Such thoughts as these came to me a year ago when the students of the O. M. I. were guests at a dinner which I at- tended given by the Laundryowners and Allied Trades of Cincinnati. At the time as I studied the faces of the group, I could not but be impressed with the serious purpose, which seemingly without exception characterized the entire student body. There was a confident eagerness that was unmistak- able, and contrasted with a similar group from the average college, there was a realization of the serious attitude and e conviction that they realized the opportunities that were theirs. The deduction was unmistakable that from this foun- tain of education there must inevitably flow a stream of life giving quality that must leave its impress deep in our in- dustry, and never has there been greater need for well trained men. One of the country's big executives said recently- For every efficient man or woman there are ninety- nine ineffici- ents, stenographers who listen with one ear only, secretaries who can't remember, clerks who keep their eye on the clock, department heads who are afraid to make decisions of their own, superintendents utterly lacking in initiative and origin- ality, not one in a hundred has any interest in his work, beyond doing as little as he can for the money that he gets. Carelessness, laziness and indifference instead of in- telligence, enthusiasm, driving purpose and quick thinking. A willingness to stay put instead of the eager ambition that fairly begs for new opportunities and larger responsibilities. The trouble with so many is that they express themselves in day dreams, and not in action. The trouble is also with their lack of training. They are unable to even recognize oppor- tunities. The thing that wins today is the amount of eificient brain power you can call into instant action. Such a brain judges with wisdom and decides with promptness and ac- curacyg yet it remains elastic and impressionable, never be- coming incapable of adopting itself to new ldeas and to new circumstances. Such a brain concentrates completely upon any subject. It sifts, selects and arrays facts, ideas and ob- servations, from which it envelopes that desirable thing we call Experience. Never in the history of American business were such chances open to intelligent ambition. Opportunities that occur and are constantly recurring for such as these. It was the old belief that Opportunity knocks once and having knocked re- turns no more. Opportunity is not content and never has been with a single summons. It is not even true that she comes - - - -- . . . .
