Text from Pages 1 - 192 of the 1952 volume:

1952 um This is the Northern Album, your book of Memories. It carries no elaborate theme and makes no excursions into the lush never-never land too often characteristic of the College annual. It has but one purpose; to help you remember what happened during one year in the life of a great University. Marshall E. Phillips, Editor Robert Evans, Business Manager Vo VL emory Our move J 2 , } ean5 DR. LOUIS E. OTTE, Dean of Men and Dean of the University PROFESSOR ALEXANDER R. WEBB. Dean of the College of Engineering Among the many who have made great contributions to Ohio North¬ ern University these two men occupy a place of highest esteem. Dean Alexander Webb made his contribution over a long period of time; Dean Louis E. Otte over a few short, intensive years. Both in their own unique way have made us their debtors for all time to come. It is fitting, proper and a common privilege that student body, facul¬ ty, and the Board of Trustees should join hands together to do the honor to the memory of these benefactors of Ohio Northern Uni¬ versity. It gives me genuine satisfaction to have a part in such a dedication and I voice for all of you the deep feelings that arise in the breast of every loyal son of Ohio Northern University. Thank God for men like these. F. Bringle McIntosh President 4 DR. LOUIS E. In the two and a half years that Dr. McIntosh has served, much progress has been made at Northern. Many of the buildings have undergone extensive improvement and repair. An addition was built on the pharmacy building, and plans were made to move the engi¬ neering college to the old Ada grade school, which had been pur¬ chased by the university. The women’s dormitory was completed during the summer and now houses all women students, including the sororities, who were moved from their houses. Dr. McIntosh received his B.A. from DePauw University, S.T.B. from Boston University, and holds an honorary D.D. from Depauw University. IMARATHONjj WLWT How good is good enough”? Here in America, we’re a lot less interested in answering that question than we are: “How much better can we do it?” That’s why last year’s track records have a way of falling, this year. That’s why this year’s miracle drugs give way to greater medical miracles, next year. That’s why we come up with television . . . then color television. That’s also why we come up with a good gasoline . . . then a better gasoline. For, under the healthy, competitive system we have in the U.S.A., there is a reward in sports, in science, in business —for those who are not satisfied with “good enough.” As long as every individual and every company is free to seek the reward that comes with “doing it better,” America will continue to be a better and better place in which to live. The drunk thinks that the sign means to ring the bell for the caretaker—to help him out—when ac¬ tually it means to ring the bell if the caretaker is wanted. See? It’s a kind of pun and the drunk has the wrong meaning which is pretty stupid and also too bad as he has gotten the caretaker up out of a sound sleep just to ask him a foolish question about something that nobody knows anything about anyway.
