It is a richly deserved compliment that the students of Ohio Northern pay to Dr. C. H. Freeman in dedicating this issue of the Annual to him. For many years Dr. Freeman has brought to his task a passionate love of the great masters of poetry and prose. He has so studied them as to make them a part of himself. Adding to their timeless utterances his own illuminating inter- pretation, shrewd comment, and profound insight into their meanings, he has made these masters live again for succeeding generations of Northern men and women. As a teacher, Dr. Freeman has few superiors and still fewer peers. His readiness of quotation, the wide range of his memory, the deft touch of his humor make him outstanding in the class room. His influence upon his students is deep and permanent. I am proud, therefore, to have some part in writing this warm word of appre- ciation in honor of a master mind and a choice spirit, and to share in the re- curring experience of the touch of this beloved man upon the generations that have known him. The A Cappella Choir carries the lights and sings for the glory of Ohio Northern in such cities as New York, Chicago, Cleveland, Cincinnati, and many smaller cities and towns en route. There are also engagements in Lima, Dayton, Spring- field, and other small cities and towns only short distances from the University. The choir, organized by group election and directed by Mr. Owens, is this year the largest it has ever been. The members look forward with great anticipation to the trips each year and, having seen the sights and sung their best, return with a new zest to their studies. In addition to the performance of the choir, the chorus presents the annual rendition of the Messiah. This year's chorus was the largest of any that has given the Messiah within the past several years. Besides the Messiah at Christmas time there is also the annual presentation of Stabat Mater for the Easter Festival and a Spring Festival in May. Looking forward to and planning for the spring concert and the usual broadcast from WLOK, Lima, each a part ot music week, the orchestra does not, however, limit its appear- ances. More subdued but nevertheless important lights of the year are the ap- pearances in Chapel, once each quarter, and the accompaniments for the Mes- siah and the spring festival. HBE BHUUP? ln order to keep the light of democratic fellowship burning brightly on the campus, certain groups have been organ- ized to assist in maintaining order and cooperation among students, as well as to offer recreational and social oppor- tunities for all students. These groups include the AWS, WAA, YMCA, YWCA, Omega Phi Kappa, and the En- gineer's Executive Council. The Pan Hellenic and Interfra- ternity Council are also a service to our University. The Association of Women Students is composed of all the Women on the campus. Each Woman automatically becomes a member upon entering the university. It spon- sors the Feminine Forum programs and conducts the Freshman. Hell Week. ln the fall, a pot luck supper was given with the installation oi officers. Many leadership dinners were given and this year it helped sponsor a Red Cross benefit dance. The association has four governing boards: executive, legislative, house council and Freshman advisory. The legislative board plans and regulates the women's activities. It is made up of the AWS officers, the presidents of WAA, YWCA, and Pan Hellenic council. The executive board consists of the officers. This year the office of second vice president was added. The legislative board also acts as a student government in solving disciplinary problems. The AWS sponsors an annual formal dance, which is usually held at Christmas. HOUSE COUIICIL nnu FRESHITIHII HDUISERS The House Council is composed of the presidents elected by the various houses. They meet to discuss the perplexing problems of their groups. The council exists primarily for the correlation and the cooperation of the various houses. Several leadership dinners are held by this group during the year. The freshman advisory board members are upper classmen selected by the Dean of Women to act in an advisory capacity to the incoming freshmen. They attend the house meetings, help organize the houses, and discuss individual problems with the girls in order to help personal adjustment. I. Porter, B. Harris, L. Perry, M. Mertz, M. Parker, K. The group holds weekly dinner meetings at which pre- pared and extemporaneous speeches are presented and criticized. Tem- porary toastmasters are appointed each Week. Because of the many ap- plicants, the club is forced to restrict membership to fifteen upperclass en- gineers. The Ohio Northern branch of the American Society of Mechanical En- gineers offers a means by which students of this department may shine in other Ways than in their ac- tual professional Work. At their bi- Weekly meetings student and guest speakers present papers and lec- tures. Prizes are given yearly to the best student speakers and one of these presents his paper at the Alle- gheny Hegional conference. All mechanical engineers belong to the organization. IISCE For the purpose of casting light on the activities of the civil engineering pro- fession, the Ohio Northern Student Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers convenes bi-monthly to discuss matters of group interest. Frequently guest speakers address the society. Students enrolled in the department of civil engineering are eligible for membership. Inspection trips are made to neighboring cities, and members attend conferences of professional engineers. Truly concerned With lighting the World, the local chapter of the Ameri- can Institute of Electrical Engineers meets semi-monthly to consider prob- lems of their profession. It is written, edited, and publish- ed by those students interested in journalism. Meetings are held in The Review offices on the second floor of the Lehr building. Besides the actual news printed, the Review offers oppor- tunity for students of writing ability to see their work in print in the form of features, columns, poetry, and letters to the editor. There is a demand for students interested in the business side of publication, in the line of ad- vertising and business management. One of its tasks this year was the se- lection of the Homecoming Queen by means of ballots printed on the front page. ln addition to the campus circu- lation, papers are sent in exchange for publication of other colleges, and copies are sent to absent students in the army camps and other service divisions. With few exceptions, photographs were furnished by students, assisted by Professor Clyde Lamb. The theme Northern Lights is symbolic of the brilliant activities and high lights of a year at the university. Work is be- gun at the beginning of the year to or- ganize the book and assign the var- ious tasks to members of the editorial and business staffs. The bulk of the copy is collected during the winter quarter, with photography chiefly carried on in the Fall and early Win- ter. Because of a shortened school year, publication date was advanced several weeks. This necessitated an early deadline for copy, and for this reason certain omissions have been made from group activities, following that date. Without the cooperation of the many organizations and groups on the campus, as well as that of individuals, this book could never have been completed in such record time. An attempt has been made to include every individual on the carn- pus in this yearly record of events. In this time, a record of 50 Wins, 23 losses and 12 ties has been compiled on the gridiron, While 90 victories and 70 defeats represent his efforts on the hardwood. A graduate of Coe College and Columbia University, Harris has been highly instrumental in the develop- ment of the schoo1's athletic program. MANAGERS The unsung heroes of football are the managers. In this phase of the game, Ed Treherne was the head man, ably assisted by Dick Blesh, Paul Wallace, Armand Ensign and Ed Rozak. Their duties were to keep the balls clean and properly inflated with air, the uniforms and football togs in shape, besides finding time to be the Coaches' handymen. ASSISTANT CQACH After fullbacking for two years, Tom Pierson started the season as fresh- man mentor due to a trick knee which forced him out of regular action. Mid- way in the campaign, the M. D.'s changed their minds as to the seri- ousness of the knee, allowing Tom to finish the schedule by playing a bang-up game at center. ..n. -1' -Z Top: Thomas, Shaffer, Widner, Shoemaker Semple, Mallone, Wanchic, Allshouse, Ed wards, Stombaugh. F00 Bill Ohio Northern's Polar Bears turned in their best football record since '38 by winning six games, losing one and tie- ing one. A third of the mythical Ohio Conference cham- pionship was snared by tieing with Case and Bowling Green. Throughout the season, a potent offense and a Well-knit defense highlighted the Bears' showing. There were many Northern lights this campaign. Show- ing the brightest were Hugh Semple and Sid Marcus, who were placed on the Associated Press All-Conference first team. Other stars chosen were Iannotti, second team guard, Lauless, fullback, and Mallone, end, third team, Ken Shoe- maker, end, and Norman Bray, halfback, honorable men- tion. Prospects are bright that again next season the Northern light will shine over the conference horizon. Angelo Iannotti, guard KLJ Evan Anderson, half Collins Stackhouse, half KLJ FINDLAY The Bears opened the season by hanging a 7-U decision on the neck of their old rival in Findlay. The score Was not indica- tive ofthe Lambrne-n's pow- er as they outrushed the Orange 239 yards to 77. Bray punched over the score on a reverse in the second period. Ken Shoemaker, end CLD Tackle 'im low, bub, tackle 'irn low. ST. LAWRENCE The only defeat ot the season came at the hands of the Larries in Canton, N. Y. to the tune of 13-U. A gent by the name of lim Heiti was the thorn in the Bears' side as he slashed his Way for gains all after- noon. Ken Crawford, tackle CLD Sid Marcus, guard KU Marvin Skolnik, guard ILP 94 I Ken Basinger, quarter QLD Bruno Mallone, end ILP Warren Widner, end ALBION The rugged Bruins in- vaded the state of Michi- gan to emerge victorious by a score of 25-6 over a fast Albion eleven that hadn't met defeat on their field since 1938. Basinger's passing with Mallone and Bray on the receiving end highlighted the Bears' of- lense. That's the way to buck that line. Nick Vlfanchic, full-end KL! CAPITAL The Orange and Black punched out an easy Win over the Purple of Capital by the margin of 27-6 for their third triumph of the campaign. The halftime score Was cr 6-6 deadlock, but the Bears pushed over three touchdowns in the second half while holding the Lutherans in check. Phil Fox, guard CLD Lowell Shaffer, halt KLJ Dick Allshouse, tackle 95 Iunior Bray, half KL? Bob Stombaugh, full Nelson Lauless, full CLD DENISON Before a homecoming crowd at Tait Field esti- mated to be around 2,5UO, the Northern stalwarts bat- tled the Big Red of Denison to cr 7-7 draw. The Bears Were behind at the halt but came on with cr rush and scored the tieing markers in the fourth quarter on Lauless's plunge and Stackhouses conversion. Get that block. MUSKINGUM A mud and rain-soaked home field was no hindrance as the Bruins pounded out a 20-O deci- sion over Muskingum to remain undefeated in the conference race. So com- pletely was the Musky at- tack bottled that they never advanced the ball beyond the Northern 40-yard line. Bob Edwards, center CLD Kent Cottermcrn, halt Mike Lecholop, center KLJ 96 Hugh Semple, tackle CLD Sid Clark, end Ice Thomas, tackle KLJ MT. UNION Ohio Northern had to take to the air to defeat an aggressive Mt. Union team by the score of 14-O. The Purple Raiders employed a 7-man line against the Bears who scored in the second quarter on passes from Heck to Bray and Shoemaker. Stackhouse converted his ninth and tenth extra points of the season. The line-up. HEIDELBERG The Polar Bears ended a highly successful cam- paign by taking a 10-8 ver- dict at Heidelberg. A field goal by Stack proved to be the deciding margin by which the Bears claimed the game and a share of the Ohio conference cham- pionship. Chuck Heck, half ILJ Tom Pierson, center CLD Iohn McCutcheon, tackle 97 BHSHETBHLL Spectacular, thrilling, nerve racking-these adjectives de- scribe a typical basketball game. Finishing sixth in the state and conference standings, the Bears piled up 965 points for a 60.3 game average, second high in the midwest. Highlighting the season's play were the battles with Cap- ital and the 82 point onslaught against Ashland which now stands as the Taft gym scoring record. Opening its season at Bowling Green in the Northwest Meet, the squad tied with Bowling Green for second place with 38V2 points. Oberlin rolled up 85 points, while Findlay, Toledo and Bluffton trailed behind. During the second week of the season Northern won 70-Bl at Otterbein, and then triumphed 72-59 at Capital three days later. ln a triangular meet at home, Findlay Won with 74-U3 points, followed closely by Northern with 72, while Bluffton made 14-2!3. Also at home, the Bears Won a second three- way meet with this score: Northern 83, Witten- berg 52, Bluffton 26. The Orange and Black made 10 points in the Ohio Conference meet at Wooster. Captain Ioe Banks was an in- spirational leader to the cinder men through- out the season, UHRSITV IIIEII As on other campuses, athletic prowess is honored with awards at Northern. The win- ners of varsity letters automatically become members of the N Association. At present the N is given in football, basketball, track and tennis. A black sweater with an orange N is awarded to the athlete after his first season, and another N is given with each additional season. The style of the N identifies the athlete's field of activity. At present, freshman teams do not have any regular competition with out- side organizations. ln return for their unglori- fied efforts, yearling football, basketball and track men receive a black sweater with orange numerals indicating the year of graduation. FRESHIIIHII FO0TBIIll FRESHIIIFIII A smaller group of freshmen than usual turned out for football, but the loyal nucleus of the squad gave the varsity good enough competition to keep it at top form for each game in its highly successful season. A suffi- cient number of the freshmen showed promise that most of the holes created in the varsity of last fall should be filled capably when next season rolls around. HSHETBHLL Following the general trend of most of the Polar Bear athletic squads at present, this year's freshman basketball crew was com- posed of a rather small group of shooting stars. A new ruling limited the extent of the squad's competition, so it was only from the scrimmages with the varsity that we could guess which of the newcomers would be able to add new flashes to next year's Northern lights. Moreover, Dr. I-larrod was a student and scholar zealous for the ever-soaring integrity and accompanying success of Noriherrfs Chemistry department, his department. To no lesser degree this man touched life in its depth oi beauty and usefulness. For greater understanding ot his philosophy one can only cite his favorite, Crossing The Bar. EITIERITUS Professor Iames A. Whitted, head oi the department of mathematics at Ohio Northern University since 1923, retired at the end oi the winter quarter after forty-tive years devoted to the teaching profession. Known throughout the country as a mathematician, he was better known on the campus for his kindiiness and dependability. We wish him good will and happiness in his new lite in retirement. 0. ll. U.
