The scene opens: it is dawn. Silence reigns over the campus. No one is stirring . . . no, there is a sound, a rhythmic tapping, slowed by an occasional pause. Some poor slob's got a term paper due. Then, between six and six-thirty, the chorus begins. Seven hundred alarm clocks go off in near unison. Grunts, groans, and curses fill the air, and, one by one, the alarms cease. It is day. A mist settles over the slowly lightening campus as dozens of showers go at full blast, the early risers stand sleepily amid streams of hot water water that is subject to flushing toilets and maximum usage. The dorms gradually become filled with pseudo-activity. Already awake students struggle into coats, preparing to venture out into the morning cold. They pass slow risers still stumbling sleepily toward the shower, which by now is considerably colder. The entire morning crowd has just one ultimate goal: breakfast. Lukewarm eggs, cold toast, orange juice, and coffee. Lots of coffee. The scene changes: it is nearly time for class. In the lounge in McIntosh can be heard snatches of conversation: You study? Naw, you?,' just the electron configurations . . . N I-Ieis testing us on those? Oh, you gotta be kidding . . . No, he announced it Friday. Lemme see yotu' notes a second . . . 'I Class begins: lectures, tests, discussions, lectures, quizzes, lectures, reports, lec- tures, and finally, lecttu'es. It is time for lunch. Again, the cafeteria fills with eager souls hungering for sustenance, or the next best thing to get them through the afternoon. After lunch, we once again hear conversation in the loiuigez HoW'd you do?', Oh man, he shafted us! He didn't test us over the notes. It was all out of the book. Howid you do? b I thought it was pretty easy. You ready for the econ quiz? He's giving a quiz today? I thought it was gonna be Wednesday . . . Naw, he said on Friday that it would be today. Lemme see your notes a second . . . H Again there a1'e classes and more lectures. A little knowledge is a dange1'ous thing, but a lot of knowledge can be a definite handicap. Now it is time for supper. Inside the cafeteria lines lengthen and shorten, silverware and glasses clink, and hundreds of voices talk at once. In the lounge again, we hea1': Want to go down to jerry's and Beartrap? N aw, you go ahead. I can,t blow off tonightf, The scene shifts: downtown Ada. Here we find the students, ever seeking, this time in search of the brew. Music blares, pinball machines flash, and pitchers clink. Yeah, I missed Friday, what's it to you? I got three cuts coming . . . H We had a quiz Friday. Uh oh . . . U Gradually, silence envelopes the dorms, the frats, and the town. Silence once again dominates the campus then, again, comes that tapping sound, this time more frenzied. The slob got an extension on his paper.
