Louise Hastings. It is not often that one finds an educator who is as enthusiastic and as competent in her work as she is, Many hours of hard work have gone into the accomplishment of this yearbook, and it is our hope that you will find the efforts worthy of the university which it represents. Special thanks are extended to Lee Repassy and Jeff Dick, our student photographers, to James Busch of Marion, our professional photographer, t o Mr. Belch, the advisor, t o Ray Laakaniemi, director of public information, and to those of you who have helped make this publication possible. You may find many things in this book which are different and which vou may not particularly like; however, you must remember that each succeeding yearbook carries with it a series of attitudes, ideas, and variations which represent the editor ' s attempt to extend a new interpretation of the college life which is representative of the student body of Ohio Northern University. This is your book, as it is your university. You may accept it or reject it; you may credit it or criticize it; you may deem it worthy or faulty. We present your book to you, for your judgment, consideration, and accep¬ tance . Sincerely, Barbara McElhaney Editor 4 DEDICATION Dr. A. Louise Hastings became a member cf the faculty at ONU in 1957, bringing with her a wide variety of experiences in the literary field. She obtained her A.B., M.A., and Ph.D. in English at Indiana University, where she had also, been an instructor in composition and literature survey. Aside from various teaching positions she has held. Dr. Hastings has spent 7 years writing and editing for newspapers, 3 years in the advertising department of Harvard University Press, and 5 years doing research at Harvard in American Literature with a fellowship from the American Philosophical Society. As an undergraduate. Dr. Hastings was a member cf a literary club called Vagabonds which founded the literary magazine The Vaga¬ bond, which was later called the Folio, and is still published today. She has also published articles in The New England Quarterly, The Bulletin of School and Education and The Emerson Society Quarterly. Here on campus, Dr. Hastings has a busy schedule, teaching ad¬ vanced English courses, such as Shakespeare, Chaucer, and Milton, as well as American literature and English composition. She has been the force behind many traditional “Shakespeare Nights” and deserves much credit for this year’s fine celebration of “The Bard’s 400th.” Dr. Hasting’s sparkling personality is ever-present, whether in class or walking across campus. Having a vivid interest in her students and in her subject matter, she seems to transmit her own love of the literary field to those with whom she comes into contact. 5 - _ -T ”, Lehr Memorial Hall, Main Administration Building Dukes, Pharmacy Building M •SJfi r t E i- ■ l ' j F Ml 3 i Ji 1, « E3 | 1 ' 1 yi gl| fr•. v - s pH. j 4 ; ' _ — Tf - ' ■ i J T K , P r$! j iISbw ' TfcSSK-1 • I Sometimes the sun shines in Ada! 12 The Lamp-post, a popular meeting place for students and faculty alike. Dr. McIntosh is always ready with a cheerful smile and hello as he crosses the campus. A great deal cf credit must be bestowed upon Dr. McIntosh for his fine leadership in getting ONU’s re¬ cent development plan cff the ground. The opening, in Janu ary, cf the University Union marks the “culmina¬ tion of a dream of ten years.” PRESIDENT 26 President McIntosh, with the able assistance of Vice-president Eakin, strives to uphold the aims and purposes of Ohio Northern University: to graduate students imbued with Christian ideals, accom¬ plished in scholastic achievement, inspired with a desire to contribute to the good of mankind, and committed to a way of life that will result in a maximum of personal and social worth. The theatre division of the English department is responsible for the theatrical presentations each year. Working in close correlation with Northern Players and Theta Alpha Phi and under the direction of Betty J. Bartlett, the majors within this department strive to produce and present worthwhile plays to the student body. Miracle Worker and Under Milkwood were the spring quarter presentations. Androcles and the Lion was presented fall quarter and during the Homecoming celebration. Servant of Two Masters was the lab pro¬ duction directed by Ron Myers as his senior project; this was the first winter quarter play. Macbeth , pre¬ sented during winter quarter, was the major production for the year. ONU’s thespians traveled to many area schools to present Red Shoes, the annual “kiddie” show, during fall and winter quarters. The theatre draws from many areas for crews and actors, representing the entire university, faculty and students alike, in many productions. Curtain Call, The Cast MACBETH The Globe ' Winifred Ainslee, Lady Macbeth The performance of Macbeth, marking the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare, was the major Winter Quarter theatre production at ONU. Directed by ONU Theatre Director Miss Betty Bartlett, the play cast included students, faculty, faculty wives, and ad¬ ministrators in addition to the four New York profes¬ sionals—Moultrie Patten, Winifred Ainslee, Angus Cairns, and Richard Lederer. The set, designed by James Ruef, instructor in speech and theatre, is believed to be the only replica of the Globe Theatre in Ohio. This set was built for a more historically correct atmosphere and provided var¬ ious levels for action. It was built and erected through the combined efforts of ONU Maintenance, members of the theatre department, and students in theatre work¬ shop. “Standing Room Only” prevailed in Lehr Audito¬ rium during the five performances. Through the com¬ bined efforts of Director Bartlett and her cast and crews, this production was deemed both profound and praise-worthy by most theatre-goers of the area and the campus. Under the direction of Dr. James Udy, with music supplied by the ONU Chorus-Choir, the chapel program furthers the University’s goal of graduating students imbued with Christian ideals and inspired with a desire to contribute to the good of mankind through achieving maximum personal and social worth. The Chapel service is non-sectarian worship, and the student as¬ semblies include informative, entertaining, and cultural programs. Religion-in-Life Week, generally held during Fall Quarter, was set back this year to Spring Quarter since Dr. Udy arrived on campus too late to organize a worthwhile program for Fall Quarter. Several religious organizations on campus supplement the program and are under the jurisdiction of the Religious Council, headed by Dr. Udy. These organizations contribute in both chapel programs and local churches of their affiliation. Scripture Reading, Dr. Udy Photo by Jim Busch, Marion, Ohio ORGANIZATIONS Seated: P. Delta Zeta, the largest national sorority, was founded at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, on October 24, 1902. Zeta Kappa Chapter, established on our campus May 16, 1959, is one of 144 chapters. Delta Zeta was the first social sorority to go national on this cam¬ pus. The goals of Delta Zeta are to create lasting bonds of friendship among its sisters, to maintain high standards socially, morally, and intellectually, and to develop the abilities of its members to their highest potential. Delta Zeta participates enthusiastically in campus-wide events, stu¬ dent government, sports, and professional and honorary organiza¬ tions. This year, Delta Zeta candidates for May Day who won the elec¬ tions were Vicki Carr, Louise Lauck, and Ginger Gabriel. Laura Armstrong represented her sorority and her university as Homecom¬ ing Queen. The sorority supports a Greek boy through the Foster Parents’ plan as a local philanthropy project. 186 Row I: T. The Delta Theta Chapter at Ohio Northern University received its charter on October 9, 1959, being the one-hundred-fifth chapter to be installed. There are now 109 chapters throughout the United States and Canada. Zeta Tau Alpha participates enthusiastically in campus-wide activi¬ ties, student government, sports, and professional and honorary or¬ ganizations. A weekend workshop at Indian Lake, three all-campus dances, the pledge dance, White Violet Formal, and mother-daughter banquet make up the annual Zeta-sponsored activities for its members and their friends. In addition to these sorority functions, the Zetas partici¬ pate in Homecoming and May Day activities, Greek Sing, and Cam¬ pus Chest. The girls turn their thoughts to those less fortunate and collect clothing, money, and food for the needy on “Beggars’ Night,” give to the Allen County Children’s Home, and support the Zeta Tau Alpha philanthropy—cerebral palsy. This fratern¬ ity was founded at New York University in 1913, and the Kappa Chapter here at ONU was chartered in 1923. The chapter sponsors many social affairs throughout the year. This past year the fraternity was successful when they sponsored an open house during the 1963 May Day festivities. Bagles, one of the most delicious and well-known Jewish delicacies, were served, and enter¬ tainment and music were provided by a band quartet of freshman boys. Also, numerous house dances and parties, Homecoming activities honoring the alumni and a banquet for Parents’ Day highlight the activities list of the year. The chapter is also active in the I.F.C. and May Day weekends. One of the biggest affairs this year was the Winter and Spring Formals, not to mention that the fraternity had the distinction of having the famous Count Basie and his group for dinner before a concert in October. Everything is, of course, not all fun and no work. The fraternity also strives for scholastic achievement and takes an active part in religious functions on campus, thus maintaining a busy calendar school year. ALPHA EPSILON PI Row 1: D. Frames, M. This fraternity was founded at Yale University on December 6, 1845, and the oldest Ohio Northern Fraternity Chapter, Gamma Alpha, has existed here since January 17, 1942. The past year the Alpha Sigs have been seen repairing and fixing up the house and also having fun with their new Collie mascot, “Augie Doggie.” Then, too, the Alpha Sigs remain quite active in several other fields. In the sports department, the Fraternity claims 11 members on the ONU Polar Bear Football team. Last May Day— 1963—the boys won first place in the annual Frat Frolics, Tug-of- War, and Bike Race. So far in the Fall and Winter sports, they have placed high in both softball and volleyball. Alpha Sigma Phi is also active in Student Council, Choir, UBOG, and has several Lima Hall Counselors. It also sponsors the Sig- Olympics, an afternoon of field events for sorority women during May Day. The chapter enjoys social activities, such as hayrides, house dances. Campus Chest, and the “Spring Talisman Rose Formal.” The dances, parties, athletics, and other social functions have served to make this past year fun, helpful, and fulfilling. 195 Seated: P. In 1920 members of the Engineers’ Triangle Club at Ohio Northern were initiated into Alpha Eta Chapter. The faculty members who are brothers in their bond are Chapter Supervisor, Dr. Robert Hilliard, Chairman of the Department of History and Political Science; Dean Lawrence Archer, and Instructor Frank Farrington cf the College of Engineering; Dr. Karl Roider, Chairman of the De¬ partment of Music; and Instructor Gerald Messick of the Department of Physics. As a social fraternity, it has regular house dances as well as the annual Spring and Winter Formals, pledge dance. Bowery Brawl, sweater dances, and Alumni banquets at Homecoming and Parents’ Day. The Delta Sigs are also strong competitors in all campus sports and activities. They take an active part in campus events; in addition, the brothers strive to maintain a good scholastic average. While participating in social events, scholastic achievements, sports and other organizations on campus, the Delta Sigma Phi Frat¬ ernity proposes to give its members an intimate, beneficial fellowship with good men, which is necessary for their full development and a supplement to their cultural and professional education. Its chapter, Gamma Delta, at Ohio North¬ ern was founded in 1920. It is unique on this campus in that it is both a professional and a social fraternity, and only men entering the College of Pharmacy can become brothers. Throughout the year, the Kappa Psi’s participate in sports, reli¬ gious organizations, Campus Chest, Greek Sing, and other activities. As far as the social events are concerned, the fraternity sponsors many, beginning with the Harvest Dance, followed by various house dances, and ending with the Spring Formal held at the scenic Beat- ley’s-on-the-Lake at Russels’ Point. To add to their already great distinction on campus as combining professionalism with social events, Kappa Psi took top prize, a beau¬ tiful gold trophy, for the best float for May Day 1963. Their entry of “Colgate’s Tooth Paste” followed the theme of Advertisements. It can be said that the group together strive for one main goal—that of success. KAPPA PSI Row 1: R. Thomas, R. Ohio Zeta Chapter was established at Ohio Northern University April 29, 1959. The purpose of this fraternity is to provide an atmosphere of Catholic unity, to develop educational, social, and athletic standards, and to encourage an active participation of all the brothers. Phi Kappa Theta works hand in hand with the Newman Club striving to maintain the Catholic standard of morality for all its men. In athletics, the Phi Kaps had a league in all sports. They partici¬ pate in softball, basketball, volleyball, and other sports while manag¬ ing to place first in horseshoes and high in most other sports. Of course they take part in decorations for Homecoming and won the first place trophy with a “Bears Sink Beavers” theme. The biggest special event of the year is the Provincial Ball which is held this year at Case Tech in Cleveland. All eight Phi Kap Chapters in Ohio participate in the square dance, athletic events, and formal dance that highlights the three-day weekend. As for social events, the Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity held an alumni banquet at Homecoming; the Turtle Dance, skating party, pledge dance, Christmas party, and Spring Formal round out their year’s activities. Ground-breaking ceremonies, Fall 1963 The Mu Beta Chapter of Phi Mu Delta was founded on the campus of Ohio Northern University on March 15, 1926. The national frater¬ nity was founded at the University of New Hampshire on March 1, 1918. The goals of the fraternity are to bring men into close bonds of brotherhood and to improve themselves morally, mentally, and spirit¬ ually. The members are very active in Student Council, Board of Gover¬ nors, Homecoming events, and sports. In the intramural and inter- fraternity sports Phi Mu Delta manages to come out high both in baseball and bowling but is also very stiff competition in most of the other sports. Phi Mu Delta’s large membership accounts for its participation in PHI MU DELTA most of the campus activities and for the numerous parties held. House dances, pledge dances, the annual “All Campus Rock,” a children’s Christmas party, and the Monte Carlo Winter Formal are just a few of the many social events sponsored by the chapter. Row 1: P. Nationally it is the third largest social fraternity chapterwise with 147 active chapters. Ohio Alpha has initiated over 870 members since its founding on this campus on February 18, 1905. The Sig Eps occupied what is now the Terrace Building before the present house at 821 South Gilbert was constructed in 1915-1917. It was the first house built as a fraternity house in the state of Ohio. The Sig Ep Chapter is the oldest continually active fraternity on this campus. The Sig Eps are active in all intramural sports, gaining a share of trophies. Also they participate in many of the campus organizations, especially Homecoming, UBOG, May Day, IFC, and Campus Chest. Each year the members compete with the other fraternities for the Blood Mobile Trophy and Scholarship Award and manage to come out on top. Socially speaking, the Sig Eps hold banquets for alumni at Home¬ coming, seniors at graduation, and buffet dinners for freshmen wom¬ en and the three sororities each year at the Chapter house. Some cf the traditional dances are the Winter and Spring formals, the Hawai¬ ian Party, Roman Toga Dance (held by the pledges), as well as numerous other dances and social events such as the Halloween Party, High School Harry Dance, Pirate Dance, and others. All in all, the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity maintains a busy schedule. Seated: S. Hart, Secretary; T. Keiser; Pegis; E. Richards; J. Ciminillo, President; “Mom” Bently, Housemother; M. Paul, V. The beginning of Sigma Pi was on the campus of Vincennes Uni¬ versity in Vincennes, Indiana, on February 26, 1897. It was founded on this campus in 1909 as Phi Chi Psi. On June 1, 1912, Phi Chi Psi was installed as Zeta Chapter of Sigma Pi Fraternity. Sigma Pi strives to make its goals an integral part of every member’s daily life with a special emphasis on scholarship and college participation. Many cf the members of Zeta are found participating in almost any extracur¬ ricular function on campus. In sports the members rank high in the free throw or foul shooting, horseshoes, and other events. They annually sponsor the Male and Female All-Greek Awards and the May Day Bike Race. They are frequently seen at the intercollegiate games helping the cheerleaders yell the Bears on to victory. Also, this last year the Sig Pi’s sponsored the Football Banquet and compiled the Student and Faculty Direc¬ tory for the 1963-64 school year. Names were placed alphabetically in the booklet and then addresses, residence in Ada, year of gradua¬ tion, birth date, and choice of major were all printed and sold by the members cf the fraternity. Many parties are sponsored and planned by Sigma Pi. Teas for the ’freshmen women and sororities are held at the chapter house. Hay rides, Harold’s Club Party, Playboy Club Party, Winter Formal and the Spring Formal represent the main social activities of the Sigma Pi Fraternity. SIGMA PI Row I: J. Shafer, S. Milby, C. Ohio Northern’s student body is largely made up of students who are studying to become pharmacists. The College of Pharmacy here is well known to all figures of the pharmacy world. Among organizations for pharmacy students are the American Pharmaceutical Association, which is open to all pharmics and pre- pharmics; Alpha Zeta Omega, an honorary professional fraternity for Jewish pharmacy students; Kappa Epsilon, an honorary women’s pharmaceutical fraternity; Phi Delta Chi, an honorary men’s organ¬ ization; and the Ampul, sponsored by A. Ph. A., the pharmaceutical publication on campus. These pharmaceutical organizations, for the most part, work for the furthering of the professional status of pharmacists and prospec¬ tive pharmacists within the university. Closely aligned with Northern Players is Theta Alpha Phi, the honorary theatre fraternity. Working in corre¬ lation with the Theatre Department, these two groups do the majority of the work entailed in a theatrical presentation. Northern Players is open to anyone who cares to join; Theta Alpha Phi requires a stipulated number of points which are earned by working crews or acting in the plays. The ONU Debate Team is interested primarily in traveling extensively throughout the State to attend matches. The music department on campus contributes to every student on campus in one way or another. The choir supplies the choral offering for chapel services and sponsors the annual Choral Cabaret. By traveling extensively, this group is one of the most active supplier of worthwhile publicity for the university. The band provides entertainment at half-time of the football games with various shows. Modernette, the dance band, provides dance music for many campus dances, and travels to nearby schools for demonstrations. Participation in the annual Tri-College Concert with Bluffton and Findlay Colleges provides an interesting outlet for members of instrumental organizations. Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma compose the honorary fraternities for band members. M. E. N. C., Music Educators Na¬ tional Conference, is an organization for music majors. The Brass Choir, a newly-organized group, is another outlet for instrumental students. II II, f . i I Row I: B. Kyler, C. Coats, K. Fett, K. Martin, S. Scott, M. Mulder, M. Limes, R. Rogers, L. Several organizations represent a variety of denominations wherever the need is evident. The program of the university does not compete in any way with the local churches, and encouragement is given to members of the various organizations to par¬ ticipate and to identify themselves with the local churches. The Chaplain cf the university is the administrative director of campus religious activities, being assisted by the Religious Council. Participation in chapel services, providing support for orphans overseas, sponsoring programs with speak¬ ers, films, and panel discussions, in general, adding one small sector which will help to fill out the student ' s well-rounded, liberal education are definite attributes of the religious program on campus. PHI KAPPA THETA: BASKETBALL The intramural program, set up by the physical education depart¬ ment under the direction cf Jimmie Stahl provides a needed outlet for those fraternity men and independents who are interested in sports but do not have the time or the ability to participate in the varsity teams. A variety of sports, including wrestling, basketball, softball, tennis, bowling, volleyball, foul shooting, and any others for which there is a demand, is offered each year with intra-fratemity-independent com¬ petition. This year Sigma Pi won the foul shooting, and at press time. Alpha Sigma Phi had won softball and volleyball, the Law Independents had won softball, volleyball, and basketball, and Phi Kappa Theta had won basketball. By providing facilities, referees, and league set-up, the physical education department deserves a great deal of credit for its efforts in this particular area. 247 Mick Wagoner Butch Phillips v r . v fF •leff Slade John Bronson Jerry Johnson HOCKEY Bruce Mays Bart Parent Bob Sterling 249 Wilder — THAN A PORT m « “Assoon as they hit the pass Are you kiddin’ me??
