ARLYLE said of man: Nevertheless he can use tools, can devise toolsg With these the great granite mountain nillts into dust before him. He kneads glowing iron as if it were soft paste. Seas are his smooth highways, Winds and fire his unwearying steeds. Nowhere do we find him without toolsg Without tools he is nothingg With tools he is all. Few of us realize the important parts that tools, machinery, and the skilled mechanic play in our daily life. It is by the skillful use of intricate machinery that we are able to produce articles in large quantities and at lower prices. Articles costing a few cents would cost many dollars if made one at a time by hand.. It is well for everyone to have some knowledge of machinery and the uses of tools, for it brings one to a deeper appreciation of the many things we use and enjoy in our walk through life. frrfffffcfcw CARROLL JOHN GROOM Director of Metal Shops J'-'ff 'i?-T'-'Fa e32I's'f5Qe?'f?C?143m::f4 'ifisigffrfi-f1'ff r1f'f1e 1-rff: fp21f f'l'?'f'nfg1m.-w:-mm 1 ff Tx Paire Thirty-nine

It developes skill of the hand and makes it more responsive to the mindg it puts a boy in a position to be able to make useful articles for the home and to repair broken furniture. In handling woods he becomes ac- quainted with the different kinds, their qualities and adaptability for different conditions. He learns methods of construction, enabling him to decide between a well-constructed piece of furni- ture and a cheaply constructed one. By being familiar with the grain and fiber of lumber he can distinguish between the real species and a cheaper wood stained to imitate it. Wy!
