PRESIDENT ROBERT O. McCLURE Message From Prexy Looking ahead, two things seem perfectly clear—First, there will be a battle of ideologies among the nations of the earth. Second, we, especially you students, cannot escape this struggle. There are those who think they shall find the full life by avoiding hard tasks and responsibilities. Fortunately, since we cannot avoid ob¬ stacles, we find the way to happiness and strength by always doing something we believe is worth doing at the cost cf comfort and convenience. If Abraham Lincoln ' s life had been too sheltered either by Government protection of minimum wages of social security or by great wealth from his parents, he might have missed greatness and immortality. I pray God that your faith in yourselves and your fellowmen may never fail you. Go forward into the future with courage, which is by all odds the great ingredient, and success will be found at the end cf the road. 7

Its spirit has been one of independence, educational adventure and experiment, and high ethical and religious principle. Its Board of Trustees is committed to the spirit and tradition of its past and to steady improvement of facilities and raising of educational standards, and believes that the goals which the present administration of the university has set, and done so much to reach, can and will be attained, and that Northern will fill a permanently important place in the educational field of Ohio and the Midwest. 6
