LUCY GLENN N engineer who is inarticulate, said a well- known New York engineer in speaking of the value to members of his profession of a thorough knowledge of English, is quite as use- less as one who is professionally incompetent. The mechanic, the business man, and the artist are not hermits shut off from all intercourse with others. They must be able to communicate both in speaking and in writing with the outside world. For this reason, it is necessary that students learn to express themselves coherently and forcefully while they are in school. If the student learns to be at ease on his feet in speaking to his classmates, he will later be at ease in speaking to business men. If he learns to write clearly and correctly in class, he will later use this ability in writing a fine type of business letter. However, a study of English is not going far enough if it merely teaches a student the sin of ain't and this here. Beyond this, one should learn to love some books as a friend, to come to them for joy, laughter, peace, and a catch in the throat.
