The officers of the past year included: Guy DeSanctis, President; Russell Gibbons, Vice President; Vincent GilMartin, Secretary; Richard Jenkins, Treasurer. 32 Delta Sigma Phi Delta Sigma Phi, like all other social college fraternities, purposes to give its members that intimate, beneficent fellowship with good men, so necessary to their full development, and to supplement their cultural and professional education with training in those qualifications for citizenship and leadership which are not directly part of the university function. The fraternity’s primary duty is the support of the University in its effort to give the members the education and training they desire for the work which they have chosen. This chapter of Delta Sigma Phi has been, and will be a positive, active support to this University since its establishment at Ohio Northern in 1920. First Row: VV. Schichilone,R. Evans, R. After two days of climbing to the top cf the Empire State Building, sailing around Manhattan, shopping on Fifth Avenue, and visiting stage plays, the choristers reluctantly left New York City, hoping to return again next year. Ten days after they had departed from the metropolis of Ada, the weary bus load wheeled back onto the campus, none the worse for wear. The final concert of the season was the Spring Concert, presented in Lehr Audi¬ torium in May. The over-all record saw the Orange and Black hold a 7 and 2 advantage over the opposition. After dropping the first two games, the men of Clyde Lamb went thru the rest of the campaign in splendid fashion. The highlight of the season was the victory over the Findlay Oilers. Coming from behind, the Polar Bears played heads-up ball to capture the Findlay tilt by a score of 35-14. The crowd that was on hand at Memorial Field spent most of the time on their feet as a stouthearted Northern squad fought to overcome an early lead and go on to win. The Ohio Northern University Football team was bolstered this year with three backfield artists from Massillon High, namely Willie Longshore, Ace Crable, and Paul Francisco. The 1953 season also marked the close of Jack Decker’s brilliant football career for ONU. It was the fourth year for Coach Marv English, and under his tutelage the Polar Bears notched a 15 and 5 record while piling up a grand total of 1,749 points. Fifteen men saw varsity action during the season, and every man contributed to the total points with senior letterman Bob Rupert setting the pace with 539 points. This in itself was a new record for individu¬ al play in the annals of ONU sport history. Among the other members of the varsity squad, the names of Don Kling and Jim Stahl stand out for outstanding rebounding and excellent floor play, respectively. In state ranking, Ohio Northern was fifth, with that same number designating the number of times the Polar Bears cracked the century mark in score. 84 DUTCH KLING TALLIES TWO FOR ONU JIM STAHL REBOUNDS AGAINST CEDARVILLE OHIO NORTHERN ’58-’53 CAGE RECORD ONU 86 Indiana Tech 61 ONU 81 Concordia 65 ONU 88 Cedarville 62 ONU 83 Heidelberg 52 ONU 97 Ashland 67 ONU 118 Giffin 68 ONU 89 Bluffton 53 ONU 57 Tri-State 75 ONU 115 Defiance 90 ONU 76 Indiana Tech ONU 94 Tri-State ONU 79 Otterbein 74 ONU 69 Findlay 72 ONU 74 Bluffton 77 ONU 100 Defiance 85 ONU 89 Ashland 79 ONU 102 Otterbein 104 ONU 68 Findlay 117 ONU 110 Hiram 94 RUPE” GOES UP FOR TWO BOB BROOKHART DRIVING IN FOR NORTHERN 85 JIM STAHL BOB RAEBEL BOB RUPERT DON KLING 86 JACK LENINGER STEVE MICHAELIS BOB BROOKHART JOE HOHMAN 87 BILL HEITZMAN DON PLUMLEY JACK WILLIAMS CHARLIE VIOLET 88 DAVE STALEY BILLY MORGAN RONNY PARSHALL WILLIE LONGSHORE 89 tstf H0IT8OI W1VERSIT7 i «OtTHE« IJf-’-sTtRSITT Kneeling: Gil Franklin, A1 Rubenstein, Norm Kahn. With Leon Golden holding the singles honors, and the combination of Golden and Faut comprising the doubles championship combination, the strong Northern team successfully defended the crown which they won the pre¬ vious year. GOLF In golf, the strong quartet of Dick Zurz, Joe DaPore, Lou Cunzolo, and Martin Lewis, turned in a 7 and 1 record for the season to capture the MOL first place tro¬ phy. Dick Zurz won medalist honors in the league, shooting brilliantly all season. TRACK The up and coming ONU track squad saw more members join its ranks as the activities began on the cinder track at Memorial Field. With R. Mains winning honors in the 440, the squad looked well in competition. JACK DECKER Jack Decker’s play on the gridiron has been nothing less than spectacular since he first donned the Orange and Black of ONU in 1949. A hard charging back with plenty of guts. Jack proved to be the backbone of the Northern squad more than once. A triple threat back in the old sense of the word. Decker not only passed, punted, and carried the ball, but was also a standout on defense. When the Polar Bears were looking for an extra point kicker last year, the chore was awarded to Decker. Although he never did place kicking for extra points before, the talented lad booted 24 out of 33. Jack Decker’s four year record shows a total of 2,668 yards gained rushing in 416 tries. He piled up a total of 228 points, of which 204 were garnered on T.D.’s. In the final analysis, iron man Decker averaged 6.4 yards per try and any way you look a t it, he will be mighty tough to beat. BOB RUPERT To the future cagemen of Ohio Northern Uni¬ versity: set your sights high if you plan to eclipse the marks set by the Spencerville flash. Bob Ru¬ pert. This lad, with his unorthodox foul shoot¬ ing stance, amassed a total of 1,126 points in his 73 games, during his four tenure. He also broke the one-game individual scoring mark with 49 points, and holds the distinction of having made the most foul shots in his senior year-133. Bob has seen a total of 33 hours cf varsity court action on the hardwoods. An all-around athlete, “Rupe” also led the Polar Bears in baseball with a .348 batting aver¬ age. In addition to this. Bob is also very active in fraternity sports. 91 Sealed: J. Stahl, D.Elsass, G. Adams, S. Baughman, M. Acheson, R. Cochiniganio, T. Noblet. Standing: C. Mayers, B. Rupert, B, Shunkwhiler, D. Varsity Baseball THE 1952 DIAMOND ACTION The Northern varsity baseball squad virtually matched run for run against their opposition, but came out on the fat end of the record holding a 5 and 4 advantage. Team Captain T. Noblet and defensive sparkplug Georgie Adams led the RBI column with eight apiece. Dutch Kling sparkled on the mound, and was the most effective pitcher available. The offensive honors came off the bat of Bob Rupert, who hit at a .348 clip, while the defensive honors went to Bob Brookhart with a .965 fielding average. Everyone has been waiting for the law of averages to come into play, but the Sigs busy themselves with the time-honored principle of constant practice. Hats off to the Alpha Sigs for top honors in the fraternity race again in ’53. 98 THE SOCIAL SIDE 99 After a long vacation, students return to the campus of Ohio Northern. 100 HOMECOMING ROYALTY Standing: Mickey Mayer, Phi Chi; Jane Smith, Tau Kappa Kappa; Barbara Ridenour, Independent; Seated: Queen Norene DelBene, Theta Phi Delta. 102 Traditional pushniohilc race—winners. Dance Revue was presented by the Department of Physical Education, under the direction of Mrs. Mozelle Pickering. The Revue featured a program of modern dances. Fraternity and sorority skits were presented, with winning trophies going to Tau Kappa Kappa and Sigma Pi. 105 The May Queen and her court are all members of the Phi Chi Sorority. They are, left to right, Pat Whiteford, Queen Carol Ramsey, Joyce Smith, and Nancy Brown. The Thetas copped a trophy for their “Flag Day ' The King and Queen May Day ' ng float.
