty and administration at ONU are well known. However, this creates one problem. When you really want that second cup of coffee, do you call for the waiter or the Dean? Students can occupy their free time with a wide variety of activities. The diversions from the academic world include everything from informal basketball games to var¬ sity sports, greek life to hall parties, and computer games to cards. In order to participate in many events, membership in some special group is not necessary. The Campus Activities Board sponsors weekly events which are open to all students, and of course anyone can go as a spectator to college sports events. Therefore, students at ONU can and do participate in many activities. As the sign in the residence life office says, “More than a place to sleep.” So the dorm room is. It is also a place to study, to think, or to just listen to your favorite artist. Still others put bean bag chairs in their rooms to station, or even a television set to watch the programs that supplement those hard wooden chairs. The differences between roommates can be very minimal or very diverse. One person may like the room to be “plain”, that is, devoid of all posters, pennants, and other such things, and your roomate may be just the opposite. He (or she) may like the room all cluttered up with all sorts of stuff. Who knows what the average college stu¬ dents may bring to school with him to “make the room just a little bit” like the familiar room back home? One of the elements of college life is to compromise with your roomate, or goodbye happiness. ; ic • ’ 37 Saga Food Service is the Ohio Northern University food dispenser on campus. The students on campus have a choice of the 20 meal plan or the optional 15 meal plan. If the student wishes to always eat in the cafeteria for all meals, he chooses the 20 meal plan. If the student wants to skip a few meals, he chooses the 15 meal plan. Students SAGA SERVES ONU, Ada 38 who live off campus and those who live in Greek houses are exempt from the plan. Saga serves the University community and also the city of Ada through the cafeteria, the Wishing Well, and the White Bear Inn. The Wishing Well serves the food in a buffet style, and is very popular with the administrators, the professors, and other visitors to the campus. The White Bear Inn is the local hamburger joint on campus. It is very popular with the students and faculty alike, and is in¬ expensive if you just want a snack. Afterwards, a Presidential Selection Committee was formed to select a new president who had the qualifications to meet the expectations of the board. The committee consisted of the nine trustees, Jim Brown, Student Senate president; Chris Ward, Student Senate vice presi¬ dent; Dr. Kenneth Wildman, Faculty Senate presi¬ dent; George Miller, Faculty Senate vice president; and advisor. Dr., Novice Fawcett. The chairperson of the Board of Trustees was Dr. Walter English. The search for the new president began with-an advertisement that was placed in the June edition of the Chronicle of Fligher Education. Through various contacts across the country, Methodist church officials were also notified of the open position. By the deadline on June 24, 80 appli¬ cations were received by the committee. These applications, from as far west as Colorado. Dr. Freed seeks new ways to improve Northern’s policies. Dr. Freed, attending a Student Senate meeting, is very concerned about student welfare at Northern. 43 Freed named ONU president were reviewed and the committee narrowed their field to eight prospec¬ tive candidates. After several months of screening candidates and con¬ ducting interviews on and off campus, the selection committee chose three final candidates. Dr. Freed and his wife appreciate the opportunity to serve the University. Within four months, on September 15, 1979, Walter English, chairman of the university’s board of trustees, an¬ nounced the selection of a new presi¬ dent at Ohio Northern University. The board unanimously chose Dr. DeBow Freed, former President of Monmouth College, to become the university’s new president. “In electing Dr. Freed, after a thor¬ ough and intense search and interview process,” said Chairman English, “the Board is confident that this out¬ standing educator is the person best suited to guide Ohio Northern in the challenging years ahead.” Dr. English continued, “the trustees, faculty mem¬ bers, students serving on the Presi- dental Selection Committee and the Presidential Search Advisory Com¬ mittee have worked diligently to choose a person whose personal char¬ acteristics, experience, and vision bring the kind of leadership needed for ONU in the immediate future and in the years to come.” Dr. Freed, a native of Hendersonville and Gallatine, Tennessee, has bound¬ less credentials and a personal history that will certainly enhance Northern. He is a 1946 graduate of the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York. Dr. Freed, age 54, holds a master’s degree in nuclear science from the University of Kansas (1961), and the Ph.D. degree in nuclear sci¬ ence from the University of New Mex¬ ico (1965). He still has a special inter¬ est in teaching, and research and ad¬ ministration of nuclear energy. He has taught physics, nuclear engineering and has lectured on U.S. and foreign national security policy, political sci¬ ence and other related subjects. Dr. Freed has written a number of arti¬ cles, reviews, and reports on educa¬ tional and technical subjects. Another impressive fact is Dr. Freed’s recogni¬ tion by the US. government. He has on two occasions received the award of Legion of Merit, and also has re¬ ceived the Legion of Honor from the government of Iran. Dr. Freed’s previous academic posts include being a professor in charge of the elective program and operations of the physics department at the West Point Academy in New York. He then moved to the vicinity of Alliance, Ohio, where he served as Dean of Mount Union College and where he was responsible for academic and stu- 44 Dr. Harold A. Prior to accepting the presidential po¬ sition at ONU, Dr. Freed served as president at Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois for five years. “Since he became president in 1974, the 127-year-old liberal arts college has been emphasizing its historic role as a strong church-related institution. During this period the college’s tradi¬ tional strength of good teaching has been heightened, enrollment has stabi¬ lized, and visiting accreditation teams have strongly endorsed the direction of institutional affairs. The College has operated with a balanced budget for the last four years, and giving has doubled since 1974. Assets have in¬ creased annually, and the campus has been made more attractive. A sense of community on campus has increased, with improved faculty and student morale,” Dr. Freed’s decision to become ONU’s ninth president is a benefit to Northern, and the Board of Trustees is very confident that Dr. Freed is the person best suited to guide Ohio Northern through the challenging years in the future. Responding to his appointment as president. Dr. Freed said, “Mrs. Freed and I are delighted to be joining the Ohio Northern University community. From our first contact we have been impressed with the dedication and loyalty to the University of the stu¬ dents, faculty, staff, and trustees whom we have met. I look forward with enthusiasm to my new responsi¬ bilities at Ohio Northern.” 45 The initials CAB, do not stand for the Ohio Northern taxicab. They stand instead for the Campus Activities Board. Campus Activities Board sponsored quite a few concerts this year. The concerts ranged from one man concerts to jazz concerts to local rock bands to the Pure Prairie CAB Sponsors League concert and the Dark Star concert. These concerts sometimes were held in conjunction with another group on campus and also solely by CAB. All in all, these concerts were well staged, and the student body enjoyed themselves immensely. The concerts were held in a variety of differ¬ ent places. A few of the concerts were held at Lehr Concerts 50 Auditorium, others at Macintosh Center, and some on the lawn of Macintosh. Still others were held in the activities room of Macintosh. Quite a few were held in the Dead Bar, and the Pure Prairie League concert was staged at King Horn Center. The concerts were a way for the Ohio Northern students to just enjoy themselves and take a much needed break from their studies. They were generally well attended, with the Pure Prairie League concert being a complete sellout. Their purpose was just an opportunity for both the performers and the audience to express themselves through the songs that they sang, and the instrumental portions of the con¬ certs also provided delightful entertainment. For the au¬ dience, it was a very good time, and also was a way to show their appreciation for the performers. 51 Phys. Ed. Students Getting All Wet Each student enrolled at Ohio Northern University must take three hours of physical education. The courses help the students enrolled know the basics of each game, and to participate to the extent of his or her abilities, and also to have fun while doing so. Some of the courses that students could take for phys ed credit are Social Dance, Archery, Badminton, Gymnastics, Beginning Tennis, Intermediate Tennis, Volleyball, Soccer and Softball, Recreational Games, Beginners Golf, Begin¬ ners Swimming, Billiards, Square and Folk Dance, Paddle Sports, Weight Training and Physical Conditioning, Tum¬ bling and Trampoline, Varsity Football, and other Varsity sports such as Cross Country, Soccer, Volleyball, Basket¬ ball, Tennis, Track, Golf, Softball, Baseball, Wrestling, and Swimming. For instance, in Paddle Games, you learn how to play not only handball, but also table tennis, otherwise known as ping-pong. In Weight Training and Physical Conditioning you learn how to take care of your body through weight lifting and other body building techniques. In the different classes, there are different games that are WONU: The To Station You Can Turn Dan Braverman, professional radio consultant, checks out the best possible location for a transmitter in Founders Hall. Students can expect to hear a lot from WONU, Northern’s radio station of the future. There will be a variety of programs planned to appeal to the different interests of the students. The idea for a radio station on campus has been a subject of dis¬ cussion for many years. It was not until recently, however, that an ad hoc committee looked into the idea and expressed their interest to the Board of Trustees. Realizing that there was a real interest in having a radio station, the Board commissioned Dr. Wilhelm, vice president for academic affairs, to devise an ONU Radio Advisory Committee to study the feasibility of a radio station on the campus. Fur¬ thermore, this committee went through a professional management and consulting firm who then looked into Northern’s facilities and gave ad¬ vice on what could be done to build and maintain a radio station on campus. Afterwards, the firm’s findings were reported to the Board of Trustees at their February board meet¬ ing, At that point, the Board approved the proposal for the radio station and allocated money for the construction and operation of the station. Dan Reid was selected as the station manager by Nils Reiss, interim advisor for the radio station. Reid said that he did not anticipate any major prob¬ lems in the organization and manage¬ ment of the station because he will be working with a competent staff. The management staff includes Dan Reid, station manager, Wendy Tiburski, pro¬ gram director, Ellen Schwartz, busi¬ ness manager controller, Glen Sutton, chief engineer. Rich May, news direc¬ tor, Jack Jeffery, sports directer, Scott Griswold, music directer, John Kline, chief announcer, Rick Calich, sales di- recter, and John Taylor, traffic continuity directer. These stu¬ dents were selected by Reid and a group within the Radio Advisory Committee. According to Reid, the goal of the management staff is to please all the students on campus. He explained that if the staff aims at pleasing everyone, they will please more people, than if they adopted the attitude that they could not please everyone and shauld not make an at¬ tempt. Reid also noted that Nils Reiss has been “instrumental in the success of the station so far,” “Me has been a great source of advice and he has the student’s interest in mind,”he added. Reid pointed out that the purpose of the station is not only to educate stu¬ dents, but also to entertain and inform students of upcoming events and ac¬ tivities on campus. WQNU is expected to be a success in the future. 56 . . i ' j p ' ki ' i ' M •• y- ■,?! 58 59 Theatre At ONU Plays The ONU theatre department presented three plays this school year. The University Singers and The Added Attraction were conducted by Dennis Kratzer. Mr. Blair conducted the String Ensemble, while Judy Harrison directed Chorus. The Percussion Ensemble was directed by Richard Sherrick, and the Chapel Choir was conducted by Dr. John Peterson. Finally, the Flute Choir was conducted by Lucy Hill. Congratulations to all of the various performing groups on campus for a superb job this school year. Best of luck for next year. 63 Study Habits Study habits of the students at Northern are as diverse as the people themselves. There are people who do not study at all, it seems, and receive all A’s, and there are people who don’t study at all and are just here for the parties. Other students have to study very, very, very hard to get as good grades as the so-called “brains”. 64 To be smart you first have to apply yourself to your books, not just to “get by”. Fall, Autumn, Winter, Spring, and Summer. Each season has its own varying characteristics. For instance. Fall is a season of change. It bridges Summer, and also Winter. The main characteristics of the season are leaves falling from the trees, the raking of leaves, the beautiful sight of leaves falling from the different trees, and also, the leaves chang¬ ing colors from green to any color under the rainbow that Seasons Bring Change to ONU . 5 VI o J HCt ■V ? you could imagine. The season is also noted for a gradual temperature drop from 60’s and low 70’s in early Septem¬ ber to 20’s, 30’s and low 40’s in early November. Also, late in the season, you may find your first snowfall. Turning to Winter ... Winter is one of the most beautiful seasons of the year. This season is noted for Snow, plenty of it. The first snowfall is particully nice, because of the uniqueness. This is the time of snow shovels, clearing of driveways, bliz¬ zards (sometimes), snowmen, snow forts, snow angels, tun¬ nels, snowball fights, all types of winter clothing, such as mittens, gloves, hats, long underwear, lined coats and jackets, ski caps, boots, snow pants, and other such clothes. It is also the season for hot chocolate and marshmallows, and Christmas Vacation. 67 r I Spring is a season of change. It is the “buffer” season between Winter and Summer. It contrasts the bitter cold of winter and the steamy hotness of summer. It’s a very rainy Spring Brings Change season, and it is the very lethal season of tornadoes, which can destroy buildings, roads, but most of all human lives. Spring’s temperatures are rude. One day is very hot, and the next day can be bitterly cold. It is also the last quarter in the year. The only problem with spring, besides thing: heat, heat, and more heat. Sometimes there is a the weather, is the wait for summer ... respite of much needed rain, but not very often. Some activities that you may want to work at are swimming. Summer is many things for many people. For some it is a diving, baseball, softball, golf, jogging, tennis, loafing much needed vacation from college; for others it’s a means around the house, odd jobs like lawn mowing, paper to get to college. For still others, it means summer school, delivery, janitorial work, and doing housework. Hand in Hand “Hand in Hand” was chosen as the theme of Black History Week (Febru¬ ary 3-8, 1980) by the Concerned Black Students (CBS). Under their president Beverly Mack, CBS planned a week of events in which the Black students tried to stress an awareness of cultural views that are an important part of their race. Mack said that Black History Week should have displayed a moment in time during which everyone focused on the meaning of Black people and their history. Also, it was hoped that the student body and the faculty would examine their judgments con¬ cerning ideas and views of Black stu¬ dents rather than engaging in ster- otyping. As a whole. Mack feels that the stu¬ dent body enjoyed most of the events. It was a different approach from what Mrs Freed listens attentively to CBS President Bev Mack at banquet W k... ft w ■ most of the students were familiar with simply because they were not exposed to this type of programming in the past. However, compared to the participation in most of the special events given on ONU campus. Black History Week worked out very well. “A lot of compliments were given on a day to day basis and also after the week finished its course,” Mack ob¬ served. The week was highlighted by the per¬ formance of folk singers Elizabeth Cotton and Mike Seeger. People en¬ joyed their performances and the at¬ mosphere was very relaxed. Another highlight during the week was the guest speaker at the Black History Week Banquet, James Rose. He is the author of Black Genesis and is the foremost authority on ethnic gen- eology. Rose presented a fascinating lecture and workshop on geneology and the techniques all ethnic groups can use to trace their family trees. The main goal of CBS is to provide an opportunity for all students to become involved in activities which pertain both to culture and education at Ohio Northern University. The role of CBS reflects a minority group trying to pro¬ vide activities for themselves as well as other students on campus. It is through group cooperation that we (the students of ONU) will be able to walk “Hand in Hand” in the future. Elizabeth Cotton listens as other musicians play their instruments. Mike Seeger plays his banjo with other musicians in “jam session”. 71 Have a nice day! . .A. Just look around and one notices evidence of Greek life everywhere at ONU and in Ada. Regardless of the time or season, Greek letters are exhibited daily as each Greek proudly displays his or her symbols. Throughout the dorms, around campus, and even in “downtown” Ada, one can hear the tunes of Greeks’ songs echoing all around. These are just two of the ways that Greeks let everyone know that they are a part of ONU’s life. Lively parties at the frat houses, spur-of-the-moment water-fights, and fun-filled (3) pranks are other ways. Though it may look like it, Greek life is not all fun and jgames: each Greek has responsibilities to his house, •whether it involves rushing or serving on one of the many committees or holding an office. In addition, many Greeks isan be found involved in all aspects of campus life, serving in both positions of leadership and as club members. Greeks work hard all year sponsoring marathons and such for philanthropies and performing other service projects. .411 in all, Greeks tend to make life at ONU a little more interesting; the past year was no exception and proved rewarding to each Greek at ONU. The schoolyear saw many house improvements including a new T.V. room. The little sis program remained quite strong and was officially installed during the year. Several brothers participated in O.N.U. sports such as football, basketball, baseball, and track. Special recognition was brought to Brother Pat Koester as he was named “All- American” in basketball. On the intramural side, the “Apes” were quite successful as they were basketball and softball champs. Spring Quarter was highlighted by formal which was held at Hueston Woods. The “Apes” elected Sara Wranik as their new sweetheart. Alpha Omicron Pi (Identification Unavailable) The 1979-80 schoolyear proved quite successful for the Kappa Pi chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi with the initiation of twenty-three new sisters. AOII’s were active in many student organizations including Student Senate, Pan-Hel, theatre productions, varsity sports, intramurals, Lil Sis programs, and numerous honoraries. Fall Quarter marked the third annual AOII-STE Haunted House philanthropic’project; the AOII’s share of the proceeds were donated to the Arthritis Foundation. Annual events of Winter Quarter included the Delt Wine and Cheese party and the Winter Rose Formal, which was held at the Holiday Inn in Perrysburg. The new sweetheart, Scott Syler, was recognized at that time. Participation in Campus Chest proved worthwhile as once again, the AOII Jail was one of the highest revenue booths of the carnival. One of the highlights of the schoolyear was Greek Week. The AOlTstook first place in the K.Y Car Rally and had a remarkable performance in the PMD Talent Show. To close the week, Patti Tarrant was voted the 1980 Greek Week Queen. The annual AOII Parents’ Day and Senior Banquet brought the year to a close. — . Alpha Sigma Phi The brothers of Alpha Sigma Phi enjoyed an eventful school year. Once again, ONU felt the presence of Sigs on many interscholastic teams, especially football. Brother Steve Barney, the current president, received special baseball league honors, both career and season, for stealing bases. Spring Quarter proved to be successful for ONU’s Sigs. Hosting the Alpha Sigma Phi State Conclave highlighted the quarter; in addition, the IFC All-Sports trophy returned to the Sigs after a year’s absence. For the first time, the Sigs captured first place in the PMD Talent Show during Greek Week. Several Sigs received recognition at the annual Senior Banquet: Rob Coll was named Greek Scholar; Dude McGarry, Greek Athlete; and Don Mathie, Greek Man of the Year. Hood presented the 1979football awards at the fall sports banquet. Four special awards were presented at the recognition banquet along with 47 letters and 45 freshman cerfiticates. The special awards were presented to senior Rob Coll, the Thomas J. Smull Academic Award; senior Chris Kubbs, the Harry S. Siegel Outstanding Offensive Player Award; senior Jeff Bok, the Lewis F. Nemec Outstanding Defensive Player Award; and Kevin Bicking the Clyde A. Lamb Outstanding Freshman Award. According to ONU’s Wally Hood, “We were real close to hav¬ ing a great season, but instead we had to settle for just a good season (5-3-l).The outcome may have been different had sen¬ ior tailback Richard McGarry not been hurt in the Denison game.” “The outlook is bright for next year,” Hood said. “If we have the same success recruiting that we did last year, we should again challenge for the Ohio Athletic Conference race.” 156 ; yv? mm 158 0 r - Soccer Depth, depth, depth. It’s like a broken record. Every coach wants it, needs it, and swears by it. According to Head Coach Dr. Amar Bhattacharya, “depth means the difference between a winner and a loser.” The Ohio Northern soccer team finished the 1979 season with a 5-6-1 record. The losing season was the second since Bhattacharya and soccer came to ONU. The first losing sea¬ son was in the team’s first year of competition in 1975. The 1979 season did feature a lot of injuries and could be the cause cf failure. However, when the injuries occurred, the Polar Bears had no bench to step in and do the job. “You’ve got to expect some injuries,” said Bhattacharya. “It’s as simple as that. The optimum is to have a strong bench so the team doesn’t depend on any one player. This year we didn’t have that.” “The biggest advantage with good depth,” said Bhatta¬ charya, “is you can be more disciplined with the team. In soccer you need a strong discipline. No one player can do it all. Even the best player needs a strong supporting group.” Freshman Dave Fink was the Polar Bear’s leading scorer. 162 a ' . I-a- 9M|n x 1 ■ fjPffflffiT «Bp v ? The early predictions came true, but only after a series of discouraging events. ONU’s all-time best distance runner Mike Becraft ran only three races all year. Although the senior from George¬ town, Ohio won each time out, it was difficult to watch the nation’s runner-up in 1978 (Division 111) go through the motions. Even at less than 100%, Becraft continually out¬ distanced his opponents. Finally the pain became so severe that the former Ohio high school champ had to seek medical attention. The Cleveland Clinic diagnosed the leg injury and promptly scheduled surgery for December 7. Mike is ex¬ pected to be out from four to twenty-one weeks, depending on the severity of the damage. Losing Becraft so early in the season could have been disastrous to Ohio Northern’s consecutive winning streak. The team did not fold as some suspected, and the dual meet victory streak continued until the final meet of the regular season. The Polar Bears saw their streak come to an end against Otterbein College 21-40, after 32 straight wins. Ending the season with a 13-1 mark helped propel the Polar Bears into the conference meet with a lot of desire. Tabbed as being the best ONU team ever, the harriers set out to prove themselves. The top seven ran close to the leaders the first two miles before the elements, especially the cold wind, took their toll on the ONU runners. ONU ran well, but placed fifth in the OAC meet with 115 points, only one point back of Mt. Union, which qualified for the NCAA Regionals. The conference coaches took a vote after the race and unanimously chose to recommend Ohio Northern as an at-large team in the regionals. The NCAA honored the recommendation and the Polar Bears ran in the regional event as a team. Only the top four teams and the top five individuals automatically qualify for the meet. Seniors Dan Schoelein (Ft. Recovery) and Bill Chmelik (Chesterland) were the most consistent UNO runners on the season. Schoelein took command of the team after Becraft’s injury and led the squad to the finish line in all but two of ONU’s final five races. Chmelik, who looks like a tight end in football, was the top finisher in the other races. “We had great leadership and that has a lot to do with our success during the year,” said Head Coach Gale Daughtery. 166 VJpK t rf v 1 f v Y • -xv ]• 1 ' V r r ' L , ' « ' -v • A ) t!i , 1 ® p . .. ...■-,- ' ‘ I ■ :. -. v - ■ ■ -, ' K J Women’s Swimming 170 W - - — j , ; 1 r 1 fel- ' r - “This marks the beginning,” said Ohio Norhtern Head tournament with an ankle sprain. The Polar Bears, ranked number two in the NCAA’s final Division III poll, narrowly missed cracking the nation’s top 15 scoring teams with its uptempo passing games offense, but the team did finish ninth in the nation for scoring margin with a 12.2pergame average. As always, the Polar Bears, coached by Gale Daugherty, kept the defensive pressure on at all times giving up only 66.2 points per game. This percentage ranked the Polar Bears sixth in the country in defensive field goal percentage. The 1979-80 season will not be forgotten soon. It was a year filled with big victories, but none so sweet as ONU’s 84-71 drubbing of the nation’s top ranked team, Wittenberg, on a neutral court for the OAC championship. Along the way, ONU won the Northern Division regular season crown and the OAC Northern Division Tournament title. Appearing in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Tournament for the second time in the last six years was an honor, and the team demonstrated its ability in the first round game with Calvin College when the Polar Bears won 92-90 in triple overtime. Calvin led for most of the first half and all of the second half. Pat Koester’s selection to the all-American team, making him the first all-American in the school’s 70 year basketball history, capped off the never to be forgotten season. 178 V. y V| 1 V© y] if ' 1 . With the victory, Ohio Northern Head Coach Dick West was named “Coach of the Year” in the Ohio Athletic Conference by his fellow coaches. The Polar Bears were 17-6 overall and 8-0 against league opponents in dual competition. Senior team captain Rick Peiffer and junior Brad Beaman won individual titles for the Polar Bears. The victory gave the 142 pound Beaman his second consecutive league title. Both Peiffer and Beaman represented the Polar Bears and the OAC in the NCAA Division III National Championships in New London, Connecticut at the Coast Guard Academy. Much of the success of this year’s ONU team lies in the strength of its freshman class. Although short on collegiate experience, four newcomers participated in their first OAC Championship. The result was two seconds and two thirds. 184 Of ZZZZ 1 w A ph 7 Bap MP I Vl Pl f) f ' - A n t n uswtmu. Team Places Third The Ohio Northern University women’s basketball team capped oft ' a very successful season with a third place finish in the Ohio Association of Intercollegiate Sports for Women state finals. The lady Polar Bears attained this third place finish by downing Defiance College, 66-58, in the consola¬ tion game. Three Ohio Northern players were selected to the all-tournament team: Denise Callahan, Alicia Bell, and Vicki Mauk. The strong showing at the state finals gives Ohio Northern a 17-8mark and left Head Coach Gayle Lauth extremely opti¬ mistic about next season. Of course, at this point, most coaches are optimistic, but Coach Lauth has a lot of sub¬ stance for her bright outlook. Of the 12 players on ONU’s tournament squad, only four were seniors. Also, this past season’s junior varsity team was unbeaten in 11 contests, giving Coach Lauth a wealth of talent to choose from next year. 186 tat i 4 i • :i -ft ' -4—i ■ • f ; ’ , 1 1 ■ 1 . His time qualified him to run in the NCAA Division III Meet in Napersville, Illinois, on May 29- 31 . Also attending the national meet was freshman Jesse Marlow. All in all the trio helped set seven single season team records (AB’s-1,200; Hits-357; 3B-18; HR-33; SB-155; and BB- 154). Batting sixth in the lineup, the switch hitting Thompson set an ONU record for hits in a season with 48. Thompson’s .350 batting average was second on the team and played a key factor in his second team all-Ohio Athletic Conference selec¬ tion. Doug Rosenbauer, who was a third team all district IV selec¬ tion and a second team all Ohio Athletic Conference center- fielder, left his mark on the ONU record books. He now holds the record for home runs in a season with seven and at-bats with 140. He is second in RBI for a season with 31, but fresh¬ man Mark Storrer had 32 this season. Doug is now third on the list of doubles in a season with eight. The centerfielder began the season as the starting first base- man. When ONU’s outfield made a few costly errors. Head coach Herb Strayer wasted no time in getting the sure handed Rosenbauer into centerfield. Besides making five outstanding on the run catches in the OAC and NCAA Regional Cham¬ pionships, he fielded a nifty .974. Mark Thompson, a junior, handled the third base duties. Thompson was third on the team in stolen bases with a perfect 19 for 19. He also scored 25 runs. The iron man of the Polar Bears this season was Lance Bucholtz. He caught almost every inning, 300 of the team’s 306, this season. The sophomore caught fire in the last part of the season and hit five home runs. On the season, Bucholtz hit .259 and drove in 21 runs. He moved into fifth on the single season RBI list. Defensively, he threw out 18 of 55 runners. Bucholtz fielded a solid .966. Ohio Northern recorded one of its most successful season ever this year. It set the school (men’s] record for wins in a season with 29. The team won the Ohio Athletic Conference Northern Division regular season title for the fourth time in the last seven years. It also placed third in the Mideast Regional. 19 -” i | Another fine season has come and gone for the ONU fast-pitch softball team. This marked the second state title the softball team had won in the last four years. ONU finished the campaign with a 15-13 record. The Polar Bears, coached by Gayle Lauth, recorded a 14-5 against other Division III schools. Sophomore Pam Canady was ONU’s top hurler with a 9-6 mark. This season the lefthander had some help with the mound duties as Jo Roth, a sophomore, did an admirable job in her first year of collegiate pitching. She had a 6-7 record. Title Comes to ONU Graduating from this year’s team is three-fourths of the infield —shortstop Alicia Bell, third baseman Julie Lenhart, and first baseman Brenda Reichelderfer. The lone loss in the outfield will be Vicki Mauk. This was the first year for separate divisions (Divisions I, 11,11 l)in women’s softball. In the past, all schools have competed in the same level.
