FRANCISCO PENA :ru HE spanish language is a development of the Latin as it was spoken in the Iberian Penin- sula. We speak of Spanish as a separate lan- guage since the twelfth century. Today this language is spoken not only in Spain, but also in the greater part of South America, Mexico, the West Indies, the Antilles, and even in some places on the coast of Africa. When the Jews were driven from Spain, they carried the Spanish language with them into Turkey and other coun- tries.
