FRANCISCO PENA :ru HE spanish language is a development of the Latin as it was spoken in the Iberian Penin- sula. We speak of Spanish as a separate lan- guage since the twelfth century. Today this language is spoken not only in Spain, but also in the greater part of South America, Mexico, the West Indies, the Antilles, and even in some places on the coast of Africa. When the Jews were driven from Spain, they carried the Spanish language with them into Turkey and other coun- tries. At present Spanish is spoken by about sixty millions of people of whom only twenty millions live in Spain itself It has often been said that its language is the mirror of a nations charact r However much one may read about the life the customs, or the peculiarities of a foreign nation one cannot arrive at a complete understanding of national character without a knowledge of the peoples language Those who usit the Spanish speaking countries and know only enough Spanish to say a few ordinary phrases are like a person of whom the Bible says Inyes have they and see not These can see only the surface, the outward phenomena, but they lack the ability of inter preting correctly what they see Head of Department of Spanish i , S , Q 9. Everyone has two countries, his own and France! This little saying rings true because everyone does, I believe, reserve a little corner in his heart for France. Her histo1'y, literature and art-everything about her is per- meated with a certain joie de Vivre which is appealing. Her very language has that rhythmic sway which is so characteristic of the French people. But aside from this natural appeal, the study of any foreign language has an lntrinsic value in itself It not only tests your knowledge of your native tongue but analyses it in a way never to be forgotten To study a foreign tongue 1 indeed to become ploficlent in your own idiom If is but another link, and a very interesting one in the chaln of curriculum which alms for corre lated mental activity area .,zS9Zwz.,'725La,.,e Head of Department of French A fm 'mrmrmm rg IQ rm rmllxmulm7mrm1lr7m7m7nv4 :Aim ll IA mxfgn-Afmtfnonifgng .A A IQ in -A A A-in A A A mum pl . , 1: . . . .
